By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor North Putnam and Cloverdale eased back into the second half of the high school basketball season last weekend with one game. Greencastle and South Putnam are diving in head first into the second half of the season this week with a double-game weekend. Greencastle, 2-3, plays at home Friday and Saturday night. The Tiger Cubs host the West Vigo Vikings, 4-2, on Friday, then open West Central Conference play Saturday against the Owen Valley Patriots, 4-2. SOUTH PUTNAM AND North Putnam play at home Friday and then travel to Terre Haute Saturday for a doubleheader at Hulman Civic Center. North plays Riverton Parice at 7 p.m. and South meets South Vermillion at 8:30 p.m. in the doubleheader. Admission is $3 and tickets are on sale at both schools. On Friday night, North, 4-3, will host the Edgewood Mustangs, 3-3, in a big conference clash, while South is host to Rockville’s Rox, 34. Cloverdale, 3-4, is idle on Friday, but play at home Saturday against Eminence. GREENCASTLE AT HOME The Tiger Cubs are returning to action with one of their toughest weekends of the season. Both West Vigo and Owen Valley are 4-2. “It’s a difficult weekend, but one I always look forward to,” Greencastle coach Doug Miller said. “The West Vigo game always gives us an idea of where we stand.” GREENCASTLE HAS shown a solid onetwo punch on offense with 64 Bryan Murray averaging 17.8 points per game and 6-1 Monye Steadmon scoring 14 a contest. Sophomore Reid Snellenbarger is averaging nine points a game. Defense was Greencastle’s trouble in the 2-3 start. The Tiger Cubs allowed 72.2 points per game. However, a zone defense proved effective against Rockville in the final game before Christmas. The zone also kept the Cubs out of foul trouble and limited the Rox to just six free throw attempts. The Cubs committed just 10 fouls and under the new rule this year it takes seven for a team to get into the bonus. “With good intelligent play, I’m not sure a team should ever get into the bonus,” Miller said. “If we can keep people off the (free throw) line that’s a definite advantage for us.” WEST VIGO HAS beaten North Central (Sullivan), South Vermillion, Northview and Marshall, 111. and lost to Edgewood and Terre Haute South. “We’ve had moments we’ve looked outstanding and we’ve had moments where we haven’t looked very good,” West Vigo coach Steve DeGroote said. The Vikings are led by 6-3 forward Zach Johnson at 21 points a game. Johnson, however, doesn't start. He’s the sixth man. Coach DeGroote will start Jimmy Chadwick and freshman Culley DeGroote, both 6-2 l /i, at forwards with a muscular 6-214 Mike Likens at center and Brian Warn and Keith Favre at guards. GREENCASTLE WORRIES DeGroote. “The experience I’ve had with them (Greencastle), is you got to be ready for anything,” the coach said. Owen Valley will play at Northview on Friday, so the Patriots won’t be any more rested than the Tiger Cubs. Coach Rick Johnston’s team got off to a 4-0 start, but lost its last two games to Terre Haute South and Bloomfield. The Patriots shot 35 percent against Bloomfield, but still lost by only four points. “I think they’re going to come in here very hungry and try to re-establish themselves,” coach Miller predicted. The Patriots should be healthier. Senior guard Rob Fulk has missed three of OV’s six games because of an ankle injury. Fulk is averaging 14 points a game since.
South’s defense better, but offense still missing
MONROVIA The South Putnam girls accomplished half of what they set out to do Tuesday at Monrovia High School. The Eagles held Monrovia’s All-WCC forward Amy Turner to just five points. But the Eagles couldn’t score enough points on the offensive end, falling to the Bulldogs 4427 in the conference contest “Our main goal was to shut down Turner. We had Rachel Leonard guard Turner,” South Putnam coach Alan Rains said. “Our defense is getting better. Forty-four (points), we can live with that, but if we score only 27 points a game we aren’t going to beat very many people,” the coach addedi. Monrovia beat South on the

ALONG WITH THE 6-1 Fulk at forward, Owen Valley’s starting lineup is expected to include 6-2 Matt Craney at forward, 6-3 Justin Bryce at center and 6-0 Christian Lefauve and 60 Danny Bell at guards. Last year Craney came off the bench for 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the Patriots by the Tiger Cubs 5847. NORTH PUTNAM PLAYS TWO The Cougars will take the floor Friday night with the state’s leading scorer. Daniel Johnson, already North’s all-time leading scorer, is averaging 31.4 points per game and he’s done it without the special plays. “We haven’t made any special plays,” North coach Jim Brothers said, “but from the start of the year we’ve said when we’re in a half-court game we want Daniel to touch the ball. He may not get a shot, but we want him to at least touch the ball.” FROM THAT PHILOSOPHY Johnson is finding teammates open. North took a fourth quarter lead at Zionsville when a doubleteammed Johnson found Jerry Robertson open in the lane. “He’s a nice player. When you consider Zionsville was playing a zone and trying to keep the ball away from him and he was still able to score 36 points that’s something,” Edgewood coach Jeff Bertsch said of Johnson. “His teammates seem to understand he has to have the basketball and it looks like Jim (Brothers) is