A secret society has been formed, having branches in the pri: cip:l cities of the Union, for carrying the country over lo Imperialism. Its. members, aearly all of whom originally belonged to the Knights of the Golden Ci role, and are disappointed Democratic politicians, are sworn to promote a:id support what is termed a "Free Empire." It is proposed to establish an aristocracy, with executive powers in the hand.- of a council, with one man at the head, wiio shall hold the position iu- life, and be designated" Consul of the Free- Empire of the United States, the title of Consul to be thrown away for chat of Emperor as soon

If enterprise carries its aspiring sons to Australia, California, and the uttermost parts of the earth to unearth the rich deposits of nature, wc may be certain that the mineral fields of Monroe and Greene oor.uties,on the very highways of activity and within easy access to the march of emigration, will net long go unexplored alter their exhaust less resources become known. In truth, Eastern enterprise has already cast its peering eyes on these treasures, anei its agents have been busy for years exploring and studying the geology :f these wealth-bearing fields, The development of this coveted wealth is the first desideratum, and railroads will be the means of tripling the wealth and population of these counties in a very few years. "It is the first step that costs." It is vain to establish mining interests without an outlet for their products, and the development of our mineral wealth will begin with the laying of the track, and be stimulated by every mile of its progress.

Yes, Indiana is doing very well, and the credit is due to the licpubliean party, by which the policy of honesty has been carried out at the expense of obloquy, resistance, and dei.uiiciation unequr.Ued in the history of the State. From the first set.lemcni with our creditors in 1S-10, to 1860, the Democrats hod the absolute control of the State, and paid not a dollar of the debr.
If "hey had kept the power till this day, there is no reasonable probability that they would have paid any more. And, instead of helping the Republicans to pay, they used evy opportunity to defeat or thwart payments. When the appreciations i' iled in 1863, they used every effort to prevent the payment of interest on the debt, although the faith of the State was "solemnly pledged" to pay that interest semi-annually, at a fixed place and fixed times. They contended that a fresh law was needed, every time, to give force to a "solemn" pledge, and their State officers refused to give out a dollar, or pay it to the creditors. But for Governor Morton's d termination to preserve the State's credit at all hazards, and his extra-legal, but me re than justifiable, act of horrow-

The reptile mads its escape so quickly that she was unable to tell what kind of a snake it; was. public, and the cities, counties, towns-, and the people, along the lines of the roads, are often greatly enriched by them, and derive advantages from thctn almost incalculable. Besides, it has often happened that the subscribers for stock, having paid in the amount of their subscriptions, have entirely lost it, on account of the failure of the com
pany to construct the road. Hence, a new mode of raising capital for the construction of railroads, has recently been adopted at the West. It is as follows: First, a company is organized under the general railroad laws of the State, for the purpose of const -uctiug a railroad between two given points, with a capital sufficient to acquire the right of way, grade the road, build he necessary bridges, and put on the superstructure, ready for the iron. Then, cities, towns, counties, and inhabitant, near the termini, or along the line of the road, whose interests will be greatly increased in value, by its censtruetion, agree to contribute to the company, ;n the form of donations, an amount sufficient to construct the road and prepare it for tl e rails, payable when the road is completed, either in whole, or bv
sections, when the cars are running. This being done, Eastern capitalist subscribe for the stoedc and advance whatever money U required to fit the road for the iron, to be refunded, in whole or in part, from the donations, as they are paid in.
In this way, the donors insure the completion of rhe road, while strong inducements are held out to capitalists to invest funds in the stock. When the road is ready for them, the company purchase the iron and equipments, with funds, which at that stage of the work it finds butlittle difficulty in obtaining. Thus, the donors are sure to realize the benefits of the road, the capitalists
make a prontaole investment, and
c interests are subserved.

In Indiana, tins is trie plan gen
erally adopted. Gen. Iurnsidi, f r irstanc, is building a road on this plan from Indianapolis to Vineennes, and thence to Cairo, and the M-ork is far advancing. Wc understand that no Kastern men, Francis IVlloves, Ksq., our fe.low citizen, ami John J. Merritt, of New York, are abotit to organize a company for the purpose of constructing a railroad from Evansvillo, on the Ohio river, to some point intersecting General Burnside's road near Worthington, in Greene county, or in Owen county, a distance of ninety miles, to be celled "The Evansville and Indianapolis Railroad Company." This road, in connection with Gen. Burnsidc's road, will form a continuous and ahno.-t straight road from Evansville to Indianapolis, a distance of about 150 miles. Messrs. Fellovves & Merritt arc the owners of the old Evansville, Indianapolis and Cleveland Straight Line Railroad, having purchased the same at a judicial sale. This load is graded and nearly fitted for f lie rail from Evansville to the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad at Washington, in Daviess county, sonK' fifty miles, at an expense of nearly half a million of dollars. Wc are informed rhat it is the intention of these gentlemen to put in this road as stock, sit greatly reduced valuation, and if tic-nations sufficient 1:0 complete these fifty-five miles for r.he rail, and to extend the road some thirty miles further to the before named point of intersection with Gen. Ikmside's road, that is, to fit these thirty miles lor the rail say 8350.0(H) to $100,000, in all, can be obtained, then to otter the stock to Eastern capitalists, and as soon as the stock is subscribed for, to begin the work and press it forward with energy. It is understood that the city of Evansville and the towns, counties and people along the contemplated line, are eager for the construction of the road and stand ready, in some way, to secure the requistite amount of donations, and that the new company have good reason to expect the hearty cooperaof General Burnside in their enterprise.
