Robinson Crusoe's lsliiud Colonized. The Gartcnlaxibe, a widely circu lated German illustrated paper, published in Leipzic, has this hit of information, which is of interest the world over : At a distance less th:uv three day's voyage from Valparaiso, ii Chili, and nearly in the same latitude with this important port on the "Western coast of South America, i ; the Inland of Juaa Fernandez, where once upon a time, Alexander Selkirk, during a solitary banish ment of four years, gathered tho material tor Defoe's" Robinson Cru

Andy Johnson says, President Grant is "a mere incident of the war." Well, that is iirmitely better than the mere accident of an assassination. Sixty-five per cent of the male population of Spain, and eight-six per cent, of its female population, are unable to read or write. Only about one in every thirteen goes tosehool. This does not speak well for the prospect of eatablLihing a republic iu tl at country. The 'post oifice officials in Cleve

land, had a lively time a day or two ago, handling the "mail matter."

In one or the pouches were two hoxes of bees, on their wav to

Clarice county. The boxes vee about two inches square, and half an inch deep. These boxes had

breathing ho'es in top and side, covered by a very fine wire gauze. There wen?, perhaps, a dozen bees

in each box, and each box provided with a small stick of candy for lunch on the way.

Mr. James Broils, a farmer living near Louisville, is in something ot' a stew about his bees, of which he had forty-five hives. The emblem of industry lit out one niglit, without a note of warning, and neither hair nor hide of them has leen eeeru since. On inquiry, Mr. B. learned that all the bees in the reighbor-

hood left the same night, mid in the

same unaccountable manner. The

hives, on being examiivd, were found full of honey, and nothing

unusual was discovered to warrant

the insects ir. bolting.

The Spanish authorities in Cuba deserve general execration for their treatment of insurgents who fall into their hand.. At Barracoa, lately, they deliberately shot sixty prisoners whom they had captured, and

whose live, under all the rules of

civilized warfare, they were bound to preserve. This is but a sample of numerous atrocities which have been reported.

Church Singing. A cor

respondent ot the Syracuse Joxtrncil writes : A line of a hymn given out at prayer meeting so excited the curiosity of my little girl that on returning home she repeated it, with a request for an explanation. The

line, as she heard it, was, "Mitre Rime a bird and long has been." At the cost of much time devoted to researches in an old hymn book, and the exercise of a patient ingenuity, the satisfactory discoveiy

was made ot the original ot the above translation, towit: "My

crimes a burden long have been."
