SAMMY SOSA From Chisox to Cubs
Trade gives Bell, Sosa change of Chicago address CHICAGO (AP) Outfielders George Bell and Sammy Sosa, who hail from the same Dominican town, have switched Chicago baseball addresses. Bell, a slugging three-time All-Star, was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the White Sox for Sosa and left-handed reliever Ken Patterson. “This is an unusual trade because I’m in the middle of it,” said Cubs general manager Larry Himes, whose first trade was with his old club, the White Sox. Himes obtained both Patterson and Sosa in trades while working as the White Sox’ GM. THE WHITE SOX, who also got some cash in the deal, have been looking for someone to fill the fifth spot in their batting order behind Frank Thomas since Bo Jackson left camp a few weeks ago to undergo hip replacement surgery later this year. “He’s just what we needed in a No. 5 hitter. We hated to lose Sammy and we hated to lose Ken Patterson, but we think we’re a better team,” White Sox manager Gene Lamont said. White Sox GM Ron Schueler said he thought Bell and Tim Raines possibly will divide their time between being the designed hitter and left field. Bell’s 10 errors topped all major league outfielders last year. “WE GOT THE GUY we wanted. We got the pure hitter,” said Schueler, who replaced Himes as White Sox GM in 1990. “Obviously, we felt we need one more bat, a guy who can drive in runs to protect Thomas. ” Bell, a nine-year veteran who won the 1987 American League MVP, spent seven turbulent years with the Toronto Blue Jays before signing as a free agent with the Cubs in December 1990 for a guaranteed $9.8 million over three years. The 32-year-old outfielder hit .285 with 25 home runs and 86 RBIs for the Cubs last year. “What we’re giving up is an outstanding hitter,” Himes said. “George will always be a good hitter, and he’s going to fit in very well in the White Sox lineup.” BELL, WHO GOT two hits in his final Cub game on Monday, will report to the White Sox’ Sarasota, Fla., camp on Thursday, said Schueler. “I just think he just another piece that makes us a real good ballclub,” said Schueler. Bell’s addition bolsters the White Sox’ chances for first in the AL West after the club finished second in the division the past two years. “I don’t know the White Sox very well, but I know they played pretty good last year,” Bell said. Sosa, 23, batted .203 with 10 homers and 33 RBIs in 116 games with the White Sox. He was sent to Triple-A Vancouver for a little over a month last season. He adds speed and defense to the Cubs’ outfield. SOSA, WHO LIKE Bell is from San Pedro de Marcoris in the Dominican Republic, said he was pleased with the trade. “I’m going to go over there and play every day,” Sosa said. “That’s what I need, to go over there and do what I know I can do.” Sosa is expected to take over Bell’s left-field job and No. 5 spot in the Cubs’ lineup. Patterson was 3-0 with a 2.83 ERA and one save in 43 games for the White Sox last season. He appeared in 145 games in three years with the team. Schueler said Wilson Alvarez probably will inherit Patterson’s spot as the left-handed middle reliever. Himes said Patterson would bolster the Cubs’ bullpen, hard hit last season when the Cubs finished in a tie for third in the NLEast. HE CALLED SOSA “an outstanding defensive ballplayer, who will add speed to our ball club. We were the worst team in allowing doubles last year, and with Sammy that’s going to change.” $545,000 settlement for Gathers’ mother LOS ANGELES (AP) Loyola Marymount University will pay the mother of Hank Gathers $545,000 in a settlement that ends legal action against the school by the family of the late basketball star. In the settlement with Lucille Gathers announced on Monday, Loyola, athletic director Brian Quinn and former trainer Chip Schaefer were dismissed of any responsibility in Gathers’ death two years ago. THE SETTLEMENT ALSO signaled an end to the wrongful death portion of the suit that had contended that Gathers had not been properly taken care of by the school or doctors who treated him for his heart disorder prior to his death. Still to be decided, however, is a part of the suit that alleges negligence by those who treated Gathers on the court at Gersten Pavilion after he collapsed during a Loyola game on March 4, 1990. Gathers died later that evening of cardiomyopathy. That portion of the suit is still scheduled to go to trial on April 27. Loyola earlier had paid $855,000 in a settlement with Aaron Crump, Gathers’ 8-year-old son, in a suit filed by Gathers’ estate, with his son as the sole beneficiary. DR, VERNON HATTORI, a cardiologist who treated Gathers, paid $650,000 to Crump and $350,000 to Lucille Gathers. Paul Westhead, Loyola’s coach while Gathers was there, earlier was dismissed from both suits. He paid nothing. Also dismissed from the suit was Dr. Michael Mellman, the internist who treated Gathers and cleared him to play basketball. Three other doctors named in the suit Ralph Gambardella, Clarence Shields and Charles Swerdlow were dismissed from the suit and also paid nothing.
