tavrc OF nit: COUNTRY. hi noticing the unusual circumstance that there bad been no public or general celebration of the late Anniversary of I ii Ic penitence in the metropolis of the Union, r in the neighboring cities of Baltimore and Alexandria, the National Intcll'geneer makes the following appropriate and eloquent remarks on the present situation of the country : JVrM. Jl,tn. This unwonted intermisMoii cannot, however, constitute a subject of reproach at a tims of national de-prcj-sion and general gloom. Tasting and prayer, indeed, would have better accorded with the unhappy 'state of the country, and with the general feeling, than Yeastim: and public rejoicing. The declaration of independence in 17 70 found the people of these States weak and poor, it is true, b it nerved with resolution, and cheered by hope. Through blood and suffering, t'.iey redeemed their solemn and perilioud pledge, and bequeathed to their children liberty and independence, tfixt -one years have passed by, and the anniversary of the glorious day find the nation bankrupt, the People almost in depair and liberty itself in jeopardy. Is it surprising, at such a time, that the voice of gladness sh uld be hush'd, and the verv gmis that weie wont to

You will now look to those, whorhj if you persist, either premature death or a leng servitude awaits.1 Then his wife and children embraced him; and the lamentation set up by the whole group of females, and their wailing for themselves and native country, at length broke down the man's resolution ; theii embracing his relatives, he dismisses them; he himself removes back his camp from the city.
