Tiger Cubs get their revenge

By STEVE HELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor It may have been the longest nine days of the Greencastle High School girls basketball season. After losing to Terre Haute South’s Braves on Jan. 18 in the title game of the Greencastle Invitational, Monday night’s rematch couldn’t have arrived quick enough for the Tiger Cubs. And from beginning to end, the Tiger Cubs played their best team basketball of the season in a convincing 64-49 victory over the Braves. LAURA LEDBETTER scored 23 points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots. Amber Asher scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds. Jamie Sibbitt scored seven points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and the backcourt of Karen Emberton and Tina Regnier cut up the Braves’ half-court trap defense. But Jill Clodfelter was the biggest difference for Greencastle. With Ledbetter in foul trouble, the 5-foot-ll sophomore came off the bench to score a varsity-career high 13 points and grab six rebounds. “Jill is very relaxed coming off the bench,” Greencastle coach

Sharks’ times steady The Greencastle Tiger Sharks defeated North Montgomery 10580 Monday night in a high school swimming meet at McAnally Center. Bouncing back from a 128-58 loss at Bloomington North last Thursday, the Sharks won seven events and got season bests from Brandt Modlin, Chris Hutchens, Justin Krider and Matt Heflin. “OUR TIMES ARE becoming more consistent,” coach Brad Hayes noted. “We’re going to hit practices pretty hard the next week or so and then had into our taper for sectionals (Feb. 13 and 15 at DePauw’s Lilly Natatorium). “I think keeping a positive mental attitude is going to be the key to good performances for the rest of the season. We’ll have to keep encouraging each other to keep high spirits. The team concept is so important at this time of year,” Hayes added. Modlin’s season best time of 1:00.65 in the 100-backstroke produced a Greencastle victory. He also won the 100-butterfly in 57.68. Modlin turned in a season best 100butterfly time of 56.35 seconds against Bloomington North. MARK HIEMENZ WAS also a double-event winner, taking the 200-IM in 2:21.86 and the 500freestyle in 5:54.07. Cascade hits free throws to defeat North Putnam

By MIKE BECK Banner-Graphic Sports Writer CLAYTON The North Putnam Cougars were outscored 13-3 at the free throw line by the Cascade Cadets Saturday night and lost the West Central Conference contest by the same margin, 45-35. The loss dropped North to 3-11 overall and 1-5 in the conference. The Cougars play a make-up game at Cloverdale on Wednesday and travel to Owen Valley Thursday for the regular-season finale. “THEY PRESSED AND we did not do a good job of getting the ball up court,” North Putnam coach Jim Stewart said. “In games we play badly we see and react too slowly at both ends of the court. “Our size was an asset in this game but because of their (Cascade) quickness, we couldn’t put all the big girls in at one time. Karyn Bell really hurt us inside. “We’ve got three games left

Eagles rally, but fall short

The South Putnam Eagles rallied from a slow start, but came up short, 55-44, to the Riverton Parke Panthers in a rare Saturday afternoon high school girls basketball game. The contest was much closer than the final score. The Eagles were within six points of the 11-4 Panthers with a minute to play, but had to foul. Riverton Parke hit its free throws down the stretch and a layup at the buzzer to set the 11point margin. “Except for a poor start and the transition (defense), that was one of our better efforts. I was really pleased other than the start,” South

The Cubs took a 17-9 lead into the second quarter, but the Braves closed the gap to 18-15 when sixfoot forward Susan Storm hit two buckets. Greencastle responded to the charge with buckets by Asher and Ledbetter and a free throws by Sibbitt for a 23-15 lead. LEDBETTER PICKED UP her third foul with 3:10 to play in the first half and the Cubs leading 2619. With Ledbetter on the bench, the Tiger Cubs still increased the lead from seven to 34-21, as Asher scored two baskets, Clodfelter put up a hook and Tina Regnier banked one through the hoop. The Cubs pushed their lead to 16 points in the first 1:30 of the second half and led 44-34 going into the fourth quarter. Terre Haute South turned to to the half-court trap that was so effective in the invitational and Greencastle passed the ball right through it for layups. A STEAL BY Asher started a fastbreak and Emberton passed to Ledbetter for the bucket gave Greencastle a 60-39 lead with 2:49 to play. Greencastle’s junior varsity is 12-2 after a 34-30 overtime loss to Terre Haute South.

before the sectional (al Cloverdale Feb. 5-8). We’re kind of looking forward to that because anything can happen in the sectional, although Greencastle has to be pretty much the favorite," Stewart said. THE TWO TEAMS played even in the first quarter, but in period two Cascade’s quickness led to five more shots (14-9) and a 6-2 advantage ian free throws, as the Cadets slipped out to a 25-17 lead. The biggest possession difference was the result of 11 North turnovers versus six for Cascade. Bell dropped in eight of her 20 in the second quarter. The third period was more of the same. The Cadets again had more opportunities to score (14-11 on field goals and 6-0 on free throws). The margin on the scoreboard had grown to 36-23 by the end of the period. North played more aggressive defense and hit backboards in the final stanza to outscore Cascade

coach Alan Rains said. South committed seven unforced turnovers and fell behind 17-2 in the first four minutes of the contest. “They were scoring on turnovers and transition (baskets),” Rains said. From there on, the Eagles were coming back. After trailing 23-4 at the end of the first quarter, South cut the margin to 34-20 at halftime and had it down to 42-30 going into the final eight minutes. “The kids made a heck of a comeback,” Rains said. Hollie Duhamell and Emily Hunteman led South with 10 points each. South Putnam also won the JV
