Supports ‘courage, foresight’ of zoning plan
To the Editor: The issue of zoning has ignited much controversy and emotional debate. I support our Plan Commission and Putnam County Commissioners, in their attempt * to prevent further deterioration of our county. In the past 10 years Putnam County has become scattered with haphazard development I believe this has reduced the quality of living and the property values in many areas. With zoning, we would have the opportunity to regulate this development. Without zoning, I am very concerned about the “natural progression of growth” that will transpire.
Wanting to be left alone by visionary groups
To the Editor: The commissioners of Putnam County are receiving a well-deserved lesson in the art of futility. They have met the opposition in the form of city vs. county. They are receiving some of the same logic and etc. that has been handed to citizens opposed to zoning. This frustration is the lot of the majority of people vs. zoning. Of the five people who took up petitions again, there were six persons who did not sign. This was from a total of approximately 500. How do they arrive at the quotes that the county is split 50-50? From zoning we have progressed to some groups
Positives of zoning outweigh the negatives
To the Editor: Zoning laws, who need them? We do, that’s who! I believe when you look at the big picture, the positives far outweigh the negatives. Some day in the not-so-distant future, whether we like it or not, the businesses and population growth that is now east of us will eventually make its way here. And in preparation for that a few good rules must be laid. These rules, I believe, are being overly exaggerated by the opposition namely the organizer of this group, the Hasslers, who themselves may be limited in the future expansion of their own business as a dump truck service which is located around residential housing in the county. A trucking service such as theirs is a nice and convenient business to have in the county, but there probably are not too many people who would desire this fleet of trucks next to their house or rolling through their streets. The way it is explained to me, whether you’re in
What about ‘those employees necessary?’
To the Editor: Section 6 Plan Commission (1037 L-60 A. Plan Commission (1037 L-61 organization: “The commission shall elect from its members, a - president and a vice president. The commission may appoint and fix the duties and compensation of a secretary and those employees necessary for the discharge of its duties, all in conformity to and compliance with the salaries and compensations fixed by the county commissioners and state law.” Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) 1037 L-62 organization: “At the first meeting of each year the board shall elect a chairperson and a vice chairperson from among its members. The board may appoint and fix the com- • pcnsation of a secretary and those employees necessary for the discharge of its duties, all in conformity to and compliance with salaries and compensations fixed by the County Council and state law.” The question has been asked what dollars and cents came to in the above toward operating the two above. The answer received was: “Where did you hear that ; from?” The answer, of course, was from their Zoning Ordinance. They requested the page numbers, which I did not have at that time. They may now refer to the above. We would still appreciate an honest answer in
Appalled Ms. Crawley not picked for principal
To the Editor: They finally did it! Over the edge into the unbelievable. I’m referring to the recent Greencastle School Board (less than one minute) decision of not selecting Ms. Dorothy Crawley as the middle school principal. I was absolutely appalled that she was not selected for the position. Her experience, demeanor and proses- " sionalism is beyond reproach. In 20 years experience in human resources, the major criteria that a good organization considers in the selection process are: Education. Job knowledge. Communication skills. Creativity. Motivation. Composure. Ms. Crawley, in this writer’s opinion, more than meets these requirements.
More than bricks and mortar to education
To the Editor: - On May 6,1 attended a meeting about the building of the new North Putnam Middle School. I heard about the percentage of interest to be charged on the bond issue, the cost per square foot, the anticipated property tax rate increase, the need for a special room to meet in to help pupils with problems, etc. Not once did I hear from the administrators or educators about what we as taxpayers could expect as a return on our investment. I heard no comments about the anticipated increase in SAT scores, the decrease in drop-out or how much pupil performance would increase. I did hear that it was necessary to pave the track for field events because no one would come to the events since the track is cinder. I also heard that a new gym is

I see zoning as a way to protect and preserve our individual rights as property owners as well as prevent further deterioration of our county. Although I do not agree with every aspect of the proposed zoning ordinance, I support the courage and foresight of our Plan Commission and commissioners in attempting to resolve such a controversial issue. I would also like to urge others who are concerned about the development of Putnam County to let their opinions be known. Marla Helton Route 1, Greencastle
that have visions. Know what? We, who own property, have our own visions as to what we want them to be. We have never thought to make a scenic tour for buses and etc. We do not want or need the thinking of others to protect us and this county. We firmly believe that most of us want to be left alone by the political and visionary groups whereby we can worry about something of a more frightful nature. It is not necessary to hire people from Marion County and import others to vision our destiny. J.M. Eiteljorge Route 4, Greencastle
agriculture of just a homeowner, you may or may not need a permit or have to follow certain guidelines in the building or placement of certain structures. I’m assured that these structures can and will be built in the future just as they are now in the surrounding counties who have had zoning laws for years. Putnam County is still very much undeveloped in both business and residential use and the so-called entrepreneurs of this state know that and at present can come in and set up shop without any regard for the land or the people of Putnam County. I live, recreate and work in this county and believe there is a place for all this activity which can benefit all from the average citizen to the businessman. After all, when it comes right down to the issue at hand, the zoning laws will be no different than the other laws we now have: Only those people who choose to abuse these laws will be adversely affected. terms of dollars and cents to the taxpaying people of this county. Mr. Hyten (county planner Kim) did acknowledge that he had already requested an additional $37,000 to implement the zoning. Another question that had received no answer: In the meeting at North Putnam School, it was requested that we be allowed to vote for or against zoning. It was stated it would cost $35,000 and would be too expensive. At another meeting at the fairgrounds it was again asked and we were told it was not allowed by the state. At that time the question was asked why. No answer ignored. In checking, we found that there is an inexpensive way for the people to let it be known which they prefer. I do not believe the people who are so intent have any intention of hearing from the majority of people because they quite well know it would be a loss to their cause. It is a little scary when it is stated “employees necessary.” The questions remain: How many? How much? We would like this presented to the people and inclusive of any and all benefits cars and so forth. M. R. Miller Route 6, Greencastle
It also appears that her past years of experience in our school system as a teacher and administrator were not even considered. Again, in a good organization, the internal candidate would definitely have the first opportunity for the opening, qualifications of the candidates being relatively equal. I seriously doubt any major differences in the required qualifications of the candidates for this position. The action taken by the school board could, at the minimum, make the atmosphere in the middle school tense. Knowing Ms. Crawley as a true professional, this will not happen. I am dejected for Ms. Crawley for the skill, care and effort that she has put forth in our school system and not being given the chance for advancement. How would each one of us feel if, with your present employer, you had the qualifications and experience for an advancement opportunity and were not given the chance. David C. Heavin 724 Toddson Drive
needed so more students would be able to participate in athletic events. I am in favor of excellence in education and realize adequate facilities are necessary to accomplish their goal, but I believe the taxpayers should receive some assurance that the money spent to provide the new facilities will produce better-educated children, capable or succeeding in a world after North Put. Educator, not brick and mortar, are responsible for education. A. Wayne Hamblen Route 1, Greencastle P.S. as taxpayers, need a commitment from administrators and teachers.