going to have a nice ball club.” Plus, Erie Pipes is averaging 12 points a game. He found himself open for three-point shots when Zionsville tried to sag back on defense. “I know we’re going to see a lot of gimmick defenses,” Brothers predicted. EDGEWOOD WON’T PLAY a gimmick defense. The Mustangs start out in a man-to man defense. “We got to feel we can pressure their guards. I know Roger (Busch) is a good athlete, but we feel we have to pressure their guards,” Bertsch said. Edgewood has beaten West Vigo, Bloomington North and Northview and lost to Bloomington South, Bedford-North Lawrence and Cascade (currently 4-0 in the WCC). “Every year it seems like they come in here with a not very good record because they play the Bloomington schools and Bedford,” Brothers said. This is a different kind of Edgewood team. With guard Jim Schoonover as the only hold over from last year’s 87-85 shootout, the Mustangs aren’t running as much. “WE START OUT that way. I’m a believer you can always slow down, but you can’t always speed up. We’re a little more versatile this year. Some of the best basketball we’ve played has been in the half-court (game),” Bertsch said. “This team has to play good solid defense and execute good fundamentals on offense. Everygame is going to be a dogfight.” Sophomore Araon Hancock leads Edge wood’s scoring at 13 points a game, but will come off the bench against North Putnam. Edgewood will start 64 Clark Chafin at center, but he will guard Johnson on defense. At forwards will be 6-2 Tim Fisher and 6-16 Darren Raper, who averages 10 points a game. Schoonover will start at one guard and 5-11 David Fleming will make his first start at point guard. AT HULMAN CENTER on Saturday, the Cougars must worry about coming back and playing hard against a Riverton Parke team they have often overlooked. Last year coach Brothers went to his bench much of the second half when the regulars didn’t play with emotion and intensity. Riverton Parke’s Panthers are 24 and idle Friday. The Panthers have beaten Turkey Run and Attica and lost to Fountain Central, Southmont, Clay City and South Vermillion. They are led by 5-10 guard Chad Wilson at
offensive boards. Phcifer scored 13 point and Hayden 14 for the Bullodgs. South trailed only 25-16 at halftime, but had its usual bad third quarter and Monrovia took a 35-20 lead into the tourin quarter. Pacers lose 12-point lead, game
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Los Angeles Clippers find themselves in strange territory today and Ron Harper says its no accident. Harper’s basket with 5.4 seconds left Wednesday night gave the Clippers a 104-102 victory over the Indiana Pacers, giving the team a big road triumph in its bid for the franchise’s first winning season since the 1978-79 season. THAT WAS THE franchise’s first season in California following the move of the former Buffalo Braves to San Diego. The Clippers finished 43-39 that season and haven’t won more than 36 games since. Elsewhere in the NBA, it was Boston 99, New York 95; New Jersey 103, Minnesota 97; Philadelphia 114, Houston 104; Chicago 108, Miami 106; Detroit 114, Sacramento 95; the Los Angeles Clippers 104, Indiana 102; San Antonio 103, the Los Angeles Lakers 87; Milwaukee 99, Utah 98; and Phoenix 135, Denver 114. The Clippers overcame a 12point deficit in the final eight minutes Wednesday to bring their record to 18-17. “All season we’ve been playing hard and not knowing how many points we’re down,” said Harper, who had 19 points and 7 assists. “We believe that if we’re down, we can come back.” LOS ANGELES ALSO had a
16.5 points per game and 6-0 forward Darrell Pruitt at 16 points a game. Rounding out the starting lineup will be 64 John Myers at forward, 6-0 Chad Campbell at center and 5-9 John Amers at guard. THILL WILL BE North’s second game ever at Hulman Center. The last one was the 1990 regional against Terre Haute North. “Some of these guys, it’s going to be their first time ever there. That’s going to put a little wrinkle in things,” Brothers said. As for starters this weekend, North will go with Johnson and Pipes at forwards with 6-0 Kevin Mendenhall at center and Roger Busch and Justin Barker at guards. Jeremy Butler and Jeremy Windmiller will be available this week. SOUTH PUTNAM PLAYS TWO Coach Kieth Puckett turned back the clock at South Putnam over the Christmas break. The Eagles took some time off, then went into preseason practice. “Since Christmas we’ve tried to make this our training camp. I’ve never had a group I felt was hurt by football’s advancement (in the state tourney) like this group because I have so many inexperienced players,” Puckett said. NOW PUCKETT HOPES to play South Putnam basketball run on offense and press on defense. “We really worked on getting back to playing the way we intended to play,” Puckett said. “We would really prefer to run the ball down the floor. If we can stay healthy I think we got that engrained in the kids.” Damon Slaton leads the Eagles’ scoring at 22.5 points per game. “We don’t match up with Slaton at all, but not many teams do. I think he’s one of the best players in the area. I thought that last year,” Rockville coach Mitch Lancaster said. Rockville and South Vermillion are both built around a star player. Rockville is build around 59 guard Rich Schelsky, who averages 25.6 points per game, and South Vermillion depends on 6-3 Louie