inspire a noble enthusiasm, it is t ie fact that we are put in trust with tho :uIturo, guidance nnd direction of thirty or forty human souls, with powers of reason, judgment, emotion, memory and action. Here is something to do which will tux your noblest energies. Prepare hr this work. Excel in elementa y knowledge. Form habits cf observation and study. Prepare an outline of study and be systematic ai;tl diligent in tilling it np. Waste no time, and expend no energy upon the frivolous and perverted literature, so common in our day. Choo?e the best authors iu science, history, biography and general literature .'or your perusa". Live in them. Imbibe their spirit. The State furnish is yon such works in your disirht libraries. If you cannot find time to peruse them, make time by a wiser system of arrangmcnt. III. In the government and discipline of the school much depends upon your discretion, gentienesi, decision, regularity and order: This is your throue of power. Let it be power animated by lov ?, gu ded by intelligence. Be earnest, diligent, hopeful. Govern yourselves, if you would weil govern others. Indulge in no feelings inimical to the high ends of what Ave properly call education. Seek all possible aid. Keep some chosen educational work constantly beibre von as a manual. Whan that Is well read, and inwardly digested, get another. The "Indiana School Journal and Teacher, the Organ of the State Teachers Associate n and of the Superintendent of Pubi c Instruction' for your own sak?, and for your work's sake, ought 10 be diligently studied. Attend cvei y Institute that yon can. The cost is partly sustained by the State, ar d will be more than repaid by the increased wages that such applicants may demand and will secure. Our trustees are judicious men, and oil other things being equal, will prefer such teachers, and encourage them by higher remuneration. IV. And finally remember that you are not pricatcjbut publie men ai d women. You are the servants of the State. It has entrusted its noblest work to you. Whether so considered generally or not, the proper training an I culture of is youth is the rubiest work of the State. The ancient moralist, Seneca says "it is not exclusively the man that leads armies to victory, or the statesman that gives his opinions on peace, or war, that serves his country; but the one who exhorts youth, who furnishes their minds wi:h virtuous principles, who transacts pub ic business in private." You are honored with this important tru t. Do not impair this work by fallbg below its dignity. Be patriots, and make your schools fountains of patriotic influence. Do not exclu ie the moral element, but infuse it largely in your work. Form some muthod, and take some time to train habitually those conmitted to you, in the solution of moral questions. ' If children have consciences, "ihen their consciences and moral natures ought to be enlightened and cultivated as well as their minds. The State Superintendent of Pub' ie Instruction, as the agent of trie State authorities, recommends, that the sacred scriptureis be us ad in our public schools as an important help in this moral instruction. It will be found by experience that this will prove the best means of discipline and good government. The State, though it properly intt rdicts sectarian teaching, "trusts to your prudence, and patriotism to inculcate those cardinal arid catho' ic principles which teach obedience to God and duty to man." These few counsels, well digested, and faithfully carried out, will rna jc you sjuch in character and influence, and your schools such fountains of light, that it may be truly said, as an indication of blessed promise "the sehool-niaster is abroad in tbe land."
