Five Cents' Worth of Orange Peel. A man from the country invested five cents in Hartford, Conn., in the purchase of an orange, and preparatory to getting himself outside of it, Uirew the peel on the sidewalk. Soon after a young woman came alon, slipped upon the peel, and fell, breaking her leg. The woman was to have been married the next day, but wasn't. The man who was to marry her had come frcm Si. Paul, Minn., and was ob'iged to return on account of business, to await the recovery of the girl. On hi$ way back he, uufortunately took a train on the Erie Railroad, which ran off the track, ind his shoulder blade was broken, forcing him to atop at Dunkirk for repairs. On getting back to St. Paul, ha found that his forced absence had upset a business arrangement which he had expected to complete, a pecuniary loss to him of 5,000. Meantime the injured girl suffered a relapse, which so enfeebled her health tl: at

her marriage was delayed, which had a bad effect upon the youag man, and he finally broke the engagement and married a widow in Minnesota, with four small children. This so worked upon the mind of the girl that she is now in the insane hospital at Middletown, Connecticut. Her father, outraged by the conduct of the young man, brought a suit for breach of promise, and has juat recovered ten thousand dollars. The anxiety and expense of the whole affair thus far have been enormous, as anybody can see. Similar easts are likely to occur, so long as people will persist in throwing oraegs peel around loose.

Boa Power Applied in Machinery. Those who have never visited Mr. Halfman'a brewery, and witnessed the performances of the trained dog, have no idea of a great "curiosity." All the water used about the brewery is pumped by this wonderful dog, who gets into a huge hollow wheel and starts it to revolving, after the tread-mil' fashion. The wheel works a force pump, which conveys the water through eighty-five feet of rubber ho?e, tc any part of the brewery, a id bv the attachment of a "nozzle," the water may bo thrown, in great volumes to the hisrht of iiftv feet.

This ingenious arrangement is almost as good as a fire engine, a ad Aoi;d be the salvation of the brcw-ei-y or any buildings adjacent thereto, in case of fire. One dog does all the work ; and, instead of disliking it, nothing delights biro more than to mount the wheel f;nd si the pump in motion. Notwithstanding the door of the wheel is left open whenever still, the faithful animal likes the sport :50 well that he remains constantly inside, where he is ever ready for service, on the shortest notice. The English law is certainly superior to ours in the manner in which it deals with the embezzlement of money ami property. A man named Shipman has just been sent to the prison for twelve months by the Commissioner in Bankruptcy; for defrauding a bank, of which he was minager. He hail a secret partnership with a broker outside, and allow him to borrow large sums from the bank on insufficient security. The consequence was a loss to the institution of !?23,000, which the Commissioner held was owing to Shipman's violation of his duty, and punished him accordingly. An Englishman was telling the late Col. Isaac O. Barnes, of Massachusetts, of the great rate of speed attained by railroad trains, in England, and said, "Why s r, in my country they go 75 miles an hour." "They do!" says Barnes, "'.veil. they couldn't run very long at that rate, or they'd run off the infernal little island!"

I. O. O. F. The next Grand Lodge of tho United States meets in San Francisco, California. The representatives will be allowed a free pass over the Pacific Road, and a train of cars for their own occupation. The Order in California has donated one hundred thousand dollars in addition to the usual mileage and per diem, to be used in defraying extra expenses. Preparations are now being made for a trip from San Francisco to Honolulu. At a railroad meeting in Lafayette,

Judge Pettitt said "the time was

nications, such as railroads, will do all the transportation of persons and property, and the inland waters, lakes and rivers, will be remitted to

with the sentiment of the celebrated

English engineer, Brunell. who, in

one of his reports, remarked that rivers were only useful as feeders

for canals.