Gudino to score 20 a night. “THEY’RE BOTH CENTERED around really good players, really good scorers,” Puckett said. “From what I’ve seen, Rockville is a much more balanced team than last year. Schelsky is really a good passer.” Jason Stewart, a 6-0 forward, is averaging 12.3 points per game and 6-1 forward Brent McMullen is scoring 10 a contest. As for starters, South Putnam will go with the Slaton and Jason Foxx at forwards with Todd Carter at center and Mark McKay and Jeff Haltom at guards. REMATCH AT CLOVERDALE On Dec. 13, a flu riddled Cloverdale basketball team lost at Eminence 81-62. Point-guard Bill Bryd and center Aaron Gould didn’t play and others were ill and soon headed for bed. That night, Brannon Leonard walked to the bus thinking he would start the junior varsity game. He had only three minutes of varsity playing time at that point. Coach Jeff Cherry later recounted that he told Leonard, “Don’t dress for the JV game tonight. Oh, and by the way, you’re starting at point guard tonight.” Saturday night, the Clovers have an opportunity avenge that loss when the Eminence Eels come to Cloverdale. COACH CHERRY HAD a long post-game meeting with the Clovers following last Friday’s 69-63 loss. Cloverdale shot 35 percent for the night. Ryan Ford, the team’s leading scorer at 22.4 points per game, scored just 13 points. Eminence has a balanced team. Guard Jamey Eastes scored 27 points against the Clovers in the first meeting and netted another 25 against North Putnam. Josh Balay, the Eels’ 64 forward, has yet to get going. He netted just 11 points and six rebounds against the Clovers the first time around and six points and two rebounds against North Putnam.
big comeback in the first half after Indiana scored the game’s first nine points and led 19-9 when Rik Smits hit a jumper with 4:04 left in the first quarter. The Clippers, who missed their first four shots and had two turnovers before scoring with 8:28 left in the opening quarter, tied the score for the first time at 23-23 on Ken Norman’s two free throws and the Pacers led 50-49 at halftime. Vem Fleming, who had never made two 3-point shots in a game and had made only 23 in his eight seasons, hit two within five seconds of each other in a 16-3 Indiana spurt that gave the Pacers a 91-79 lead with eight minutes remaining. But, tied the game 95-95 with 3:31 left on a three-point play by James Edwards, who scored 10 of his 12 points in the final quarter, INDIANA, WHICH wasted a triple-double by Detlef Schrempf, took its final lead at 102-101 when Fleming made one of two free throws with 57 seconds remaining. Edwards then missed a short jumper and Chuck Person, who led Indiana with 20 points, grabbed the rebound and called a timeout to avoid falling out of bounds. However, the Pacers had used their six and were hit with a technical foul. Doc Rivers made the free throw, tying the game for the 16th time overall and the fifth time in the

final quarter and Person missed a 3point attempt with 30 seconds to play. Danny Manning, who led the Clippers with 22 points, then inbounded the ball to Harper under the basket for the winning basket. INDIANA’S LaSALLE Thompson missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, and officials rejected Indiana claims that Manning was guilty of goal-tending on the shot. “These guys are fun to play with,” said Rivers, who had 17 points. “They’re young and have talent. We’re just trying to learn to win.” The Clippers won despite being outshot (49.4-45.3 percent) and outrebounded 56-44. “We picked up our defensive intensity,” Rivers said. “We made some nice rotations. I think the biggest point for us was the way we rotated the ball. We just moved the ball around and we didn’t shoot the ball unless we had open shots.” THE LOSS WAS the sixth in seven starts for Indiana, which had started the season talking about 50 victories and now finds itself 13-21. “We showed them what play they would run and we just didn’t execute the defense,” said Indiana coach Bob Hill. “When it comes down to the close games, we just can’t close the door,” said Schrempf, who has season-highs of 10 assists and 17
cent from the floor. Already North's all-time leading scorer, Johnson has 1,208 career points. (BannerGraphic photo by Gary Goodman).

rebounds to go with 10 points in 33 minutes off the bench. “We played like we didn’t want to be here tonight and they stayed with us and took it from us.” The Clippers won despite losing leading scorer Charles Smith in the first half when he reinjured his right shoulder that he hurt in the team’s last game. “I just decided to call it a night,” said Smith, who failed to score in 12 minutes and didn’t have a rebound. “I wasn’t helping the team. I was hurting them more than I was helping.” He anticipates being ready when the Clippers play Friday at Philadelphia in the fifth game of a six-game, nine-day road trip. Magic 104, Super Sonics 103 Count the ways that the Orlando Magic snapped a 17-game losing streak. Missing their leading scorer and No. 1 point guard and having only eight players in uniform because of injuries, the Magic got a career-high 35 points from Sam Vincent and 30 from Catledge in Wednesday night’s 104-103 victory at Seattle. Ranked 24th in the NBA in free-throw shooting, Orlando went 32-for-33 from the line, including 17-for-18 by Vincent, whose last two foul shots came with 0.6 seconds left.
