The Adventures or a IMrtl. A widow named Rice, (nu de a widow by the operations of the divorce law) came to Bloomington from New Albany, some time ago, having in her possession $700, the amount given her as alimony ,ly the court. While on the train, she discovered that a young man, Join Bird, who had been in the employ of her husband, was also a passenger, "by chance." Mrs. Riee was intending a visit to lior relatives, living some distance in i he country, and although Bird was on his way to Chicago, he made it convenient io stop off at Bloomington, and go with Mrs. Riceto a.hotel. Next morning a conveyance was procured to go into the country, and Mrs. Rice concluded she ought to deposit her money in bank, as it was unsafe to carry it. Bird kindly volunteered to deposit, it, aud although Mrs. R. objected, Bird insisted, and finally earned 'his point took the money, was gone a short time, and returned with a sealed envelope, which heinfbrnuid the confiding old woma:i, (who, by the way, could not read) contained a certificata of deposit for the seven hundred dollars. The New Albany Lkixu- u has a long story about Tobc Smith going fishing, puttii g himself outside of a barrel of beer, and then falling into the creek, where, after floating around two or three hours, he was poled ashore, wrung, and spread out to drv. If Tobe did do that, it was a shrewd business transaction on his part, and via' 11 wager seven dollars in bad accounts, that while floating about, he was selling spectacles to the goggle-eyes. He never forgets his "bh."

The 1 iiteenth Amendment Was passed by a majority of both Houses of the legislature last week, thus malting the number of States that have ratified the Amendment twenty-three bat five more beingneeded to make it a part of the Constitution. The Democrats, with their usiual cunning, began to plot against the adoption of the amendment several weeks before i.t came up, but the Republicans had determined taat a factious minority should no longer control Legislative action, and the 15th amendment, although not passed by a quorum, was adopted by a mojority of the members of both Houses. Of coarse the Democrats will howl fearfully over this "outrage," as they term it, bet we have good Democratic precedent fcr this action. In an article on this subject, the Indianapolis Journal says: 'The Senate of the United States settled this effictaally in the memorable case of Jesj I). Bright and Graham N. Fitcb, clooted Senators by a joint convention of a majority of thu whole nurr.ber of members of the Legislature, but convisried by the vote and consent of bnt ono boose, and with bat a minority of the other house present. Here, there was totally lacking t he fori a of consent to the electoral convention by one house, and totally lacking a majority of one hausa to give VRlidity to the action of that convention. Yet tna Senate held t'aat, as a majority of the ono hundred and fifty members who composo both houses, was present, thjre was tho substar.ee of the State Authority presant, and the substantial power of tbe State having bftjn exercised, though in ui regard of forms, t he United States would rccogniza aud aept it. In tho -'resent case a. majority of both houses, on a by a fall compHanctt even with tho forms of he State Consti ;ution, the other by the majority required by the State Constitution, but in disregard of a form which the Bright case decidel to be unimportant, hav ratified tbe amendment. The substance of the State authority, and a portion even of tbe non-essentifJ State fcrrus, were present and exercised in tho act. If the Bright and Fitch election was valid, this ratification is a for. wri valid. It will be so accepted by
uongi ess, we nave no aouot, unci we aon i think any reasonable and candid man has any d ubt about it. Tbe amendment is a settled thine- It ia sure of twenty-nine States, and the long agony is over." We very much doubt if the Democrats, who have so violently opposed the ratification of the 15th Amendment, will acknowledge it in 1870. The struggle then will be for t he votes of colored men, and your radical Democrat will swear that he "always favored negro suffrage."
