Our city has again been disgraced by a riot, or rather a aeries of riots, commencing on the evo of the 4th, and continuing almost as wo go to press. The Oriyiu of the Biol. —In New York, it is well known, there arc a number of political and rowdy associations, the members of which are of the lowest ranks in life and of the most unscrupulous characters. These associations an; ready to undertake any species of rascality. Robbery and murder arc child's play to them, i. Their members are or bullies and lighters by profession, and thiy arc accustomed to undertake the manage- I meat of ward politics by the job. In the Sixth ward there arc two clubs of this description, made up of professional bullies belonging to the fighting ranks of the Democratic party. These clubs are the tools of the two Democratic factions. One, culled the “Bowery Boys,” under the leadership of Pat Matthews, a well-known custom-house officer, and having headquarters at a drinking-house No. 40 Bowery. Tho other rej dees in the elegant name of “Dead Rabbits,” and, wo understand, obeys the orders oT "Tom Walsh,” said to be foreman of Engine Co. No. 21, whose house is corner of Chambers and Centre streets. The “Dead Babbits” nro inhabitants of Mulberry, Mott, Baxter, Bayard i and some parts of Elizabeth street, I and are very bad fellows the whole of them.
The Bowery Hoys re assembled in the neighborhood of the Bowery, at an early hour on .Saturday morning, in large numbers, and began making active preparations fora defense, should they be attacked by the Dead Hubbits. They first dispatched scouting parties in all directions throughout the ward, to watch the movements of, the Dead Babbits, ami keep them well posted, should they take any measures for attack. At the same time tho Bowery Boys sot about arming themselves with pistols, revolvers, ammunition, &c., a large supply of which was deposited in a place selected for that purpose, and a squad of boys selected to run to and fro with pistols, ns fast as they could be discharged, in enso of a riot, in order that they might he rc-loadcd by another party detailed at tho head quarters, and then taken back to the Boys engaged in the fight, and exchanged for empty ones just fired off. By this means tho Boys were kept well supplied with loaded pistols, without their opponents being able to discover the secret of their success. Everything went on peaceably enough until about 5 o’clock in tho | afternoon, when word was sent to 88 White street that assistance was want-, cd in the Seventh Ward to aid in quelling a riot w hich had been raging in Jack son street. Deputy Superintendent Carpenter accordingly immediately despatched Sergeant Bonner with 123 men, who proceeded through White and Baxter streets to Bayard street, it w as generally thought by the Babbits that they were coming to arrest I them. They accordingly immediately sent word to their forces in all directions and assembled in the vicinity of Mott and Bayard streets. As the police came up the Babbits received them with an overpowering volley of stones, brickbats Ac., which put them completely to flight. The Bowery Boys hearing of the affray hastened to the scene in fall force. Seeing that the Babbits had assailed the police instead of their j own number, they immediately took sides with the police, and taking up i their position by the side of a huge I pile of brickbats in Bayard, near Mott street opposite a row of brick houses i | in course of erection, commenced a

The above id the peroration of a frothy diatribe, ostensibly in answer to a correspondent w ho lias seen prop.or to favor us with several communications, in which, lie iliseloscs a prediliction ujifivorabTe to Hie tyrannical reign of King alcohol, am! the slave power. It is certainly the most amusing specimen of locofoco desperation now extant. We have been disposed to give the Democrat credit for average fairness, and for a modicum of voracity, but if the editor acknowledges the paternity of tlio above slanderous declamation, wo shall be irresistibly compelled to modify our opii - ion of his candor, if not his honesty. Aside from the latitude that may be extended in an argument merely “uiihuniitum," the editor makes charges against the Republican party that are unfounded, he magnifies the sins of a single individual and charges them up to the whole party; because a minister of Massachusetts has been guilty of adultery, eryo, the Republican party of that state are nil adulterers, and hypocritical, dishonest, and corrupt in denouncing polygamy; because a Republican treasurer of Ohio, detected a locofoco scoundrel who had heen Ins predecessor in office, in stealing upwards of a million dollars from the public coffers, and to save him from public infamy, and the money to the state, gave him an opportunity to replace it, therefore the Republican party of Ohio as a party, are thieves; because the Republicans of the New York legislature did what the locofoco* of Missouri had previously done, the inference drawn from the premises is to Iw favorable in one instance and unfavorable in the other, and so of the long catalogue of al1 edged corruptions and frauds, existing, so far as the UepubHcan party ha* any eimplieity with them, al'jfic in thf the editor.
Should we be disposed to take up the lino of argument advanced in the above outburst of passion, we might convict the old lino party of every offense in the long and dark calendar of crime. There is no party that ever had an existence, that has so good reason to lament individual depravity, individual scoundrolism, and individual infamy, as the so called democratic party; yet we cannot, in fairness, apply these harsh epithets to the party, however a corrupt leadership may direct the united action of the party. The very sagacious editor having wriggled through a column and a half of thundering epithets, sagely comes to the conclusion that the Republican party will not survive the return of common sense. Should the aforesaid editor, (if wc arc to judge him by the above effusion) “survive the return of common sense,” we pronounce him immortal, we hove not the most distant idea that it can ever return to him, at least while he occupies his present state of mind. That the Republican parly is to die in Massachusetts, is the fiat of our far-seeing friend of the Democrat.— For the encouragement of our political friends in that state, wc suggest to them that the Democrat is only jesting, and we have a great desire to say to the editor of the Democrat, that he is attempting to use an undue influence in the election of that slate—they ought to ho permitted to settle their own affairs in their own way, subject only to the constitntion of the United States. In n’l conscience they ought nut to he discouraged with the prediction of impending dissolution—it would make them foci bad. Hut how have the elections gone so far as we have hail any sines the November election. The follow ing states answer:

