The Blacksmith's Bottle. A blacksmith in extensire, business, had a bottle that held exactly a pint, and in the large village where he resided, it was goon known in its various trips to the stores as an exact gauge for that quantity , and on its appearance for replenishing, was filled without recourse to the measure. This bottle became celebrated. Eighteen years it performed the drudgery of being the medium of conveying the ruinous beverage to the owner and his workmen. During this course of service, the shop in which it was so conspicuous an appendage, was

the kind, if persisted in, and to be given to all who complete the

course with credit. The government

The bottle has survived its owner, who has recently passed into the grave at the age of 60 year?, a veteran toper; although he ori'inally possessed a constitution that 'under diflerent habits, promised to carry him to the period attained by many a temperate pilgrim, that of 80 years or more; and instead of competenca to his survivors, ha9 left the little bottle emptied of its contents, as their only legacy. This veteran bottle lus been the medium of conveying more wealth from its owner und his workmen, than would have sufficed to purchase the most extensive and valuable farm the country can boast. As well might

the occupant! of the shop have heaped up ceals on their forge, tuid put their utmost exertions in exercise upon their bellows to put out the f;re , as to undertake to quench alcoholic thirst with ardent spririts. The more frequent the recurrence to 'the little bottle forsuppl ice, the more powerful is the desire to embrace it again and again, und the more frequent the embrace, the greater and more certein the necessity of return. Are there not many more little bottles that are conveying the wealth, by daily, small, certain and sure steps, out of the possession of the owners, and pouring into their systems a tide of ruin which will never cease to flow, and which will finally overwhelm them in a destruction tlut has eternity for its duration. '.'I havo learned, from good Authority, that Senor Castillo, Mexican Charge il'Affaires at Washington, on hearingat Philadelphia, where he usually reside!, of the arrival of Santa Anna at Washington, wrote to his Excellency a friendly but energetic letter, expressing Vis surprise atthe ridiculousjinjudicious, and unpatriotic course he was pursuing in entering into negotiations with the President of the United States or his Government, j having for their object to carry into effect the treaty which he concluded with the Texans, while he was their prisoner. Mr. Castillo informed Sauta Anna that the Mexican Congress had declared null the said treaty, mnd and that besides, the nation at large tud condemned the whole of the proctedingg in Texas. He also reminded him, that, although now at liberty, he was not authorized to enter into any negotiation or treaty, either with the Texan Agent or the American Government, and finally, that, as the representative of his country, it was his duty to pro

I wish to drop a few hints cn your most common diseases of this country, and particularly on fever, as it has been the study of most Physicians for thespaec of 2272 years at which time it appears to have been first spoken of by Doctor Hippocrate, who is to this day believed to have given the best pathology. Hence the physicians of modern times, or of the dogmatic sect havo at all times acknowledged him their leader. Ilia opinions have been respected as oracles not only in the schools of medicine, but even in the c0"r'9 of law; indeed the qualifications and duties of a physician was never more fully-exemplified than by his pen. He admitted ho one to his instruction without the solemnity of anonth that they
