Purdue proves ‘Fab Five’ not so fabulous
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Michigan coach Sieve Fisher had been wondering how he could convince his talented freshmen to stop their “trash talking” and just play basketball. It appears the Big Ten may solve Fisher’s problem for him. If two consecutive defeats don’t shut the rookies up, nothing will. WOODY AUSTIN SCORED 19 points as Purdue sent the No. 15 Wolverines to a 65-60 defeat Wednesday night. The Boilermakers (10-5, 2-1) shot 51.9 percent and pounded Michigan (9-3, 1-2) for a 40-20 rebounding edge, including 24-7 at ; the defensive end. if you have any hope to challenge in this league, you need to ; win at home,” Fisher said. “They play well here. And they’ve beaten us five times in a row. This is not the end of the season. We’ve got to make up for this loss by winning a game on the road.” IT WAS THE fifth straight victory over Michigan for the Boilermakers, who were coming off a 7769 overtime win against lowa. The Wolverines lost 73-64 at Minnesota on Saturday. Fisher and Purdue coach Gene Ready were asked if all the publicity heaped on Michigan’s “Fabulous Five” freshmen was having a negative effect. “I wish I had them so I could find out,” Ready said with a laugh. “All I know is, our freshmen strug-

BILL WALSH Happiest days at Stanford
Stanford hiring Walsh STANFORD, Calif. (AP) Faced with offers from two former employers, Bill Walsh has reportedly turned his back on the 49crs and accepted the head coaching job at Stanford, where he says he spent the happiest years of his life. Stanford was set to officially announce Walsh’s appointment at a news conference today. He was offered a five-year contract worth $350,000 per year by the university’s athletic director, Ted Leland, the San Francisco Examiner reported Tuesday. WALSH REPLACES Denny Green, who left the Cardinal last week to become head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Green had been at the helm of Stanford football for three years, leading the team to an 8-3 record this past season before losing to Georgia Tech in the Aloha Bowl. “I’m surprised, but the more I thought about it I’m not so surprised,” said Mike Holmgren, former 49ers offensive coordinator who was recently named the head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

But Jalen Rose scored 7 of his 12 points in a 12-2 Michigan spurt that cut the margin to 58-55 with 2:57 remaining. Then Austin hit a 3-point basket with 2:19 left. Voters to decide if Giants have found way to San Jose
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) After three failed attempts to flee the cold, litter-stirring winds of Candlestick Park, the San Francisco Giants are getting a warm reception in San Jose. “That was practice, spring training. This is the real season,” Giants owner Bob Lurie said about the previous failures to move the Giants.. THIS TIME THE Giants have struck a deal with the San Jose city council to move into a proposed 48,000-seal, $lB5 million stadium in northern San Jose by the beginning of the 1996 season. The deal was announced Wednesday. But as in previous plans to move the team, voters will get the final say in the proposed move, possibly on the June ballot. The Giants, who would change their name to the “San Jose Giants,” have been looking for several years for a San Francisco Bay area alternative to Candlestick Park, where the team has struggled with icy winds and fog since 1960. Their Candlestick Park lease expires after the 1994 season. “I FEEL CONFIDENT for the first time that the home (needs) of the Giants will be satisfied,” Lurie said. “We have struggled through this process for what seems like 100 years ... but I feel good about this. I can’t wait to see the first shovel in the ground.” Asked if this would be his final bid to keep the team in Northern California, Lurie said, “It’s the last and the best.” Voters have three times rejected

eight rebounds for Purdue. “This league is going to be so tough this year, and the freshmen don’t know that,” Ready said. “You don’t know it unless you’ve been through it This is Craig Riley’s third win here. The experience here really helped him and Woody Austin. “Michigan is very talented. We’re very happy and lucky to win this. When we got the lead at first, it set the tone.” CORNELIUS McNARY scored Purdue’s first 6 points and the Boilermakers shot to a 23-12 lead with 10:44 left in the first half. Michigan cut the deficit to 29-25 with 6:00 remaining in the first half. But the Wolverines had only two free throws the rest of the way and Purdue led 37-27 at halftime. “I don’t like looking at the

