ORIGINAL POETRY.
For the Pott. V. OMAN'S LOVE. I trinj to thee a sullied name. And blighted hopes He aid s The first, the toy of idle fame, The last, a Phantom, fled. I bring to thee a brow and cheek, Pallid with vigil stern, And lips that but for pride would speak What those have bade me learn. Put jft I britt a fpirit proud, in rpite of scorn and wrong; Asc.i t that never yet hath bow'd. Though suffering deep and long A heart that yet intensely glows V.'ith passions still the same, A when hope's syren voice aros, To mount the prudent flame. If lighted hoprs and sullied name. And broken fortune's scare? Thy jrentle soul, or quench the flamo That occc was li-hted there; If pallied brow, and waited ciictfc, Appal! thy timid heari; And all the conflicts these bespeak, I biota ihte, and dej-art! Nay tell me nut of fortune, fame. Or blighted hope- She cried. Thou say'st thy heart is still the same, Love cove: nought Leide. What tho-igh a witlieiing breath dare blow Upon that name so dear; T:.y foul hath bow'd not thus I know Unlit hath no dwelling there. If broxen fortune's inquired nam , And blighted hope are thine, The vow that made our fate the time, fchali m ike thee also mine. Thy warned cheek and pal'.ied brow, Love's smile many yet illume; What iu.M I by my early vow! To cheer and t.'ethy doom! Not all the ills which thou can! nam?. My swerveWs soul can frlcht; Then smi!e!-thou knewVt air.-ctiona flime In dsrkr. ess shines moa bright. OCT A VI A. Spe.iecr Indiana, .ivg'Mt. 20th 1837.
