The Patch on Mirrj’s Breeches. 11 irpu’r Weekly relaice tlie follow5:ig anecdotes at Mr. Marcy: While he » us Governor ol’thU State, he wits visiting Newburgh on some public occasion, and with n party of gentlemen, Whigs and Democrats, «us at the Orange Hotel. Good humor was prevailing, and otic story suggested another. he Governor always enjoyed a story, and could tell one with excellent effect. A Whig lawyer was present, and the Governor, recognizing him, said: “Ah, yes; I’ll tell you a good story of Spooner. The other day he came up to Albany, on his way to tho If hig Convention at I'tica, and so he took it in his way to call on me, to get a pardon for n convict at Sing Sing.— I heard the case, examined the documents, and being satisfied that all was right, agreed to grant the request.- — Spooner handed me the paper to indorse, and I wrote: “Let pardon be j granted—in. L. Marcy’, "h*?n Spooner cried out; “Hold, hold, (io\ - ernor! that’s the wrong paper!'’ And. sure enough, it was a Whig upvech that ht was going to make at L'lica , abusing me the worst possible way. But 1 had granted pardon in advance, and I suppose he committed the offense afterward.”

Tltc story was received with great applause, and Spooner being looked to for n response, instantly went on with the following, which, tor an extempore story, certainly is capital: “Yes, gentlemen, yes, I did. And when the convention was over we went to Niagara Falls, and as we were dragging on by stage, over miserable corduroy roads, hanging our heads against the top of the conch, and then comiutr down us if wo were to go ' through the bottom, the stage came to a dead half; the driver dismounted, opened the door, and requested us all *1o d-scend. WlKiHT Slrjclinlno Is hnluml. The source from whence this poison, i which bus gained so worldwide celebrity rcctitlv, is obtained, is tints noticed in Ibckens’a Household Words: In Ceylon, and several districts of India, grows a moderate-sized tree, with thick shining leaves, and a short' crooked stem. In fruit season it is readily recognized by its rich orangecolored berries, about as large as golden pippins. The rind is bard and 1 smooth, and covers a white, soft pulp, tho favorite food of many kinds of | birds, within which are the flat, round seeds, not an inch in diameter, ash1 gray in color, sad covered with very silky hairs. The Germans fancy they . can discover a resemblance in them to gray eyes, and call them crow’s eyes, but the likeness is purely imaginary. The tree is the strychnine nux comlea, and the nut is the deadly poison nut. Tho latter was early used as n J medicine by the Hindoos, and its najture ami properties understood by ! Oriental doctors long before it was known to foreign nations. “Dog-kill- | cr,” and “fish-scale,” arc two of its Arabic names. It is stated that at , present the natives ofllindostan often take it for many months continuously, in much tho same manner ns opi- i um-caters cat opium. They commence with taking the eighth of a nut a day, and gradually increase their allowance to an entire nut, which would be about twenty grains. ,k r they oat directly before or after foo t no unpleasant effects produced; but if -duty ty v precaution spasms result”'