Bayard Taylor.— The New York | Tribune of the 8th says that as other journals have mentioned the fact, it may not be improper for it to state that Bayard Taylor is about to bo married to Miss Maria Hanson, a daughter of the eminent German astronomer of that name. The wedding will take place at Gotha, the residence of the bride's family, in the autumn, after Mr, Taylor’s return from the North Cape. The happy couple will spend the next winter at Moscow. This event will not prevent the execution of Mr. Taylor’s plan of an exploration of Central Asia previous to bis return to this country.
little as lo deserve the hissing scorn of every Democrat in the, State however strong his prejudices to Republicanism. Madison applied fur tho office of Notary Public, because the Democratic incumbent resigned, and tho community of St. Paul, Shelby county, requested that some one should have the place. Willard would not appoint Madison, simply because he was a Republican; but up,on further inquiry, when he found there was no Democrat eligible for the office in that place, and that there was an urgent necessity for the place to be filled, lie sent Madison a Commission, who very properly replied that, if he was disqualified six weeks previously, for being a Republican, he was yet, whereupon Willard caps the climax of meanness by writing the following letter:
Then it was that a certain clique got it into their scheming pates to publish a flaming hand bill to scatter over the country, Printing Offick fur Salk, and that too without the knowledge, and directly against the consent of the sheriff. This poster, one waiter r. Johns, a kind of attache of the Democrat office, offered to publish for the sheriff in the Democrat, gratit , and insisted that he should have the privilege, which the sheriff very’ properly declined. Now although we have several days ago, settled satisfactorily with our execution friend, although it is false that our office is for sale on the 15th inst., or any other time, yet to gratify a low, private malice that is lurking in the bad blood of a dirty scoundrel, the advertisement finally makes its appearance in tho Democrat, (several days after the whole matter has been settled,) in the hope that wc shall feel humiliated.

Since the recent proceedings at Tammany Hall to harmonize the party, tho Dead Rabbits and Bowery hove been more than ever anxious to have a “muss” on a largo scale. The Bowery Boys I cing driven to the easterly aide of Elizabeth street, and seeing the utter folly of trying to stand their ground below that position, in consequence of the army of men on the housetops, hastily erected several old wagons standing opposite tho livery stable at that place into a barricade, behind which they took shelter from the stones and missiles of the enemy, and only fired when they were sure of their victims. The news soon reached the white street station house, and thirty policemen wore dispatched to assist their comrades. By this time the Babbits rained down bricks, stones, Ac., upon tho police. They also fired pistols and muskets at them; the police, however, escaped serious injury, and captured about a dozen of the rioters, who were locked up. At this juncture a frightful scene of riot and bloodshed ensued. A large number were wounded, and some mortally. A portion of the rioters barricaded Mulberry street, near Bavard, with carts, » ' » ' wagons, hose carriages, and timber, and built a similar barricade in Bayard street, near F.lizaheth. From behind those the “Dead Rabbits” and Bowery Boys were continmdy firing at each other with muskets, pistols, Ac., and two or three were killed and a large number wounded. One hundred additional policemen were sent to quell tho disturbance, and they succeeded about 7 o’clock in the evening in removing the barri-

About one o’clock on Sunday morning a party of boy* identified with (lie Dead Babbits were walking in the Bowery, in the vicinity of the Bowery Theater, wlicn they met officer Abraham Florentine, of the Sixth Ward, and another officer, whom they assaulted, ami w ho were obliged for refuge to run into the barroone. of No. 40 Bowery, the head omirtcrs of the Bowery' Hoys, or Pat Matthews’* party. The Dead Babbits followed them as far ns the floor, when the foremost of them w as knocked down by a man standing in the floor of No. 40, at which time the floor was closed. The Babbits then proceeded to throw brickbats, stones, &c., at the windows and floor of the place, breaking nearly every pane of glass in the sashes. After finding that tut y could get no satisfaction in the way of attacking the •wo officers, they fell to abusing another of the Metropolitans, who was passing at the time, who was compeled to seek refuge in the coffee and rake saloon in the basement of No. Ilti Bowery.
