"irestenlay, as onr newly-appointed Register of the land office here, Mr. Maxwell, Col. of the First Mieiiip-an Cavalry during the war, was busily engaged in his office, a tall, military-looking gentleman walked in, who he instantly rcco"--nized as Mr. Henry E. Leej nephew of (ten. Ilobert E. 'Lee, and Colonel of the First Virginia Cavalry -during the rebellion. The recognition was mutuai, and palled up bitter and painful reminiscences of events that occurred during the terrible conflict between the armies of the North and Southern Confederacy. It appears thnt during the rebellion the First Virginia and First Michigan Cavalry happened to be arrayed against the other, and the feeling of animosity between the two regiments was as bitter as thnt entertained toward each other by two single persons wdio are deadly enemies. At the famots battle of Gettysburg the two regit) icnts fought face to face, each learning to respect the other for blows given and the courage displayed. Between Colonels Maxwell and Lee the loaders of the two regiments, the hate entertained by the respective members of each regiment seemed to concentrate, and when the contending armies were engaged on James river, the two Colonels
Among the most painful ills that "flesh is heir to," is tooth-ache, and for the relief of this, when arising from decayed molars aud incisors, we have tin: authority of one of the tooth-wise chaps for prescribing gum copal dissolved in chloroform, aa the best remedy known. The application is simple and easy. Clean out the hole, and moisten a little piece of cotton with the solution ; introduce this into the decayed part, and in every instance the relief has been almost instaneous, the chloroform removes the pain, and the -gum copal resists the action of the saliva ; and as the application is so agreeable, those wdio labor under tho dreadful

A revival of the pediculous horor in connection with false hair is not improbable. It is gravely stated in au English journal that much of the hair in use for Chignons, curls, switched, &c, is purchased in Syria and other Oriental countries, some of it being actually procured from the lazar houses where lepers are confined. In addition to the pedieiili with which this hair abounds, sometimes, through insufficient purification in the preparation for market, it eontains the germs of infeetious diseases. A comet is said to be approaching the earth, and it is also stated it will approach nearer than any comet has for a number of years. It can be seen only in the small hours of the morning. We find the following in

Cinders in the Eye. The following is from a communication in the ' Hearth and Home by an eminent physician ; "Called to prescribe! for Mrs. Andrews' inflamed eye ; learned that she had a bit of cinder in her eye ; occurred while traveling on tho ears four days ago ; eye very much inflamed, painful, and attended with severe headache. This is one of hundreds of cases where a little knowledge would not have been a dangerous thing, and wonld save a world of pain. Nothing is -uiore distressing to a traveler than a piece of cinder in the eye, and nodisorder is more easily remedied. Calling the family together, I proceeded to show them that it was not an eye-wash that Mrs. Andrews needed to relieve her sufferings, but the removal of the foreign substance. The cinder will be found just, underneath the margin -of the lid, wnere there is a small groove or gutter for the flow of tears to the inner angles
ol the eye. ioreign bodies tend to fall into this groove, and if they are angular, like cinder, they adhere, in buue -oTure current ot tears " which now flow in great abundance, and sooner or later carry off smooth substances. Now, if yoa raise the . margin of the upper lid a id turn it over, the cinder or grai i of sand will be exposed, and may be easily removed with the point "of a pencil, or with the finger covered with a handkerchief. I then demonstrated this simple operation on one of the bays thus : Taking a pencil in my right fingers, with the tbomb and first finger of my left hand I seized the eye-lashes of the upper lid, and drawing the .lid gently out from the ball, pressed the point of the pencil downward upon the upper snraeeof the lid. about one-fourth of an inch
