The Congressional election will take place on Monday next. It is important that the successful candidate lhould do honor to the oRicc instead of it doing honor to him. Then of the two candidates before us, which should be elevated to that highly responsible station? In the language of Jefferson take the honest man. Honesty is the first prerequisite qualification to office. There is no way that we can better arrive nt the honesty cfmen than by impartially viewing their conduct. Judge Wick who ha heretofore been a candidate, was sup ported by the Anti Jackson pirly nnd why? Mainly because hi political course teemed with opposition to the present Chief Magistrate, who he denounced as a d-n old rascal, and that he would be willing to take up his ri iU and fight for tli U. St.itrs Uuk in opposition to Jackson. Hesajg he has not charged his view. Then
he is still n United States Dink ad Vocate, a supporter of Clay's Lmd lill Sec. In short he h an opposer tl those measures which Van Duron li is (fledged himself to sustain r'irrclly in pppQMtiou to his (Mr. Wick' late vote lr Presidetv. . men represent himself as being no party man, and by hints and itiuendoes endeavors to. convey the impression that the friends of Gen. Harrison have nothing to fear from him, thereby hoping to obtain their quiet support, whilst through the Democrat a public & strenuous appeal is made to the Vran Buren party to support him because he is a Van Buren man. Now in our humble opinion the present state of the times requires plain open-dealing. It is not a time when aspirants for the national Legislature should play a double game. Great principles, principles deeply involving the prosperity of Indiana, and of the whole west, will doubtless be agitated and discussed during the resent session of Congress. BREAD STUFFS. Anibng the reasons adduced for the present extraordinary high prices of grain and flour, is one which is truly alarming. It is stated in one of the most respectable and well informed journals of New York and the information is no doubt derived from authentic sources that the whiskey manufacturers in that State consune no less than 1000,000 bushels of grain per month! Thus converting into a poisonous and destructive -fluid that substance which all bountiful Nature has provided pec'uliary, for the nourishment and stay human life! Fr trhe liidiana Journal. THii CONtiaF.SSlo.NAl. Et.tXTION . - It is perhaps generally known that on the first Monday of January ensuing, an election is to be.
held for a Representati ves in Congress from this district tt) fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of the. lion. Geo. L.
Kinnard. Although several
other gentlemen have been spoken of by their respective friends
two candidates only have been
innounced, and the contest will
undoubtedly be between them
viz: Judge Wick of Marlon, and
Mr Herod of Bartholomew. It
lad not been our intention to say
any thing in the Journal concerning this election, but the course
which has been taken by the In
diana Democrat, which is no
DOUBT SANCTIONED BY JuDE YVlCK,
demands some remarks from us.
Judge Wick is ushered forth in the Democrat as a friend to the new administration, at whose
earnest solicitation, it is said, he
permitted his name to be presented to the people. Judge Wick therefore suffer himself to be presented in the columns of the Democrat as the Van Buren can
didate for Congress, and of
course, he necessarily drives those who opposed that gentle
man's election into the support of h'is competitor. It is true that he does privately to the Harrison
and in biv'nr of the distribution of
! i i ii- .
t tin surplus revenue. 1 1 is po luteal sentiments cortuiJe uiih those of a large majority of tlie people of the District. The Democrat says that Mr. II. refused to vote at the late election of President. This is not the case . At the time of the election he was attending Court in Morgan county, where the. judges of the election refn?ed
to permit nny citizens from other counties to vote, and of course he was not allowed to vote. In conclusion, wc will just ob
serve that the people of the. District distrust Mr. Van l iren, and there would seem to be the most safety in chicling an individual who would be bee to make opposition to all attempts to saddle
upon the people, measures which may be detrimental to their interest. Wc. probably may not nllude to i, lis subject again. We
should not have saifi a word but for the uncalled for remarks of the Democrat, which we suppose Were sanctioned by Judge Wick.
Jud:;eWick at a very critical
period, abandoned his friends and joined those who had always opposed him. If those w ho were formerly his friends should refuse now to vote for hint, he may at
tribute it to his own abandonment of them at the time when
they were most in need of sup
port. If his newly formed friends
can elect him it is well, but on
the ground of principle his claims
upon the suffrages of the oppon
ents of Martin Van Buren are
less than if he had never been bne
