Plainfield takes GHS sectional
By STEVE HELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Doug Scamahom ran the final lap of the 1600-meter relay in under 50 seconds. He ran right out the skin on his feet. He burned flesh making up the ground. He was right there, nearly an arm’s length away from catching Plainfield’s anchor runner as the two closed on the finish line. Scamahom was at an arm’s length when the event ended, too. THE 1600-METER relay was a summary of the Tiger Cubs’ effort Thursday in the Greencastle-IH-SAA Track and Field Sectional. Plainfield got too big of a lead early for Greencastle to catch. Despite championship performances by Scamahom in the 400meter dash, Jason Gibbs in the high jump, Monye Steadmon in the long jump and the 400-meter relay team’s near-record run, Greencastle took third place with 82 points. Plainfield, also with four firsts plus a stadium record shot put of 52 feet, B'/i inches by Eric Hartman, won the sectional with 103 points. Danville, with one champion and seven seccond places, finished second with 90 points. “WE HAD SOME good performances. It’s tough to have two

Drivers don’t like new yellow-flag rule
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The U.S. Auto Club has set a 100 mph speed limit for pit road during caution periods in Sunday’s Indianapolis 500. The Indy-cars generally drive along the pit lane at speeds up to 150 mph, but the speed limit has been imposed to help keep a new caution flag rule from turning into a disaster. WHEN A YELLOW flag is displayed Sunday for an accident or some other dangerous situation on the 216-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, pit road will immediately be closed. It will remain that way until the field bunches up behind the pace car, which will slow the race cars to about 80 mph. Pit road will be opened after the packup and the drivers are expecting virtually all the cars to hit the pits at the same time. Bobby Rahal, the 1986 Indy winner, is among the numerous members of the 3 3-car starting field who have expressed concern over the situation. “I UNDERSTAND WHAT they’re trying to do,” Rahal said, “I understand they want to slow the cars down on the racetrack. I understand they want to improve the safety of the pit procedures. God knows, no driver ever wants to hit anybody. I can think of nothing worse than to hit a crew member. “I think it was well meant, but I think they missed the boat a little bit. I don’t agree with closing the pit. I do agree with a speed limit in
outstanding performances in a row and I would rather have the WCC (Meet title),” Greencastle coach Charlie Dobson said. North Putnam, led by sectional champs Roger Busch and Jeremy Butler, finished fourth with 47 points. The Cougars also got two surprising regional qualifying performances in the 400-meter relay and 1600-meter relay. Hurdlers Tim Swanson and John Furby led South Putnam to 15 points and an eighth place finish. THE FIRST FOUR places in each event, individual and relay, advance to the Lafayette Jeff Regional on May 28. They will compete with athletes from sectionals at Carmel, Lafayette Jeff and Seeger. Scamahom not only ran one of the fastest splits of his 1600-meter relay career, but also won the 400. He tied a Greencastle Stadium record of 50.8 seconds set by Wes Trout of Greencastle in 1988. The record-tying time was shocking because Scamahom ran the first leg of Greencastle’s 400relay just 10 minutes earlier. Scamahom, Anjuan Hughes, Brad Resner and Gibbs won in 44.7 seconds.
High School. Lewis and Cloverdale teammate Joe Zimmerman will return to Bloomington North May 28 to compete in the regional with hopes of going on to the state meet. Zimmerman qualified for the regional with a third place in the long jump. BLOOMINGTON NORTH won its own sectional with 12016 points. Among the West Central Conference teams in the sectional, Edgewood finished third with 82 A points, Owen Valley was fifth with 39 points, Cloverdale was seventh with 18 points and Monrovia took eighth place with 16 points. Cloverdale’s Lewis won the Bloomington Sectional championship with a vault a 13 feet. Once he had the sectional title won, Lewis had the bar raised to 13 feet, 8 inches, one inch above the Cloverdale High School record he set last Friday while winning the West Central Conference championship. “He was ahakey warming up but once he started vaulting, he did quite well,” Cloverdale coach Jim Glenn said. “He cleared 13 feet easily.” ONLY A JUNIOR, Lewis won the Terre Haute Sectional pole vault title as a freshman. That year he qualified for the IHSAA State Championship Meet with a vault of 13 feet, 6 inches. The first four places in each event, individual arid relays, advance to the regional. Zimmerman finished third in the long jump and wasn’t far out of second. He jumped 19 feet, 1114

I do agree if someone is going too fast through an accident scene or on a yellow, they should be penalized because there are people out there who think the yellow is a good way to make time on the field. “If you’re going to pit on the lap that goes yellow and then you can’t pit for two laps, if you’re out of fuel, then what? “IT TAKES A lot out of me. If I didn’t have to do that I might be a lot faster. But I’m happy doing that. It’s fun,” the senior said. Steadmon and Gibbs, who won the high jump at 6-feet-6, pulled off a one-two finish in the long jump. Steadmon jumped 20 feet, BV4 inches on his final attempt That took first place away from Gibbs, who was second at 20 feet, 6 3 /a inches. North’s Busch and Butler were not as surprising as the 400- and 1600-meter relays. Busch, who spent the final three hours of school in the nurses office ill, won the 1600 in 4:34.1 and finished second in the 3200 in 10:13.1. Butler practically blew away 800-meter run field the field with a 1:59.0 time. Greencastle’s Brad Resner took second in 2:02.4. North’s 400-meter relay team of AJ. You’ll not only have them pitting at the same time, they’ll be exiting at the same time. I’m not so sure the exit’s not more dangerous than the entrance because on the entrance everybody’s tires are pretty hot. On the exit, you’ve got pretty cold tires.”
