Perilous Situation. On the 22d ult., at Ellettsville, as the freight train of Mr. Charles Lansford, a conductor on the Louisville, Kew Albany and Chicago Railway", was about moving oS a switch into the main track, Mr. L. took his station on a platform ear of the train, in order to signal the engineer how to move. His back was to the rear end of the train, and as the cars began to move, Mr. Lans'ford stepped slowly backward, and without noticing that he was near the end of the car. Suddenly he took the '"'one step too many," and was precipitated backwards to the track, betw!en two cars. The trair. was in motion, and his fall was not observed. Fortunately he had the presence of mind to draw himself straight out ia the centre of the track, and lie as close aa possible to the ground, and while in this perilous po3ition,eight heavy freight cars passed over him. The brake of on3 of the ears just touched Mr. Lansford on the ear, and this is about all the injury he received. He state;, however, that his suspense was terrible, as he momentarily expected to be struck by one of the crakes, dragged from the place where he lay, and crushed to death. His agony of mind during this time can be imagined, but he says words fail to express it. When he fell, one of his shoulders was slightly bruised by striking against the car.

A writer contributes the following to a recent number of Once a Week. I went into a shop the other day, to buy what the drapers call "gents'

As I am not a burlesque writer, it was clear that I could not lay my boos on the counter and say "with all my sole nor could I paraphrase Dibdin's Jack Tar, when he spoke of the dancer who "so daintily handled her feet." The little woman, however, speedily removed my first perplexity, though only to plunge me into another. "Will you," said she, "please to double up your fist and lay it on the counter I replied that I did not want; gloves, but socks. "And I want to take your measure," she said, "But " I urged, it is the measure of my foot that you require." "Yes," she replied, "and I can get it equally as well from vour hand. Once around
had been somewhat astonished at your clenched fist, at the knuckles,
is the length ot your loot. And she took the measure of my fist, and I took the socks on the fa-it h of the damsel's representation ; and in due course, I found that she was quite right, and had fitted me to a nicety.
