No.l Anderson fighting history

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) History isn’t on Anderson’s side. The Indians have won the state basketball tourney three times, but none of those were as the state’s No. 1-ranked team. They’ve also been ranked No. 1 five times but have never won the tourney from that spot Maybe they’re due. ANDERSON LAST WENT into the tourney ranked No. 1 in 1974, a year before Norm Held became coach. Held has taken the Indians to state runner-up finishes four times since 1979, and on Monday, his team was voted best in the state in the final Associated Press poll of the season. It was almost unanimous. Of the 20 voters this week, 17 gave Anderson the nod for No. 1. The other three picked the Indians second, giving them a total of 397 rating points out of a possible 400. The only other first-place votes from the AP statewide board of sports writers and broadcasters went to Vincennes, which had two votes for No. 1 and rose one spot to eighth this week, and Richmond, which had one first-place vote and remained 12th. WARSAW AGAIN WAS picked second with 355 rating points; New Albany remained third with 343 points; and Lafayette Jeff rose three spots to fourth with 298 points after finishing with a victory over Mc-

Resner, Lucas South All-Stars

By STEVE HELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Brad Resner and Dale Lucas, the Putnam County high school football players of the year, will be teammates for a week this summer, as they have been selected to play for the South All-Stars in the annual Indiana North-South High School Football All-Star Game. The contest will be played at North Central High School this year. More information will be announced as the game approaches. GREENCASTLE’S RESNER and North Putnam’s Lucas were among the 33 South All-Stars selected in a meeting of the South AllStar coaching staff and region representatives. John Fallis, who has led Greencastle to a 79-46 record, three West Central Central Conference championships, two sectional titles and one regional tile will be one of six assistants on the South staff. Dick Dullaghan, coach of Class 5A state champion Ben Davis, will be the head coach and other assistants will be Dick Harpold of Indianapolis Howe, Paul Loggan of Indianapolis North Central, Russ Radtke of Connersville, Paul Osborne of Tecumseh and Joe Goodman of Seymour. Bob Bridge of North Miami High School will be the North AllStar head coach. RESNER AND LUCAS join a squad that includes such name players as Evansville Mater Dei quarterback Eric Goebel, Ben Davis quarterback Chris Ings, Indianapolis Ritter running back Shane Thomas and Seymour running back Michael Batts. Resner was assured a position on the South squad as MVP of this region. The 5-foot-10 senior finished his high school football career as Greencastle’s all-time leading scorer with 286 points, alltime leading passer with 3,347 yards and fifth leading rusher with 1,865 yards. However, he will probably play defensive back in the all-star game, since the South squad includes Ben Davis’ Ings and Mater Dei’ Goebel. ‘*THEY’VE GONE BACK and forth several times (between quarterback and defensive),” coach Fallis said. “They’ve told him to be ready to go either way.” Resner and Ings can play either offense or defense for the South. “The problem is Goebel doesn’t play anyplace else,” Fallis said. On defense, Resner made 28 inital tackles, 14 assists and intercepted one pass for the 12-1 Tiger Cubs this season. “The main thing he can do is play cornerback where he can come up and make tackles,” Fallis said. “I don’t know how his speed

Cutcheon. Anderson Highland, fourth last week after spending much of the season atop the poll, dropped another five spots to ninth after an overtime loss to Mount Vernon (Hancock). Mount Vernon climbed three spots to 17th with the victory over Highland, while McCutcheon dropped one spot to 20th with the loss to Lafayette Jeff. Merrillville, which was tied with Mount Vemon for 20th last week, rose one spot to 19th. Lake Central, 18th a week ago, dropped out of the Top 20 with a loss to unranked Portage. would match up with some of the (all-state) fliers, but he can come up and play the short zones and make tackles.” THERE IS NO doubt Lucas can make tackles. The 6-foot-2, 245pound senior defensive tackle made 74 tackles for 7-2 Cougars. He also recovered three fumbles amd made seven quarterback sacks, despite being double and triple teamed. “He’s really pumped up,” a happy North Putnam coach Herb King said. Lucas is the first North Putnam player selected to the North-South Game since the early 1980 s. “Usually each school has a chance to get someone on the team if they have a good season and have good athletes. We were fortunate to have two players make the All-Region Team, Lucas and Kevin Mendenhall,” coach King said. GREENCASTLE MAY yet have another player on the team. Linebacker Matt Amis could be considered an alternate at the linebacker position. Amis was the only other Putnam County player among the final eight in die selection process. “He didn’t have the size and speed of some of the other players,” Fallis said. • “The reason they looked at him so close was because we’re going to play a 4-3 (defense) and he’s the only one that has played that mid-
