People in the news Mo’ better lectures, Spike? CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) Filmmaker Spike Lee. says teaching at Harvard is no big deal, but hundreds of students apparently thought otherwise and stood in line for a chance to hear him talk. “To be honest, I’m not really fazed here at Harvard,” the director told reporters later. “I think it’s an honor just for me to teach young students in film.” Lee, whose films include “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Do The Right Thing” and “Jungle Fever,” was invited by the African-American Studies Department to lecture on black film this semester. Students waited in line for more than an hour Friday before packing the 1,200-seat Sanders Theater to listen to Lee, and Harvard officials said 600 people were turned away. NEW ORLEANS (AP) Renowned French chef Julia Child says parsley and chopped eggs can cover a multitude of cooking errors, so there’s no reason for cooks to be shy. “Many people today not only don’t know how to cook, they’re deathly afraid to try,” said the woman who helped introduce America to French cooking with her television series “The French Chef.” “But I say, ‘Just try.’ If you make an omelet and you’ve messed it up, don’t apologize. Just put a lot of parsley on it and serve it up. Just remember, parsley and chopped eggs have covered lots of things.” Child was in New Orleans this week for the International Conference on Gastronomy. It was very ; similar to one written in 1904 by my •grandmother, Bessie Anderson Z Stanley. Z I have seen other definitions of •success on cards taken from Grandmother’s work. Hallmark Cards erroneously credited Robert Louis Stevenson as the author! (They later corrected their error.) I would appreciate a correction from you, please. My family has enjoyed your column for years, and looks forward to hearing from you. ARTHUR STANLEY HARVEY, RICHMOND, KY. DEAR MR. HARVEY: My .apologies to your family. According to “Distilled Wisdom: An Encyclopedia of Wisdom in Condensed Form” by Alfred Armand Montapert, published by Prentice-Hall Inc., Bessie Anderson Stanley wrote the famous definition of success that was published in 1904 in Brown Book Magazine. And here it is: “He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men and the love of

IRVING, Texas (AP) Country singer Willie Nelson will team up again with rock stars Neil Young and John Mellencamp for another Farm Aid concert. The three musicians, who started the periodic concerts in 1985 to help financially troubled farm families, will perform in Texas Stadium in Irving, just outside of Dallas, said Farm Aid spokeswoman Beth Sanderson. They hope to announce a date for the concert at a news conference on Monday, Farm Aid officials said. Previous Farm Aid concerts took place in 1985, ’B6, ’B7 and ’9O. ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) Pop singer Gloria Estefan has donated SI,OOO to the volunteer firefighters who rescued her from a tour bus accident in Pennsylvania in which she suffered a broken back. “Volunteerism is a very solid cause that she believes in,” James Dahnert of the Monroe County Firefighters Association was quoted ir. Friday’s editions of The Morning Call of Allentown. The now-recovered lead singer of the Latin pop group Miami Sound Machine was injured in March 1990 when her tour bus was rear-ended on a snowy highway. CONWAY, S.C. (AP) A jury ruled against a woman who sued country music guitarist Jeff Cook, claiming that they had an affair and that he harassed her when she broke up with him. “This was a frivolous suit that should have never come to court,” Cook, of the group Alabama, said Thursday. Diane Barnhill said they had an affair in the early 1980 s. She claimed that Cook’s calls caused her high blood pressure and ruined her family life. She sought unspecified damages. Cook, 42, denied having an affair and described Ms. Barnhill as an obsessive fan.

little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it, whether an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction.” * * * DEAR ABBY: My husband and I were married for 27 years when he decided he wanted out. Like all married couples, we had our ups and downs. After a lot of professional help and nine months of a rollercoaster life, I insisted that we go ahead with the divorce. It was hard for me because I still loved him. For the first three months after the divorce, we had no contact. Then, on Father’s Day, 1990, we started “dating.” By Christmas, we knew we should be back together. I am happy to say that in March of 1991 we were remarried, which brings me to my question:

Should we start counting our anniversaries from the beginning of our second marriage, or should we celebrate our original anniversary date and keep going? Depending upon which way we count it, 1992 could mark our 29th anniversary. SECOND-TIME SWEETHEARTS, SNOHOMISH, WASH. DEAR SWEETHEARTS: Make your next anniversary your 29th, and keep going. Consider your divorce a “learning experience.” Obviously, you belong together. * * * DEAR ABBY: About two weeks ago, my high school sweetheart asked me to marry him. I gladly accepted. There is one problem, however. I am 25 years old and last year I had my tubes tied because I wanted to be a successful veterinarian instead of a housewife and mom. I’m afraid to tell this to my fiance in case he might want to call off the wedding, but I’m afraid if I don’t tell him, he will think I was being unfair to him. Should I wait and tell him later? I don’t want to lose him. A WANNABE WIFE DEAR WANNABE: Tell him now. Also, speak to your doctor about reversing the procedure when and if you decide you want to have a family. Not all tubal ligations can be reversed. Your doctor will know whether yours can. Good luck.
