Indiana State University. The University Trustees have create'.! an additional Chair, in the Law Department, by which arrangement, law students ea have tuition during the nine months of the college year. Judge Bicknell is chosen to fill oae of the chairs the other is yet to be filled. For a Law Library, $2,000 was set aside ; the sum of $500 was appropriated for the purchase of books for the University Library. Rev. Stephen Bowers, of Vincennes, had the degree of A.M. conferred upon him ; J. W. Gordon of Indianapolis, -was made an L.L.D. The Degres of A.M. was also conferred upon the class of '66. Two new Ch&irs -Modern Languages, and Civil Engineering and Mining, were also created, but, as yet, no choice of Professors; has been made. It was suggested by Barnabas C. Ilobbs, Superintendent of Public Instruction, that the town and county ought to put up a Graded School Building, and in connection with it a building to contain Prof. Owen's Cabinet. Heretofore, in the Law Department, Seniors were required to pay 830.00; Juniors 26.00, with a graduating fee of $5.00. The Law Department is now free to all. The amount thus, saved, will be quite an item to such students as are dependent upon their individual exertions, to secure an education. Chronicles. The reduction cf the National Debt during the moath of June, is shown by the official report of the Secretary of the Treasury to be
$16,410,131 54: the reduction of
the debt for the first four months of
Geaeral Grant's administration is shown to be thirty-six million, four huadred and sixty thousand, seven
hundred and seventy-nine dollars and forty-three certs. We have
looked carefully through our Dem
oci atic exchanges, to see what would l)e said about this promising state of
affairs, but they maintain a sullen silence on the subject. Why is it ; are they not rejoiced al; the brighten ing prospects of die country, or -a a they see no virtue in a Republican administration ?
A Railroad Item. Editor Pkhocuat: It is very affable, indeed it is, to sen how our worthy friend of the Progress laughs at our efforts in striving to procure a Kail Kond, East and West, ho must he very mad about something, wonder what it is? wonder i;:' he would not like a pass over it now 'I If he
wi';l have the kindness to call on uie, I will give l.irn o:ie to Starvation Bottom or Saddler's Or?en. R. The above we find in the Bloom -ington Democrat of last Saturday. "R," it is generally understood, means Professor Raney. -'Affable, '' according to Webster's Dictionary, means "civil, easy of manner or conversation," so that it is somewhat difficult to understand the Professor's meaning. The Professor accuses us of laughing at his (the Professor's) efforts to procure a railroad. Now the Professor was never more mistaken in his life. We want to see the Professor's railroad, and would willingly pay so.ne taxes to procure it. How much will the Professor pay ? We are in earnest about the railroad business, and would like to sec some of the prominent railroad men who wore to consult with the Professor, and many more of the business men of Bloomington would like to ;$ee them. The Professor exhibits a very unkind and unchristian spirit, the Professor does, in signifying his desire to give us "a pass to Starvation Bottom." If the Professor has so much of this world's goods, and the power that money gives, the Professor should entertain a feeling
of charity toward us poor Bloomingtonites. We cannot all be Professors of Mineralogy, nor builders of railroads, and hence haven't the money nor the influence which is the exclusive property of the Professor. This is our misfortune, not our fault. Toward t'ae Professor we entertain none but the kindest feelings, and humbly beg that the Professor will allow us, aud many more of the people of Blooming ton, to entertain our own views in the matter of railroads that the Professor will permit us poor wretches, who unfortunately own property in
Bloomington, to express our feelings occasionally, though oar views should not entirely agree with the Professor':!. Grant us this our Prayer, O, Professor, and thine shall be the power and glory, forever and aver. Equation of Time.

Meeting, when the brass band came past the Methodist Church Their minds were prepared for worship their eyes turned inward, reviewing the acts of the past week, and with becoming humility they were about to
pour forth their souls in hymns of
