People in the news Stone defends JFK’ intent LOS ANGELES (AP) Oliver Stone took on a former Warren Commission staffer who charged that the “JFK” director distorted history for profit Stone wrote in a Los Angeles Times column Monday that Richard M. Mosk was “looking only to whitewash the Warren Commission,” which concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone, assassinated President Kennedy. “It is a tragedy for this country that its ‘respectable’ and ‘honorable’ men, its jurists, government officials, media Establishment continue to participate in the greatest lie ever put across on the American people,” Stone wrote. Mosk had taken issue with the way “JFK” advances the theory that the assassination was a vast conspiracy involving the CIA, the FBI, the Pentagon, the Mafia and defense contractors. Meanwhile, results of a recent poll show about three-quarters of Americans think there was a conspiracy behind the assassination of President Kennedy, and a similar majority believes the whole truth has never been told. The poll of 1,500 people, released Sunday by Time magazine and Cable News Network, was taken Dec. 17-22, just after the release of “JFK.” The 73 percent who believe there was a conspiracy were given a list of six possible players in the plot, and given a chance to say any or all might be involved. Half suspected the Central Intelligence Agency; 48 percent, the Mafia; 34 percent, the Cuban government; 19 percent, anti-Castro Cuban exiles; 18 percent, American military leaders; and 13 percent, the Dallas police. LOS ANGELES (AP) The daughter of “Candid Camera” creator Allen Funt is among the celebrity offspring who appear in the new syndicated version of the TV show helping catch Americans in the act of being themselves. Julia Funt, Jennifer Convy, daughter of the late Bert Convy, and Lewis Arquette, son of the late Cliff Arquette, are among the actors who play out roles in front of hidden cameras to catch people in awkward circumstances. And Rac Clark, son of producer Dick Clark, is the field producer-director who tells Miss Convy, Arquette and Miss Funt what to do. Dom DeLuise is host of the program. Allen Funt, host of the original “Candid Camera,” is an adviser to the series. • HOUSTON (AP) A judge has dismissed a charge against Boston Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens, who was found innocent last month of another charge stemming from an alleged barroom brawl with an off-duty police officer. The Class B misdemeanor charge of interfering with a public servant was dropped Friday by Harris County-Court-at-Law judge James Barkley, said George Tyson, a lawyer for Clemens. Prosecutors had filed the motion to dismiss the charge, which stemmed from the same incident, Tyson said. Police claimed Clemens tried to interfere with the arrest of his brother, Gary Clemens, on Jan. 19 at the Bayou Mama’s Swamp Bar. An off-duty officer working as a security guard claimed Roger Clemens jumped on the officer’s back and choked him as the guard tried to arrest Gary Clemens.
