Ohio St. survives mini rally CHAMPAIGN, 111. (AP) Ohio State came out the winner, but nearly blowing a 14-point lead made the victory just barely satisfying. It was as though coach Randy Ayers could see it coming. “WE NEED TO concentrate on defense and rebounding,” he said before Thursday night’s 74-72 victory over Illinois. “We’ve really broken down in those two areas, particularly when we’ve been on the road.” The No. 10 Buckeyes outrebounded the Illini 33-28, but their inability to control Illinois after charging to a 49-31 halftime lead had Ayers on edge. He said he saw the same problem in Ohio Stale’s loss Sunday to Seton Hall. “In the past when we needed a big defensive stop, it seemed like we were able to get one,” he said. “But this year, even in the Minnesota and lowa games that we won, I didn’t feel we were able to do that.” IN THE FIRST half, the Buckeyes’ fullcourt press harried Illinois into 12 turnovers. Ohio Slate had seven steals in the period. But things changed in the second half and if the Illini hadn’t put on a feeble performance from the free throw line, they easily could have won. Illinois hit only 16 of 31 free throws, but Illini coach Lou Henson was encouraged by the team’s gutsy comeback. “You’re not going to beat many teams when you shoot 51 percent from the free throw line,” Henson said. But, he said, “I’m really proud of the players because they played hard and came back. OHIO ST. 74, ILLINOIS 72 OHIO ST. Hawkins, Lanier voted to Hall of Fame

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) Connie Hawkins and Bob Lanier have been elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame along with seven others, including the first two women players to be honored. Hawkins is the New York playground legend whose pro career was delayed by allegations that he had been involved with gamblers. Delta State great Lusia Harris and AAU star Nera White became the first women players elected. THREE WOMEN coaches and contributors were inducted previously, including Margaret Wade, Harris’ coach at Delta State. Elected as coaches this time were Lou Camesecca of St. John’s; former Marquette Coach Al McGuire; Jack Ramsay, whose 864 career victories with four NBA teams ranks second in league his-

Bulls lose second straight

HOUSTON (AP) Five days wasn’t long enough for Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets to forget the humiliation of a loss to the Chicago Bulls. After a 114-100 setback at Chicago on Saturday, the Rockets returned the favor Thursday night with a 105-102 victory. Olajuwon had 24 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots, including a last-second rejection of Michael Jordan that preserved the victory. “I’M GLAD THEY didn’t beat us twice,” Olajuwon said. “This was an exciting game, but the difference is they play like this all the time. You have to be up for this game, playing the world champions and Michael Jordan.” The Rockets proved to themselves in the first half that they could beat Chicago, surging to a 14-point lead. “When we play smart against a great team, it’s a good sign,” Houston coach Don Chaney said. “When we get this kind of effort and intelligent play, it’s a sign we’re making strides.” THE LOSS WAS the second

tory, and the late Phil Woolpert, who led San Francisco to the NCAA championship in 1955 and 1956. Also elected as a player was Sergei Belov, who sank the controversial basket that gave the Soviet Union the gold medal, in the 1972 Munich Olympics. THE NINE WILL be installed May 11 in this city where the game began a century ago to join 179 individuals and four teams already in the Hall. Nominees needed 18 votes from the 24-member Honors Committee for election. The two women and Belov were nominated by special committee’s set up to recognize the women’s and the international game. straight in Texas for the Bulls after a 37-5 start, and also was their fourth consecutive defeat at the Summit. The explosive beginning had prompted talk that Chicago could become the first team to win 70 games. “We haven’t accomplished anything yet this year,” Michael Jordan said. “We realized we’ve played good basketball, but we need more maturity to pick up the momentum again.” In the only other NBA games, the Los Angeles Lakers defeated Denver 106-96 and Cleveland routed Orlando 115-98. Chaney also was pleased with the mature play of guard Vemon Maxwell, who scored 23 points after being suspended by the NBA for one game following an incident in Saturday’s emotionally charged game at Chicago. “VERNON NEEDS TO go to the basket and play with the poise he showed tonight,” Chaney said. “Vemon and our guys were looking forward to this because they got kicked around in Chicago.” Maxwell also did a credible job

seven years after being accused of introducing players to a man convicted of fixing games. Hawkins said the accusations were untrue, and the NBA lifted the ban in 1969 after settling his damage suit for more than $1 million. MEANTIME, HAWKINS toured with the Harlem Globetrotters and grabbed most valuable player honors in the rival American Basketball Association’s inaugural season after leading Pittsburgh to the ABA title. He joined the Phoenix Suns as a 25-year-old rookie in a coin toss that sent Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Milwaukee. During his seven years in the league, Hawkins played in four NBA All-Star games. Jordan,” Chaney said. “Hakeem did a great job of backing up on defense and we kept them outside, limiting them to one shot.” “ANY TEAM IS going to have a letdown,” Jordan said. “And it’s more likely to happen because the other teams are always up for us. They had great defensive pressure and that had something to do with my shooting being out of rhythm. Their defense just compounded our mistakes and we didn’t react to the situation properly.” Chicago coach Phil Jackson was disgusted with his team’s first twogame slide since the first week of the season. “Our defense was embarrassing, giving them 65 points at halftime,” Jackson said. “I guess they were embarrassed in our backyard on Saturday and played much better.
