Cubs shoot out lights against Cloverdale

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor CLOVERDALE Anyone doubting that Greencastle’s Tiger Cubs ability to play without alltime scoring leader Laura Ledbetter needed to see Thursday night’s West Central Conference game at Cloverdale. Ledbetter hit just 5-of-10 shots from the floor and scored just 14 points, 10 below her average and yet Greencastle still shot a blistering 54 percent (32-59) from the floor in an a 89-26 victory over Cloverdale’s Clovers. AMBER ASHER scored a career-high 28 points, hitting 12-of--16 shots from the floor and Jamie Sibbitt tied her pervious career high with an 18-point night, hitting 5-of--7 shots from the floor and 8-of-ll at the free throw line. Greencastle’s shooting and the 63-point winning margin was a combination of several factors. Cloverdale shot just 17 percent (1058) from the floor, 27 percent (622) from the free throw line and committed 31 turnovers. Greencastle converted many of each to fastbreak baskets. The Tiger Cubs scored the first 14 points of the game and led 18-1 going into the second quarter. Michelle Lewis, who had six points, scored Cloverdale’s first field goal of the game with 4:10 left in the second quarter. BY THAT TIME Ledbetter already had her third foul. She went to the bench 35 seconds into the second quarter with Greencastle up 22-2 and didn’t play again the first half. The departure of their scoring and rebounding leader didn’t slow

Tulsa hands ISU Missouri Valley loss

By The Associated Press Tulsa coach Orlando “Tubby” Smith was in the dumps after this week’s last-second loss to Illinois State. Thursday night’s 67-53 victory over Indiana State cheered him up. “I was concerned about coming back after a tough loss,” Smith said. “We showed a lot of character after the way we lost Monday night. We’re playing teams we can rebound with. We’re starting to find out what works best as a team.” The Golden Hurricane (6-7, 4-2) outrebounded the Sycamores 36-35 but coasted to victory by outscoring them 18-5 during a seven-minute run in the second half. Indiana State (5-8, 3-2) scored only six points during the first 10 minutes of the final half of the Missouri Valley Conference match-up.
