Dear Abby

Trip down memory lane mostly happy stroll

DEAR ABBY: I was electrified to see a name in your column that took me back 75 years! That’s right years! It was Wilferd A. Peterson, the author of “Slow Me Down, Lord.” Wilferd and I were Boy Scouts together from 1914 to 1918 in Muskegon, Mich. Merrit Lamb was the head of all scoutingin Muskegon. Lamb enlisted in World War I and was killed in action. Wilferd Peterson was proposed as his successor but was passed over because he never graduated from high school. (Neither did I.) It was a great disappointment, but shortly after that, Wilferd moved to Grand Rapids and later became a successful author and publisher. I went to work in a machine shop and saved enough money to attend the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, then spent 65 years behind a drawing board in advertising agencies in Chicago and New York. My claim to fame: While in New York, I was responsible for the original inception of two top-notch magazines 55 years ago Woman’s Day and Family Circle. I am now retired and living in Arizona. And at the age of 90, I am still swimming and walking daily. Thank you, Abby, for taking me on a trip down memory lane. W. FREDERIC CLARK DEAR MR. CLARK: My plea-

sure. Just keep swimming and walking daily for another 10 years, and you will live to be a hundred. DEAR ABBY: About a month ago, my 9-year-old daughter started making some inappropriate remarks about sex. We sat down and talked for a couple of hours about the correct information. She promised she would come to me with any questions she had, and not rely on other fourth-graders’ information. In return, I promised her truthful answers. Shortly after this talk I caught her masturbating. I come from the generation that says if it feels good, do it, but I am very uncomfortable with her behavior at this age. I have talked with her and told her I didn’t feel it was appropriate behavior for a

9-year-old, and 1 would like to see it stopped. Well, it hasn’t, and I don’t know what else to do. I am very uncomfortable at the thought of a sexually charged 9-year-old walking around. I’m concerned also because I have an 8-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old daughter, possibly learning this from their older sister. I will sign my name so you will know this letter is valid, but please do not print it. NAMELESS DEAR NAMELESS: I do not doubt the validity of your letter. You are not alone. I receive many letters expressing that concern horn parents of 7- and 8-year-olds. My advice is to simply ignore it. Do not punish or scold the child. It is not unnatural, and it is certainly not a crime. That is the way all people discover their sexual feelings. * * * Most teen-agers do not know the facts about drugs, AIDS, and how to prevent unwanted pregnancy. It’s all in Abby’s updated, expanded booklet, “What Every Teen Should Know.” To order, send a business-size, self-addressed envelope, plus check or money order for $3.95 ($4.50 in Canada) to: Dear Abby, Teen Booklet, P.O. Box 447, Mount Morris, 111. 61054. (Postage is included.)

Stopping windows from sweating Q. Some time ago you had an article on what to do for double-paned windows that sweat. I failed to make a note of this and don’t remember what to put on the window. Could you please help me? J.A. Miller, Sulphur, La. A. If you are fortunate enough to be able to reach the inner side of the glass panes (not all double-paned windows can be wiped clean on the inside), wipe the condensation off and dry the window. To help prevent the moisture from sticking to the glass in the future, use a dry cloth to put a small amount of undiluted liquid shampoo on the inner glass. Then just wipe it clean. Heloise SMALL HOLES Dear Heloise: To cover small holes in my walls made by nails or push pins. I use a stick of white chalk. 1 just mb chalk over the hole and brush away any excess dust. It works like magic. Linda, Jacksonville, Fla. PAINTED CARPET Q. Please help! My toddler spilled a fourth of a pint of black paint on our light-brown carpet. I'd appreciate any advice you may have. Kim Hauersperger, San Bemadino, Calif. A. 1 spoke with the authorities at the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration (ASCR) and was told that you need to have a professional check your carpet. The paint has probably soaked into the backing and padding and any attempt you make to remove it is merely going to pull the paint from there to the surface. The professional may be able to remove it, however. Heloise DECORATED BATHROOM Dear Heloise: 1 recently redecorated my bathroom in a Southwestern motif and wanted the liquid soap dispenser to match. It was impossible to find one, so I came up with the idea of cutting a rectangle from a leftover piece of the new wallpaper (slightly larger than the label on the bottle) and applying it over the label. It worked beautifully and everyone wants to know where 1 found a soap bottle to match my wallpaper exactly. Darlene Durr, Eagle Point, Ore. PAINTED DOORKNOBS Dear Heloise: To avoid getting paint on the doorknob, I smear it with petroleum jelly before I paint the door. It has saved me a lot of time and I don’t have to be as careful painting because I know 1 can quickly wipe the knobs clean. Andy A., Oklahoma City, Okla. UNIQUE STATIONERY Dear Heloise: We get quite a few junk-mail catalogs as well as the newspaper. Rather than just throwing them away when I’m through, I try to do my bit by recycling. I clip out all the pretty or interesting pictures that could be used as a decoration on plain or lined paper and make my own stationery. It’s easy to find pictures of interest to everyone you write to. This way my stationery is different from anyone else’s, I’m getting my money’s worth out of junk mail and newspapers and saving money on expensive stationery. I also do this to make unique birthday and anniversary cards. Beverly C. Miller, North Ft. Myers, Fla.

SHIVERING... BUT SURE

There are better places to seek shelter than a doorstep. But not if you know the door is sure to open! This isn't just a picture of a cold, wet puppy. It is a portrait of faith. And of the things which so often go with faith; patience and courage.
