Illinois nips Purdue in overtime

CHAMPAIGN, 111. (AP) - llinois coach Lou Henson said the Illini’s Big Ten opener against Purdue was the kind of win he likes. “It was a hard-fought bailgame. It’s always nice to win those,” Henson said after Wednesday’s 7472 overtime victory. “A break here or a break there and you have a chance to win it.” “WE DIDN’T HAVE a lot of turnovers and we played unbelievable defense,” Henson said. “Offensively, we played pretty well. Any time we shoot 49 percent, that’s pretty good for us.” Illinois sophomore forward Tom Michael said the victory “wasn’t pretty, but we got the job done. “We weren’t supposed to win many this year, but we’re going to prove them wrong,” said Michael, who led the mini with a career-high 20 points. ILLINOIS IS NOW 10-7 in Big Ten openers under Henson. The II-

Pitt hits free throws to upset Syracuse

By The Associated Press For four straight seasons, Syracuse has started out with at least 10 straight victories. And for the second time, the streak has been stopped by Pittsburgh. Sean Miller scored all 11 of his points in the last 4:08 and the Panthers stung the No. 20 Orangemen 83-74 Wednesday night. SYRACUSE (10-1, 2-1 Big East) led by seven points in the second half before Pitt came back to win at home. Darren Morningstar added 21 points for the Panthers. “Pitt is very strong inside with steady leadership,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “They’re going to be a real factor in the league.” Pitt, one of the nation’s worst free throw-shooting teams at 58 percent entering the game, scored its last nine points from the foul line. Miller was 8-for-8 down the stretch and also made a long 3pointer. Pitt (10-4,2-0) beat No. 18 Seton Hall last week, and Morningstar and Miller kept the Panthers unbeaten in the Big East. Morningstar divided playing time with 6-11 Eric Mobley, who scored all nine of his points in the first half. “Darren didn’t play like he had much respect for Siock at all, and he put it to (Conrad) Mcßae when he came in there, too,” Pitt coach Paul Evans said. The Panthers put it away when Orlando Antigua was fouled by Mike Hopkins while going for a loose ball and Mcßae drew a technical foul for shoving Miller to the floor. Antigua made one of two free throws and Miller made both of the technical foul shots, making it 7971 with 55 seconds left. David Johnson sewed 24 points and made four of Syracuse’s eight 3-pointers. Freshman Lawrence Moten added 17 points. No. 1 Duke 83, Maryland 66 Thomas Hill scored 25 points and Duke pulled away to beat Maryland for the ninth straight time.

Boilermaker coach Gene Keady said. “It seems like once you catch up you lose your momentum and you can’t get any hold on what you’re supposed to do.” “MY BIGGEST CONCERN is our inside scoring,” Keady said. “We took too many perimeter shots. You shoot 67 times and it’s way too many to win in this league, especially when you don’t have any good rebounders and we just don’t have any.” “They shoot 29 free throws and we shoot 9, so we’re not going inside enough,” the Purdue coach added. Free throws at least in the overtime were the last thing Henson had to worry about. Illinois was 9-11 from the line after regulation. THE GAME WASN’T decided until Illinois’ Scott Pierce hit two free throws with :23 remaining in overtime to put the Illini up 74-70.

The Blue Devils (9-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) led by 13 points at halftime and scored the first 10 points of the second half for a 51-28 lead. Bobby Hurley made three 3pointers for Duke, giving him a school-record 129 in his career. Christain Laettner had 13 points for the Blue Devils, while Walt Williams had 25 for Maryland. No. 4 Kansas 81, Wichita State 51 Adonis Jordan had 20 points as Kansas won easily at Wichita State to stay unbeaten. The Jayhawks (11-0) used their fast break for a 48-30 lead at halftime and added the first 10 points of the second half. Wichita State (2-7) made only 19 of 53 shots and lost its seventh straight game. Memphis State 89, No. 12 Missouri 78 Missouri’s streak of 17 straight regular-season victories ended when Anfemee Hardaway scored 26 points to lead Memphis State. Purdue scored with one second left to fall just short of sending the game into a second overtime. Deon Thomas added 19 points, and Rennie Clemons had 18 for Illinois. Purdue was led by Matt Waddell with a game-high 21, Woody Austin with 19 and Craig Riley with 11. Illinois held a narrow lead for most of the game. But consecutive baskets by Austin and Riley put Purdue up 58-54 with 4:22 remaining in regulation play. Illinois’ Michael followed with a 3-pointer and then Pierce scored to put Illinois back up 59-58 with 3:15 remaining. THE TEAMS TRADED baskets from there on until Illinois captured a 63-60 lead with about 20 seconds remaining. Purdue’s Line Darner sent the game into overtime with a 3-point basket with :17 remaining.

hosts scored the next nine points to break it open. Hardaway shot 8 of 15 from the field and was 9 of 11 from the foul line. Kelvin Allen added 14 points for Memphis State (7-3). Anthony Peeler scored 25 points for Missouri. No. 16 Alabama 65, No. 13 Arkansas 63 Latrell Sprewell made two key defensive plays in the last seven seconds and Alabama held on to win its eighth straight game. Alabama (13-1) led 64-63 when Todd Day, who led all scorers with 21 points, made a layup that apparently put Arkansas ahead with seven seconds left But Day was called for charging into Sprewell and the basket was disallowed. After Sprewell made one foul shot, he stole the ball from Lee Mayberry at midcourt in the closing moments. James Robinson scored 20 points for the Crimson Tide. Arkansas (12-3) lost in its first SEC road game since joining the league this season.

NCAA raises requirements for freshman eligibility

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Tom Osborne stood in the middle of a huge, nearly deserted ballroom and read what some might see as a virtual death sentence for the typical college athletic program. A short time earlier, the NCAA’s largest schools had adjourned after raising freshman requirements from a 2.0 grade point in 11 “core” high school courses to a 2.5 in 13. Knowing the new rules would probably pass, Nebraska officials ran a check last summer of their athletes in all sports since 1986, when the 2.00 rule was in effect. Osborne had the results in written words and computer graphics and called them “alarming.” “Forty-eight percent of our minority students would have had between 2.0 and 2.5 in their core courses,” he said. “Almost half would be eliminated, assuming they don’t raise their

standards. The whites would have had 15-16 percent who would not have had a 2.5.” The new requirements greatly toughen the freshman eligibility rule known popularly as Proposition 48, which has been swimming in controversy since its adoption in 1983 because it uses the SAT and ACT standardized tests. Some educators, black and white, charge the tests are racially and culturally discriminatory. The new, tougher Proposition 48 includes a sliding scale for the test scores that enables athletes to compensate for a grade point under 2.5 with progressively higher test scores. The Presidents Commission, which pushed the new rule through Wednesday’s session of the NCAA convention, argued that minority athletes would meet the challenge of the new standards.
