It seems from rumors which were afloat on board the Napoleon, that the Montreal had been on fire previously while getting up her steam, and that precautions had been taken with a view to any such casualty as that which finally occurred; but this is at present uncertain. After the fire had been burning for a length of time there was a kind of explosion, which destroyed nearly all the upper part of the vessel that remained after the catastrophe. It appears that there was no boat on the Montreal that could be put to the slightest use in saving the passengers. Capt. Randolph and Mr. Wilson, jr., son of the owner of the Montreal,arc said to have saved themselves hy swimming to the shore. The following is the statement of the purser of the steamer Napoleon: The mate got out the jolly boat, into which he placed four ladies, cabin passengers, their maid and cabin girl. It was his intention to get the women first out, and he had given orders U that effect, but wh'-n the male immigrants saw that, they made a rush down the side and into the boat, which was instantly swamped. The mate strove to cut the hawser, so us to save those in the boat; hut the rush was so great it was impossible.

The Homestead, published at Hartford, Conn, has lately published an old document which gives the price of farm stock and negroes in that State, over one hundred years ago. All the old Thirteen States, it will he remembered, were saveholding, until since the revolution. The document in question is an inventory of the estate of Capt. Thomas Wheeler,one of the richest men of his day, his estate being valued at over $40,000. To show the great difference in the prices then and now we give the price of the slaves as found in the inventory, dated December 11, 1755;

A Tor cuing Memorial.— In its deacription of the grave stones around the old church in Jnmestown, the South Side Democrat has the following; Among the grave atones arc two, of a husband and wife, immediately cast of the arched portal of tower, between which, many score of years ago, the seed of a sycamore fell and took root. Time passed, and the germ grew up into a towering tree, and as its trunk expanded, the soft fibers of the wood wound themselves around the hard marble of the monument, clasping the tomb stories, ns it were, with two strong arms, till it embraced them both w ithin the very heart of its solid trunk. Now the tall trees stretches away, with a nodding plume of green, into the clouds, while its tough roots and protecting body shield the decaying dust and crumbling monument of two, who, united in life, in death we-e not divided.
