Up went t'ije heels of the con-, down went her head, over vt it Bridget and a half dozen of the "childers,' aiul away dashed the infuriated bovine down the street, the terror of all the mothers and t le delight of ajl die dogs. Poor Paddy stood for a nionent breathless with astonishment, then, clapping his hand upon his hips, locked .sorrowfully, ami exclaimed : "Bejabers, Bridget, but isn't the Protestant strong in her the bast !" m- tm Mosquitoes. The mysteries of the I t to : nl death of mosquitoes, seems ncvevto have been studiod with suifiei-nt care, and a brief consideration of the subject will present somo shrtlingquestions. IIov many millions of them are developed numu ly is not known, but it is known that they belong to the tribe of '.K odsuekers, and draw their rations f om arimals and bipeds under protest. X;w a man must live, and so must a mosquito. 'He latter finds himself projected into the world nclcws roh'ivi, as it were, left an orphan at an early age, dependent upon blood for his subtstcne?, and pursuing the first great law of luuure,

he approaches and attacks mankind, impelled by the same instinct that feads men to approach and attack j their diurnal hash. Perhaps the : mosquito perched upon your ntse is j breaking his fast for the first time i in his life. Vould you cut l.im off in the bloom of his youth, simply because his gentle puncture cmses j

pain : v ouia you taice advantage of your size and inflict bodily injury upon an inoffensive member of society ? In ph.in language, has a mosquito no rights which you are bound to respect The mosquito drags out 'us miserable existence in the miAst of a perpetual famine, and invarably dies of starvation the insignificant number killed "by hand," bein: too small to deserve mention. The writer fought nobly, the ot.'ier day, and killed but two outright, though a third showed signs of pumsrment and perhaps perished of his wounds. Strict humanitarians however, could not find it in their hearts to kill these merry little songsters.

Calisaya or King's Eark was unknown until the middle of the 17th century. Hjinboidt make: favorable mention of its febrifuge qualities as an antidote to Fever and gae, Intermittent and Malarious Fevers, in his extensive South American :ravels. In 1640 it was used by t ie Jesuits, who alone at that time possessed the secret of its wonderful tcnic properties, and it was sold by them for its own weight in silver. In 1658. eighteen years after, Sir John Talbot employed it with, great success in France in the treatment of Fever and Ague, Dyspepsia, Nervous Affections, Loss cf ppc'.ite, Weakness and Debility, Palpitation of the Heart, Diarrhoea, c;r.. In 1679 he soid the secret of its origin to Louis XIV, by whom it wo 3 divu ged. It is now the all important ingredient in Drake's PLANTATION BITTERS, and preserved as it is in pure 3t. The Bark is gathered and cured under the immediate supervision of an agent sent out to Brazil, expressly for :hat purpose, and aside from a few thousand pound;; wh'ch are sole, to the manufacturers of Quin ne, is all used in ;he preparing of the;e Bitters, to which they are indebted for their wonderful success as a tonic. jjThe abeve cut represents the natives in their ovn native forest gather rg the Bark,
