People in the news No ‘Colombo’ mystery here LOS ANGELES (AP) Falk’s daughter is suing her father, claiming he cut off money for her Syracuse University education to get her to come home for family counseling. Catherine Falk, 21, contends in her lawsuit filed on Monday that her father is required to pay for her education under terms of her parents’ 1976 divorce settlement The actor’s attorney, Jerome Goldberg, refused to comment. Ms. Falk’s lawyer, Marvin Mitchelson, said the woman’s father and her mother, Alyce, went to New York this month and asked her to drop ouL “The only thing I could figure out is they want her to get closer to home and get involved in family counseling,” the lawyer said. Mitchelson would not say why the actor wants Ms. Falk in counseling. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Walter Matthau says there’s something about his manner that makes him believable as a lawyer. Matthau has played lawyers more than a dozen times, including his 1966 Academy Award-winning performance in “The Fortune Cookie.” “I guess I look and sound like a lawyer,” he says. “Maybe I look like I’m lying. I’ve certainly played a lot of them.” Matthau also played lawyers in “First Monday in October,” on the stage in “On a Bright Day” and in an estimated dozen television shows. “One day my mother asked me what I was getting for a picture,” he recalls. “I said $2 million plus 10 percent of the gross. She looked me right in the eye and said, ‘lf you’d had a decent father you could have been a lawyer.’ The idea of me being in a respected profession meant more to her than the money.” Matthau also plays what he calls “a 90-second role” as former Sen. Russell Long of Louisiana in “JFK.” He says plans to unite him with Lemmon in a sequel to “The Odd Couple” are now in limbo. “I’ve heard a lot of conflicting reports about it,” he says. “There seems to be some difference of opinion concerning a lot of aspects. Is it dead? It’s as open as the Israel-Arab peace talks.” • NEW YORK (AP) Former “Today” co-anchor Jane Pauley Tuesday begins a four-day stint on her old show, subbing for the vacationing Byrant Gumbel. Pauley, who also was present for the show’s 40th anniversary bash earlier this month, was on the show for 13 years but left “Today” in December 1989 in what became the Deborah Norville debacle. She now is preparing for the March start of her second try at a weekly magazine series.

Brooks’ 26-year-old wife was treated at a hospital and released the same day. The nature of her illness was not disclosed. “UNFORGETTABLE,” Natalie Cole’s tribute to the music of her father, Nat King Cole, was named favorite adult contemporary album. Miss Cole also won favorite adult contemporary artist, besting Paula Abdul and 11-time winner Whitney Houston. “I don’t know how many times Whitney and I have been in the same category, but I’m going to enjoy this one,” Miss Cole said. Pop star Michael Bolton won favorite male poprock artist and his “Time, Love and Tenderness” was the top album in that category. Luther Vandross captured the male artist trophy and his “Power of Love” took the album honors in

Miss Fonda, who won Oscars for best actress in 1971 for “Klute” and in 1978 for “Coming Home,” recently married Ted Turner. • NEW YORK (AP) Joan Lunden, co-host of ABC’s “Good Morning America,” says she and her husband have separated. In a statement issued Monday, the 41-year-old Lunden said only that she and her husband of 13 years, TV producer Michael Krauss, would have joint custody of their three daughters. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Michael Jackson will receive the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters Lifetime Achievement Award March 5 at an awards dinner in Washington. “Over the years, he has both dominated and revolutionized popular music, dance and fashion,” said James L.
