South girls win first
The South Putnam High School girls basketball team snapped a 10-game losing streak Thursday night with a 48-15 victory over the Eminence Eels. The Eagles used a full-court press in the second quarter and cut their turnovers to 16 for the game while recording their first victory of the year. “We put two halves together,” South coach Alan Rains said. “It was a good game for the girls.” South led 7-4 going into the second quarter. The Eagles outscored the Eels 18-3 in the quarter, netting layups off turnovers caused by their pressing defense. Tara Goodpaster and Hollie Duhammcl led South’s scoring with 10 points each. Duhammcl also pulled down 11 rebounds

The 400-freestyle relay team of Gerrit Thompson, Neil Johnson, Trent Boswell and Aaron Phillips won the 400freestyle relay in 4:07.70 to give South Putnam an 89-81 victory over the visiting Southmont Mounties Thursday night. Phillips came from behind on the anclior lap of the 400-relay to even South’s record at 3-3 for the season. Phillips started the final 50-yards of the relay about three yards behind and by less than the length of his hand, according to coach Joe Condon. South won with superior depth. Southmont won event of the 12 events. ‘They don’t have as many swimmers this year and we outdepthed them. We took a lot of thirds, fourths and fifths and that was enough to get us over the hump,” Condon said.

DePauw offensive in victory
By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor By nature, the DePauw Tigers are a collection of selfless, teamoriented basketball players. They look for open teammates rather shots. Coach Royce Waltman has been trying to change that. He wants the Tigers looking for their shots. They did Thursday night and it led to a 77-50 victory over the PurdueCalumet Lakers and a big night for center Moose Hecko. HECKO SCORED 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while leading the 8-3 Tigers by the NAIA Division I Lakers. The 6-5 Hecko hit 11-of-18 shots from the floor and 3-of-5 free throws in 33 minutes. “The biggest thing, we got Hecko in deep with some room to operate. We haven’t done that all year,” coach Waltman said. “We’ve been so sloppy in our cutting that we’re always on top of each other. Tonight we made some crisp cuts and suddenly there was a feeder with a great deal of space between himself and Hecko and we got it in deep several time.” TODD SEIFFERLEIN scored 15 points, hitting 2-of-3 from threepoint range, as the Tigers came out looking for their shot. “We come off (screens) looking pass first and then the man is not up into us and the feed becomes hard and then the shot becomes hard as an afterthought,” coach Waltman explained. “We’d like the shot to be the first thought and then make the feed when it’s there. We’ve gotten better at that but we still need to get better.” Purdue-Calumet’s Lakers tried to sag back inside against to open the game, but Seifferlein opened DePauw’s scoring, and an 11-0 run, with a three-pointer. End of sagging defense. ON THE NEXT possession Hecko’s hook shot, missing the last three or four games, reappeared to put DePauw ahead 5-2. “(Eric) Bruksch is all over me about that. He says, ‘Moose use your hook,”’ Hecko said. “I think the first four shots I shot were hook shots. That’s a good shot if you’re and undersized center because you’re out away from the defense and it’s really hard to block. So you can credit Bruksch for that.” Bruksch’s other contribution, the one he makes every game, trig-
Cubs beat Cougars with fastbreak
When Greencastle rallied to within five points of 12-1 Own Valley on Tuesday, it told the Tiger Cubs something about what they are capable of doing. To North Putnam’s Cougars, that discovery may have been the worst thing that could have happened. GREENCASTLES TIGER Cubs kicked their running game into high geer for a 78-43 West Central Conference victory over the Cougars Thursday at McAnally Center. The victory raised Greencastle’s overall record 8-2 and conference record to 4-1. “The girls found out down at Owen Valley where our level of play needs to be. We pretty much kept it at that level last night,” Greencastle coach Glen Hile said. Playing its first game since the Putnam County Tourney final, also against Greencastle, North Putnam dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play. GREENCASTLE outscored North 23-8 in the second quarter with guards Amber Asher and Tina Regnier accounting for 14 of those points on layups off fastbreaks. “We played really hard half-court man-to-man defense and the girl girls, Jamie (Sibbitt) and Laura (Ledbetter) got the ball out for the break,” coach Hile said. Sibbitt had 15 rebounds and Ledbetter 10 in the contest. “I don’t know if it’s a concentrated effort or if it’s just the fact Jamie and Laura are just starting to look (down court). We’ve definitely got our eyes open,” Hile said.

The pesky Bruksch stole the ball five times in the first half and the Tigers converted most into points. “HE DID A good job. He disrupted them a good bit,” Waltman noted. By getting the ball inside on offense and forcing the Lakers into 14 turnovers in the first half, DePauw built a 44-23 halftime lead while shooting 60.7 percent (17-28) from the floor. Normally a dependent upon its defense, DePauw attacked PurdueCalumet’s defense all night. Hecko credited the adjustments Waltman made in the motion offense for the improved movement. “HE PUT IN a pattern for us to start now, where we start screening earlier,” Hecko said. “And we’re working at coming off downscreens at different angles and catching it and squaring up ready to shoot because nobody was doing that. North hit just 9-of-28 shots (32 percent) from the floor in the first half, which helped feed Greencastle’s fastbreak. The Tiger Cubs shot 53 percent (20-38) from the floor in the half and a seasonbest 49 percent (34-70) for the game. “IT HELPS WHEN were shooting layups,” coach Hile noted. Ledbetter, the state’s 13th leading scorer, paced Greencastle’s scoring with 27 points. Asher netted 16 for Greencastle, Tina Regnier a career-high 15 and Sibbitt had 14. Cary Parker continued to lead North’s scoring. The senior guard was the only Cougar in double figures, netting 15 points on six field goals and three-of-four free throw shooting.
