We get letters...
Zoning ordinance a detriment to our future
To the Editor: An open letter to the County Commissioners... I preface any remarks with: I do not hold anything against you personally. I wish only the best for you and your families. As politicians, you have created a hornets’ nest by letting someone brainwash you with hogwash. Because we are in the Midwest, a small rural community with conservative views, and up until this time, concerned about the welfare and future of our residents, we are not believers of destroying the small businessman, and the young person who wants to start small and grow bigger. The zoning proposal with its increased restraints and taxes puts a damper on any continued growth in Putnam County of those noted. You have not observed the problems, trauma and outrageous taxes in other counties, even when brought to your attention. You ignored them apparently listening to someone whispering falsehoods in your ear. After pushing for zoning for over a year, you suddenly discovered a few weeks ago that you had not informed the surrounding counties, per the law. This should have been a blatant warning to you that you do not have all the “truths” of what is to happen another instance, on your part, of not being tuned in. You had to be in a cave lhe last six months to not be aware that millions of voters all over the country are sick of politicians imposing unnecessary laws, higher taxes and killing incentive and entrepreneurship. There were hundreds of Putnam County residents who showed up at previous meetings in protest. You are
Garage-sale limits? Keep it simple, stupid
To the Editor: , Simple words and short sentences are taught in every English composition class that is worth its expense. When I was in the U.S. Army, I did a lot of writing for various offices and officers the motto in the Army was also simple: “Keep it simple, stupid.” Most people don’t care if every other person in town has 10 yard sales per year. It isn’t considered neighborly to concern yourself about the activities of your neighbor to the extent that you attempt to limit his/her personal or commercial activities. That is common courtesy. Why is it common courtesy? Courtesy is thought of by most of us as the way we conduct ourselves so that we do not infringe upon the rights of others. It is important that we not infringe upon the rights of our fellow citizens, so that we all are free to pursue happiness and prosperity. Prosperity is the acquisition of a degree of wealth, which allows us to eat when we are hungry. Here in the United States, we (most of us) have enjoyed enough prosperity that we have not been forced to steal or cheat our neighbors, friends and relatives. How did this nation achieve such overall prosperity for its citizens? If Mrs. Boone (Daniel’s wife) wished to sell her quilts and crockery, she let it be know that she had those items to sell. People came from all over to buy her quilts and crockery. Mrs. Davis asked her husband, Judge Davis, if he thought it would be all right for her (Mrs. Davis) to buy up quilts and crockery from all over Boone County, Kentucky, and then open
School board petition response ‘gratifying’
To the Editor: We would like to thank the many volunteers who helped pass a petition asking the right for the citizens of the Greencastle school district to vote on the issue of an appointive or elective school board. The carriers spent many long hours getting signatures of registered voters. Many of the carriers we do not know nor how many actually carried petitions, but we do thank them all. And we are impressed with the willingness to serve that we found in our community on this issue. Our phone did not stop ringing with volunteers asking either to sign the petition or to carry one to get signatures.
Following in Dorothy Brown’s footsteps
To the Editor: Four years ago, Dorothy Brown was appointed to the school board of the Greencastle School Corporation. We have taken great pride in the dignified and reasoned way in which Dorothy has responded to the sometimes contentious issues that have come before the board. We are aware that some people in our community were pleased to see Dorothy replaced on the board. The conscientious attention and independence of mind that have characterized her service have proved discomforting to some.
Simply it’s your right to write... Banner-Grap/u'c welcomes your views on any public issue. Letters must bear the writer’s signature and printed or typed name, full address and telephone number. can be written on virtually any topic, although not all letters on a certain subject will be published, particularly if the points made by one writer have already been addressed in a previous letter. Send your letters to: Letters to the Editor, The Ban~ Ker-Graphic, P.O. Box 509, Greencastle, Ind. 46135. Letters also may be brought to the newspaper at 100 N. Jackson St.
aware of them because you had your stooges there, and you still insist on going against the people you were elected to serve, treating them as peons in a dictatorship. You are a party in destroying the premise that this country was built on. You are dehumanizing, scorning and abusing individuality, personality and even private property. I bring to your attention once more, that the whole country is in revolt over the very actions you seek to impose. It’s time you had the backbone and intestinal fortitude, with common sense, to really take a good look at your intent to your friends and neighbors. Not only are you making enemies, you will be turning neighbor against neighbor and far what? The procedures you have been using for individualized cases that arise have been sufficient without higher taxes. Passing this zoning ordinance will cause taxes to escalate without the approval and control of the voter. This is neither democratic or an acting republic. This is what Communism started out as the control of private property and high taxation by a few people and you say you like this? By the way, have you heard what happened to Russia? If you pass this, you should all be impeached some way, somehow. Marian Nelson 1238 Castlebury Drive Greencastle
a perpetual market for those items on her’s and Judge Davis’ own property. Judge Davis was heard to remark that, “It’s free country.” In no time at all, Mrs. Davis acquired a good deal of money from visiting Mrs. Boone’s porch sale and other women’s porches and then selling what she had purchased for just a wee bit more. Everybody profited. Taxes came out of those profits and soon Boone County had a courthouse they could be proud of they could even afford to elected a county sheriff and pay his salary. It surprises me that members of the Greencastle City Council will remark to friends and strangers alike that we have too many laws that restrict the grassroots commercial activities of this country, and then declare that something needs to be done about all of the laws that exist that actually restrict the free effort required to get a business started “on a shoestring.” Yet this same Greencastle City Council sends their pack of Plan Commissioners out to intimidate the free citizens of this community by passing yet another law restricting the number of yard sales a body can have on his/her property. I dare say our own courthouse was built from the taxes of unrestricted free shoe-stringers in our county of Putnam. This country became great not because of zoning laws but entirely because of the lack of them. Larry R. Fisher 707 E. Walnut St. Greencastle
In less than two weeks, we had secured signatures of over 40 percent of the registered voters in the school district. It was surely gratifying to see the response on this issue. And in almost every instance, those who signed and those who declined were kind in their responses. The petition determining whether the Greencastle school district really wants an elective school board is but the first step on the ladder. Our goal, of course, is the top rung. Harold and Hilda Spicer Greencastle
Yet, we believe that her intelligence, independence, integrity and experience have been the greatest safeguards that our community and its children could have. It is not the mission of a school board member to be a rubber stamp. We wish the new board member, Marilynn Sturgeon, the very best, and hope that she will see herself not so much as replacing Dorothy as following in her footsteps. Executive Branch of the NAACP Barry Baynard, president Greencastle
Careless people trash parks
To the Editor: It concerns me very much of some people who are so careless and trash the parks. They should realize they are hurting the land, as well as some of the living things who mistake it as food.
Could have been a shady deal
To the Editor: Every year on Earth Day our school plants a tree. But there is one problem: People in Fillmore always come and chop them down. This year we planted another one. Thank goodness it’s still stand-
More city stoplights needed
To the Editor: I think that there are not enough stoplights in Greencastle. Every time you come out of a parking lot in Greencastle, it could take up to 10 minutes. If there were more stoplights, it would be different
Concerned people should get together and clean the areas litterburgs have polluted. The scenery would soon become beautiful again if they did. Jamie Ramsey South Putnam G/T Class
ing. Maybe we can build a fence around it to keep people out If they wouldn’t have messed with the first one, we would have shade by now. Carrie Price South Putnam G/T Class
I am thankful for the ones you already have, but like I said, there should be more. Could everyone please write a letter to the mayor so he can help us with this problem? Stephanie Brown South Putnam G/T Class
