Dear Abby Old friend has reservations about lunch plans made for two

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I hosted a large wedding for our daughter recently. A week later, “Melanie,” an old friend of mine who is divorced, called to ask for the telephone number of the groom’s mother, who is also divorced. (I’ll call her Katie.) Melanie had met Katie at the wedding, found they had a lot in common, and decided to get together for lunch. She said Katie had given her her telephone number, but she had misplaced it. I gave Melanie Katie’s number then I told her I was hurt to think that she would make a date to see Katie without including me, whereupon she said I was “welcome” to join them for lunch. I was so hurt and angry, I did not accept. Abby, was it proper for Melanie to make a date with Katie without including me? EXCLUDED DEAR EXCLUDED: I see nothing wrong with Melanie and Katie deciding to get together for lunch without including you.

Heloise Tips for packing up the holidays

Dear Readers: Did y’all have a good holiday? Hope you got everything you wished for. Unfortunately, now comes the time to pack away all of those Christmas decorations, heirlooms and treasured mementos. Here are some tips that will be invaluable when packing. • Of course, care needs to be taken when wrapping breakables. Glass balls can be wrapped in newspaper, tissue paper or stored with foam packing “peanuts.” Egg cartons or sectioned boxes work great for them. • Heirlooms or treasured decorations should be wrapped separately and packed in boxes by themselves. • Label boxes with all contents so sorting won’t be necessary. • Tree garlands and trimmings can be wrapped around cardboard gift-wrap tubes and stored on top of breakables. Don’t place heavy items on top of lighter or breakable ones. • Christmas lights can be wrapped around cardboard tubes to keep them tangle-free. They can be stored in the same box as an artificial tree or boxed separately. • Artificial trees should be placed in the storage area last, as they are usually the first thing needed for the next year. Heloise PUFFY PAINTS Dear Heloise: Here’s a hint for parents of early walkers and toddlers who have to maneuver on slick non-carpeted areas. I found that the latest craft craze that uses puffy fabric paints on T-shirts and sweats are great for the soles of socks, sleepers and pajamas. It is basically the same stuff that is on the non-skid socks. The puffy paints come in all colors, are about $1 a bottle, and they are so easy to use.

But I do see something wrong with your telling Melanie that you were “hurt,” thus embarrassing her into inviting you to join them. It would have been gracious of Melanie to have invited you, but nowhere is it written that because they met at your daughter’s wedding they were obligated to do so. ♦ ♦ * DEAR ABBY: I have been an avid reader of your column for many years

One bottle of white has taken care of my son’s socks and has been passed on to a friend. Judi Blaine-Stewart, Fairfax, Va. KITCHEN SPONGES Dear Heloise: For a long time I never used sponges because they turned sour, but 1 found that if you run the cold water over the sponge while squeezing until all the suds are gone each evening, you will never have a sour one. Marie K. Battling, Rochester, N.Y. REMOVING A STAMP Dear Heloise: Here’s a hint for removing a postage stamp or label from an envelope. After trimming the stamp from the envelope, lay it picture-side-down on a counter or table top and place a warm, wet sponge on top of it for five minutes. The stamp will then peel off the paper with most of the adhesive intact! Sure saves on vapor bums from holding the envelope over steam. Pat Havener, Cortland, Ohio MEMORABLE NEWSPAPER Dear Heloise: When our daughter was born last November we saved the newspaper so later in life she could read what happened on that special day. and now I need your help. I am a compulsive gambler, now living in Okinawa, Japan. Fortunately, I am a member of Gamblers Anonymous, which has been a lifesaver for me. There is a G.A. chapter here, but unfortunately, it isn’t very well-known. As a matter of fact, there are only two members at this time. The Pacific Stars and Stripes carries “Dear Abby” and everyone reads it. It would be great if more people knew about Gamblers Anonymous. The stakes are high here, and so is the divorce rate, due to compulsive gambling. Please help. A COMPULSIVE GAMBLER DEAR GAMBLER: I have had readers sing the praises of Gamblers Anonymous, and after this hits print, five will getcha 10 that your membership will skyrocket. Good luck. Please give me a progress report in July of ’92. * * * DEAR ABBY: I recently became aware that handicapped stalls in

women’s restrooms have hooks (for hanging coats, bags, etc.) placed near the top of the door. I fail to see how these hooks can be utilized by anyone confined to a wheelchair. I have observed this in Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and New York. I don’t know how widespread this may be, but thought you might be the proper one to address this oversight. By the way, I am not handicapped. LYNNE KANNAN, RICHMOND, VA DEAR LYNNE: Going public with your observation may inspire the offenders to correct this oversight. And it wouldn’t hurt to mention it to the management. Thanks for a helpful suggestion. * * * This one's for everybody, from teens to seniors!
