Nelson coach of year OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) As much as he appreciates becoming the NBA’s only three-time Coach of the Year, Don Nelson would willingly discard the distinction. “I would gladly trade all three of these awards in on one championship ring,” Nelson said Thursday after being named the NBA Coach of the Year. After shaking up their roster with a blockbuster trade on the opening weekend of the season, the Warriors recovered and finished two games behind the Pacific Division champion Portland Trail Blazers, who had the best record in the Western Conference. * Just hours before their season-opener, Golden State acquired rookie forward Billy Owens from Sacramento in exchange for guard Mitch Richmond, who had been billed during the preseason as one third of the Warriors’ Big Three, along with Chris Mullin and Tim Hardaway. “I think this award is a team award,” Nelson said. “I think it’s actually given to the team that overachieved more than any other during the season, which we did. We won far more games than I or anybody else expected. “... I think this team made more strides this year than any team I’ve ever coached. That’s why this is so special.” Nelson led the Warriors to a 55-27 record, an 11win improvement over last season and the team’s best in 16 years, and coached the Western Conference team in the All-Star game. Golden State finished the 1975-76 season with a 5923 record under coach Al Attles. “He lets us play and he makes it fun,” said Mullin, the Warriors’ leading scorer. “But there’s a whole lot of work that goes behind what you see. Nelson, whose overachieving Golden State Warriors won 55 games during the 1991-92 regular season, received 26 of a possible 96 votes from a panel of sports broadcasters and writers who made the selection. Pat Riley of the New York Knicks was second with 21 votes, followed by Phil Jackson of the Chicago Bulls with 17.

Cavs even series 1-1 CHICAGO (AP) Unlike the Chicago Bulls, the Cleveland Cavaliers were true to form. “If we play a poor game, we come back strong the next time,” Cleveland coach Lenny Wilkens said Thursday night after the Cavaliers silenced their critics and the defending champion Bulls 107-81 to even the best-of-7 playoff at one game each. “I NEVER SAT through an exhibition of basketball like that in my life,” said Bulls coach Phil Jackson, somewhat unable to fathom the devastation brought upon his team. “It was 8-2 and then 10-2 and we thought we could come back and play through it,” said Scottie Pippen. “But it never happened.” Actually, the Bulls fell behind 11-2, and that was as close as they would come all night. Led by Brad Daugherty with 28 points and Mark Price with 23, the Cavaliers, who lost the opener 103-89 Tuesday night, were ahead 20-4 before Pippen scored the Bulls first field goal with 3:46 left in the quarter. A 10-0 run to open the second quarter, with Price hitting two 3-pointers, gave the Cavaliers a 40-14 lead. At that point, Price had as many points as the Bulls. IN THE FIRST two periods, the defending NBA champion Bulls were 12 of 43 from the field, 27.9 percent, and the Cavaliers 21 of 33 for 63.6 percent. “The first half was the best half we played all year,” Price said.
