10-foot birdie putt in playoff decides opening PGA event

CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) Steve Elkington found out that slower golf can be winning golf. Elkington heeded the advice of his mentor, old champion Jack Burke, on Sunday for a victory in the season-opening event on the PGA Tour, the elite Tournament of Champions. “HE’S ALWAYS TELLING me I’m too nervous. He keeps telling me if I play slower, if I stay calm, I’ll be a better player,” Elkington said. “My goal this year was to try to stay calm, to play slower, not to get so fast. One week into the season, I did it.” He did it with a 10-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole that beat Brad Faxon in a sudden-death playoff in the tournament that brings together only the winners of 1991 tour titles. He did it after watching his game fall apart over the last 18 holes of

regulation. He did it after twice seeing two-stroke leads dwindle and disappear. He did it after missing an 8-foot birdie putt that would have won it outright on the 72nd hole. “I’D NEVER BEEN in a playoff before, but I wasn’t worried about going to a playoff. I was just glad I was there at the end,” said Elkington, an Australian who now resides at Burke’s Champions golf course in Houston. One hole later he had the third victory of his career. It was worth $144,000 and, Elkington said, “sets up the season for me.” That season will be played primarily in the United States. While Faxon was rushing to an airplane for a trip to Australia, Elkington took a leisurely 100-mile drive lo Palm Desert, Calif, and the Bob Hope Desert Classic. “This is my home tour. This is
