FROM FLORIDA. Official. Camp Pieece, on Indian River, J January 17, 1838. Cosimodore The day before yesterday, on the head waieis of Jupiter river, we found a fresh trail, which, in following, led us to herds of cattle and horses; amongst theso we captured a squaw. The woman, on being questioned, told us of several parties of Indians camped in the neighborhood. We took her as a guide, and after a march of five miles ' truck a large beaten trail at the head of a cypress swamp; at the sime instant we heard the war whoop before us. The charge was made across a deep swamp in ahandsome manner, and the fire became general alonjj the line. Acting Lieutenant Harrison, of the Navy, was soon shot down, and his division left without an officer. Lieutenant Fowler, of the Artillery, was directed to penetrate the swamp to the right, whilst the remaining two divisions, now rnder the command of acting Lieutenant McArtl mr, ol the Navy, continued the advance in line. The enemy was driven seven or eight hundred yards to the margin of a larger swamp, where they made n most determined lesUtancc. .-Lieutenant McArthur was here badly shot, and the surgeon, Hector Lcitr.er, killed. The men were' fast falling, oxd the evening closing upon us, and havingalready r.s many wounded as 1 could hope to carry safely to the boats I concluded :o draw olf the men, and return to our lauding. On re-crossing the swamp, Lieutenant Fowler's division was well placed, and, by a steady fire, covered the retreat of our little t arty, lust his division soon shared like the oth-

rs; Laoutenant l-owler ocmg snot down, leaving

Captain Johnston, the Adjutant, save myself, the or.

ly officer on his feet. Lieutenant Fowler's division, under the guidance of Captain Johnston, closed the rear; and to the steady courage and conduct of this fHcer, we are mainly indebted for the comparative ncurity in which we returned to our boats. The first charge was made about four in the afternoon, end the filing was well sustained until half past seven at night. The enemy wa3iri greater force than we expected, Rr.d outnumbered our party so much as to cover .ur flanks; the squaw whom we brought off says vv.c hundred. I am inclined to believe that the other carr.p g.vl.cnd upon us during the action. What the Indian loss may be, I cannot say. Three bodies were passed as we advanced, and five Mhcrs were seen to fall by more than those who fchot them. We used, part ol the time, the buckfchot cat ridge, which must have done the. execution In mentioning the conduct of the command, I will only say that the officers were all shot Pt the head of their divisions, cheering them on; and I will not conclude without noticing the excellent deportment of Sergeants Low and Cantwell, of comany 1, first artillery. Acting Lieutenant Murphv, with part of his di

vision, was absent on detached service; twenty men were lell with the boat; so that the command engaged numbered somewhat above eighty. Our loss has been considerable, and in the death of Dr. Leituer, irreparable. Ho proved him self a man of singular ability, modesty, and courage. Having lost t-ur surgeon, it became my duty to convey the wounded to n post. Kil'ed. Dr. Leitner, surgeon; Thomas Tait, seaman ; James McLane, seaman ; A W, Fullerton, company I, first artillery ; Jacob Kepler, do. Wounded. Lt. Mr. Powell, Lieutenant Comii onding; Acting Lieutenant 1! . N. Harrison, (seercly;) Acting Lieutenant P. McArthur, (severely, twice;) Lf. W. II. Fowler, U. S. Army, commanding company I, first artillery, (twice;) Sergeant Long, first artillery, (twice;) Crocks, orderly to commandant, company I, first artillery, (twice;)

menced what they term a cultivation of them, such, I suppose, as planting beans and cucumbers in December. And now, the Indian title not having been extinguished four months, these speculators and squatters claim a premption right to the lands, at one dollar and twenty-Jive cents per acre, when at public auction they would sell for from ticenjy to

fifty dollars per acre. This bill as it now stands,

would therefore give away tho public property, to a few speculators and those employed by them, from

one to three millions or dollars. Jt would seem, in

deed, as if it was so intended; because the frienda of the bill in the Senate refused an amendment, the

effect of which wouldjiave been to prevent this un

blushing prodigality. I his is one case, numerous others might be mentioned.

"Why are you like a'.Tailor?'said a dandy to a ladv who sat by him. "I dont know," said she,

"unless I am sitting so near a goose.1'

From the National Intelligencer. FROM THE VERMONT FRONTIER. Even sines penning the preceeding paragraph, we have received the following information from a cource entirely to be relied on, to which we entreat the attention of Members of Congress and the Executive authorities : Extract (f a letter to a gentleman, in this city, dated in Vermont. Feb. 1 Ith, 1838. , "The Canada fever is in some degree revived here. It is supposed that an incursion into the Lowtf Frovince is soon to be made, and at tho same time n rrcneral rising is to tako place. The arnuTartd munitions of war, collected and purchased in this s'ate, (Vermont.) have, in tho course -of the last week, been transported to the frontier. From the

increased vigilance in the Province, and the collecting rf arms una n. en, it is apparent that the plans of the Patriots have been communicated to the Canadian Government. The efforts of the Patriots, 1 think, must fail. The force of tho Government is too gn at to be overcome by the means now in the lip.mis of the Revolutionists. We arc expecting every day to hear rfthe attempt lo enter the Province."

1 he Deuhatn Patriot says that sausages made of red llanr.tl and potatoes eat very well; but when brown paper is added, they are hardly fit for dogs to cat. The "Spy in Washington' cies the following dc's as a partial ilhuiration of the operation of tho pre-emption bill, which the administia'ion ha3 just f j reed through the i'enate. I will state for your information one fact, in do

ing which I shall give you but a very limited idea of l f t--Vl-.l'l ll !

I oinl, in the heart ot Indiana. 1 his land cost the United Stales about one dollar per acre. Much of it U thi finest farming land in the State, and is voi th from twenty to fifty dollars per acre. As soon ei this treaty wai concluded, sqautters rushed upon tiicso U:ii, txn-l, calling themselves settlers, com-