By The Associated Press Les Lancaster, A 1 Leiter and Damon Berryhill avoided salary arbitration Wednesday by agreeing to one year contracts. Lancaster, 9-7 with a 3.52 ERA for Chicago, will receive sl.l million from the Cubs in 1992. Berryhill, traded by the Cubs to Atlanta, agreed to a deal for $325,000. In an injury-plagued season, he hit .188 with five homers and 14 RBIs. Leiter, also bothered by an arm injury, will make $175,000 from Toronto in 1992. He appeared in only three games last season, missing most of the year with a sore left shoulder.
stadium proposals: in 1987 and 1989 m San Francisco and in 1990 in 15 Santa Clara County counties. Although the 1990 bid to build a stadium in Santa Clara failed overall, voters in San Jose approved a 1 percent utility tax. “SAN JOSE WAS very supportive last time,” Lurie said. The 30-year lease agreement was reached after months of “tough, protracted, no-nonsense” negotiating, San Jose mayor Susan Hammer said. Hammer, who estimated the Giants would add at least S9O million annually to the local economy and create thousands of jobs, promised a campaign to convince

scoreboard and seeing Michigan on the negative side,” said Rose, who was averaging 20.6 points per game. “It was frustrating. It’s not that we’re overrated. We just haven’t peaked yet.” Rose said the Wolverines were frustrated by Purdue’s deliberate style. “That’s Big Ten basketball in itself: slow it down, take time off the clock,” Rose said. “Being a team with athletes, you get caught up. They hold the ball and you want to run.” IT DOESN’T GET any easier for the young Wolverines, whose next two games are at Illinois and Indiana. The Boilermakers return home to play Michigan State and Northwestern.
Since being acquired from the New York Yankees in 1989 for Jesse Barfield, Leiter has pitched only 14 2-3 innings for the Blue Jays. The players and the clubs will exchange arbitration figures on Friday with Barry Bonds and Cecil Fielder expected to file for record salaries. The San Francisco Giants also signed free-agent outfielder Chris James to a one-year contract. James hit .238 in 115 games for the Cleveland Indians last season with five home runs and 41 RBIs. He drove in a club record nine runs at Oakland on May 4 as the Indians beat the A’s 20-6.
voters to approve spending for the stadium. The initiative will probably appear on the June ballot, she said. “I have every hope and expectation that the San Jose Giants will be playing baseball a few miles from here,” Hammer said. “Today is the day that set that process into motion.” IF THE PROJECT IS approved, city officials will aim for groundbreaking in late 1993, with completion planned for April 1996. The Giants would remain at Candlestick Park through the end of the 1995 season before moving into their new home.

Pistons playing like contenders
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The obituary some were writing for the Detroit Pistons may have been a little premature. A month ago the Pistons were four games below .500 and in danger of finishing with a losing record for the first time since 1983, which was the last time Detroit failed to make the playoffs. Today the Pistons are 22-16 with a 5-game winning streak after defeating Indiana 118-104 Wednesday night their 12th victory in 14 games. “IT’S BASICALLY attitude,” Detroit coach Chuck Daly said of the difference since the start of the season. “We went through a very rough period, a learning process for all of us. We all got a little bit smarter about each other. We learned how hard we have to play.” Bill Laimbeer, Isiah Thomas, Joe Du mars and Dennis Rodman key factors in the two world championships have had to adjust to the departure of James Edwards and Vinnie Johnson since last season. They’ve also had to adjust to the arrival of veteran Orlando Woolridge, who has started the last 16 games and been in double figures in 13 of them. The Pistons, who had lost both meetings with Indiana this season, had all five starters finish in double figures Wednesday. Laimbeer, who brought a 10.0 average into the game, led the way with 25 points one below his season-high. “WE WERE DETERMINED tonight not to lose this ball game,” said Laimbeer, who made six of 10 shots. “We did the right things, both stopping their transition, getting some good rebounds when we had to, and making some open shots. We do that, we’re pretty hard to beat.”
