A SritAXGE Custom. Most of our readers here in 'he city, and many throughout the emmhy, will recollect the circumstances of lite death of Frank Staik, in 18t2, while throwing a tripiiisinnmcrsault at Tndiamipolis. He is said to have been the only man whoever performed the feat successfully, and he was killed by son e mischance in his lat attempt. His rema us were brought here for interment, rnd now sleep in the old graveyard. Last Friday evening the band elonging to Forepaugh's menage ie, repaired to the graveyard and played a dirge over the grave, as also orer that of Hamblin iSlicperd. On inquiry we were inforned that since btark vac illci1,tle land of every show that h is passed h?re, has paid similar horor to his remains. To us, this custom, w lile it is new and strange, is also all meting. This remembrance of a departed comrade, a man they ecu 3d not have possibly h.ive known except by report, has in it muci to interest us. and it may be well to reflect on ti c feeling of brotherhood expressed by this beautiful custom, whic i will doubtless cause then to pause and pay this tribute of respect to one of their numner, for age-, to come. A Sacramento, Cal., paper says, ''It is current y reportetl that anew tribe of Indians have oeen discovered near Independence, on the line of the Central Pacific, who seem to be but little posted in railroad matters. The other day, to their great surpris?, a locomotive passed by.and they determined to lay in ambush for, or pursue and lariat the fiery monster. Accordingly they made a very strong lariat, or rawhide rops, and perceiving the mystery approaching, sketched it across the track, cither 2nd being held firmly by twenty or thirty of the would be captors. Th 3 engine came thundering along, ;he lariat struck just below the head-light, and the Indians gave some of the loftiest tight rope performances ever seen in the Great West,"
A friend bands us the following,

worth : ".Protect j our melon, squash and cucumber vines thus: Take sticks four inches long and a half inch in diameter pine is best. Wrap one inch of the end in a piece ef cotton or .inen. Dip this in turpentine, and stick one or two in each hill, leaving only the wrapped part above ground. The odor of the turpentine docs the business.'"' m John Lunyon attempted to cut his throat, with i razor, at Vincenne, a few days ago. He made a gash under his chin, three or four incite long, when his strength failed him, ami his hand fell, with ths razor in
it. He wanted to escape a lingering death by couaimpi ion. A. Kirpen, a merchant of Chicago, sports ti pair of whiskers eight feet long. His beard has been trowing nine years, and is very Sneand dark. When standing, the end of "the whiskers art held in one hand to keep it off of the ground. Mr. Kirpen renaarked, nine years ago, that ha would never shave until Douglcs was elected President A sie k man, si ightly convalesei lg, recently in conversation ivith a pious friend", congratulating liim upon his recovery, and asking who his physician was, replied : "Dr. Jones brought me through.' "No, no," said his friend, "God I rdnght yon out of your illness, not the Doctor." "Well, mar be he iid,
but I am c?rtain the Doctor will charge me for it."
The Laporie Argus sa-s : "A
farmer, on Tuesday last, brought ninety bushels of potatoes to this
market, for which he received just enough to pay the dress makers' charge for making two ladies' suits one for his: wife, and the other for his daughter."
A strange suit yns deeaded in Col ambiana county, Ohio, the other day. A son sued bis father tor bounty money, earned in the war, the father claimed the money on account of his son being a minor when he enlisted. A judgment was rendered in favor of th ison for $286. The father appealed. The old fellow and his appeal should be incontinently kicked out of court together. A. lady - reached the passenger depot in Itayton, Ohio, the other day, jist as the train she intended to take was leaving, and as she stood si most crying with vexation on the platform, a gentleman arrived at the depot on a full run, with hi.s carpet jag in his ban 1, his coat on his arm, and his face streaming with perspiration. As he looked on the train, now fast moving away, he sat
down on his carpet bag, wiped his
face, and very deliberately and emphatically said : "D n that trai i !" The lady heard bin:, and smiling upon him with a lady's sweetness, said : "Thank you, sir."
