From the New York Farmer. ' HLOODY MURRAIN OHIO CATTLE. I). K. Minor, Esq. Peak oiit: Having a few days ago lost a fine steer (broup;l)t from the State of Ohio" last autumn,) by the disease commonlv called red water, or bloody murrain,

and as some of your correspondents have stated in the Farmer, that this disease is occasioned by leeches in

the liver, the cattle drinking water containing them; and in that manner it is supposed they find their way

into the stomach, and ultimately into the liver, perforating the veins and arteries, which produce the disease above noticed, and as it was the first time I ever had an animal attacked with this disease, 1 was determined to examine and judge for myself. Having after a good deal of awkwardness, succeed in disembowelling the animal, mv first essay was to examine the liver.

This I dissected in.all manner of forms and shapes, but

could not detect any thing that to my unpractised eyes

appeared wrong. I then returned to the carcase to examine the other viscera-, but could discover nothing

sufficient to cause so fatal a disease. J5emg not yet sa

tisfied. I made a second examination of the liver, and

there, to my astonishment, found embeded in the substance! of the liver, to all appearance, a leech full one and a half inches in length. I state ihe facts such as I

fmiml tlim nnd shrill mnkfi no further comments, but 1

hope others who may have an opportunity will exam ine for themselves. In his part of the country the far

mers loose numbers of their cattle brought', from Ohio,

and it is considered useless to employ any remedies the disease cannot be known until the urine becomes

bloody, and then from 12 to 24 hours gcncrally.puts an

end to loth the disease and the animal together.

Cattle brought from some particular localities are

considered to be more liable to the disease than those

from other situations, and experienced feeders generally inquire from what particular part of the country cattle are brought, ere they will venture to buy. Yours,ViC. J R. G.

WORSE THAN SAVAGE. In the schooner Atlas, Captain Curtis, arrived yesterday from Washington, N. C. came passengers Mr. John4Mather, of this city, a passenger on board the Home, and Conrad Hilton of Albany, a waiter on board that vessel. Our news collector sent us up the following memorandum: "Roth were saved on a spar, and one of the ladies who was saved was lashed to the same spar. Captain Curtis & the above passengers inform us, that "the passengers Faved were roblied of every thing by the people on frhore. All the trunks which drifted onVshore, more than a hundred in all, w ere broken open, cut to pieces, and rifled of their contents. The dead bodies we re roblx'd, and from one were taken five sovereigns and a gold watch. One of the ladies and a gentleman went to n house and claimed iheir trunks, but were abused -with curses. The lady Legged for her clothes, as she had none except those in which she floated on shore; ;but the freebooters were deaft to her entreaties, nnd drove her from the house." These things demand investigation by the local authorities. The Southern papers are loud in their chargcus of wrong doingiym the Iiart of responsible persons, and they call on New Yor;ei8, for the honor of their city, to investigate the subject, an1 find out the causes of this most aw ful calamity. If what they say is true, and if the statements in the mouths of many of our citizens acquainted w ith such subjects are true, the silence of ninety of our fellowbemgs stretched in death on the beach of North Carolina, calls for retribution. In no other way than by a judicial investigation can the truth be brought out. JVe to York Journal of Commerce. Singular Occurrence. The follow ing singular accident occurred at Kingsburg, in tl.o north ol Prussia, ?;hort time since. A bottle of water had been placed upon the sill of a window, exposed to the sun, which was shining strongly upon it. The vessel was so placed

lhat the water refracted and concentrated the rays of

the heat like a convex glass, and directed their focal force upon a part of the window frame, which in a little time was set on fire. No serious damage was done, fjr the fire wa3 soon perceived; but this occurrence, .collated with many circumstances of a destructive fire which occurred in that place on the 14th of June, 1811, i thought to explain the causes of that conflagration, which have hitherto remained a mystery.
