Last-second shot lifts Butler to upset victory
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Henry Williams would have traded all the awards he received for one more basket The senior guard for North Carolina-Charlotte had his homecoming spoiled when Tim Bowen hit a running 22-footer at the buzzer Monday night to lift Butler over the No. 17 49ers 87-84. MONDAY WAS proclaimed Henry Williams Day in his hometown. The former prep star at Indianapolis Ben Davis also received a key to the city from Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith and a proclamation from Gov, Evan Bayh honoring for his work in drug education. “There were a lot of distractions for me,” Williams admitted. “It was fun to get home, but our object was to win a game.” Once the game began, he thrilled his fans with a 28-point effort that moved him into second place on the UNCC scoring list with 2,033 points, passing Chad Kin ch’s 2,020 (1977-80). Williams hit a schoolrecord eight 3-point shots in 14 tries and singlehandedly kept the cold-shooting 49ers (13-3) in the game in the first half. BUT HE WAS overshadowed by Butler’s Darin Archbold, the 6-5 swingman who scored a game-high 32 points and added a career-best seven assists. Archbold said all the fuss over Williams may have fired up the Bulldogs (14-5), who hadn’t beaten a ranked team in four years. “It helps, but he’s from Indianapolis and he deserves all he’s getting,” Archbold said. “He’s a great player, and he’s done it all four years there.” After trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half and 12 at intermission, UNCC quickly made a

game of it, outscoring Butler 10-2 less than three minutes into the second half. AFTER JAMES TERRELL, who had 16 points, gave the 49ers a brief lead at 53-52 with a baseline drive at the 12:19 mark, the two teams were never separated by more than four points again. “The tremendous range that Williams has kept bringing them back, bringing them back,” said Butler coach Barry Collier. “And they had some other kids make shots. It wasn’t as easy as defending one guy. And that would have been darn near impossible.” UNCC meanwhile had defensive problems of its own, sending Butler to the foul line 30 times. The Bulldogs made 23, while UNCC was just 3-of-5. M I DIDN’T LIKE the inequity,” said UNCC coach Jeff Mullins, who found fault with touch fouls whistled by the Big Ten officials. “You can’t tell me in the Big Ten ... Indiana touches, don’t they? Purdue touches.”
