Parke County suspect pulled from burning car by police officer
By CHARITY SINGLETON Banner-Graphic Intern A Parke County man is in Fountain County Jail after a Saturday afternoon police chase resulted in an accident in which a police officer pulled the suspect out of a flaming vehicle. According to reporting officer Charles Howard of the Clinton City Police Department, James Wallace, 24, Rosedale, was charged with resisting law enforcement driving under the influence of alcohol, and reckless driving after a chase that ended when his car collided with a utility pole. OFFICER HOWARD reported observing Wallace in a blue Chevy Chevette driving northbound on old State Road 63 in Vermillion County

ACCORDING TO reporting officer Herb Jones of Indiana State Police at Terre Haute, James Camp 11, 26, was apprehended in Clay County, northeast of Lewis, after the stolen vehicle he was driving collided with a cement drainage

last 15 years underwater as cover, he said. Hilgeman is quick to dispel a myth that allowing evergreens to decompose underwater is bad for the water. The only bad part is the chlorophyll from the leaves, he said, and that gets in the water anyway during each fall. Once the cover is built up, then the students will focus on plans for restocking the lake. With help from his friends at the DNR, Hilgeman said, his students will determine what type of fish to put in the lake as well as how many. THERE IS NOW an overpopulation of bluegill, he said. The largemouth bass population needs boosted, as well as the crappie. He is also looking at adding hybrid bluegill, he said, since they will not reproduce. They will get extremely large, however, and arc a good, mean species to fish for, he added. They will also take care of the other bluegill offspring. The students will also research a half dozen other species that may be added to the lake, Hilgeman said. THERE IS LITTLE expense to the project, he said. The club is

at approximately 4:50 p.m. Saturday. When Wallace saw Howard, he pulled into a gravel pit and then fled through a field back to old SR 63. Officer Howard pursued Wallace to the current SR 63 where Wallace allegedly committed several traffic violations. After a three-mile pursuit, Wallace’s car went into the ditch on the east side of SR 63 where it traveled 200 feet before hitting a utility pole. OFICER HOWARD said Wallace was knocked unconscious at that time and the car burst into flames. Officer Howard pulled Wallace from the vehicle. Wallace was taken to Vermillion County Hospital and released to the custody of the Fountain County Jail where he is currently housed.
structure. Terre Haute City Police began the chase shortly after 3:30 p.m. when they spotted a 1988 black Chevrolet Camaro possibly involved in a burglary, Jones said. INDIANA STATE Police and the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department gave assistance to the chase at the intersection of State Road 42 and State Road 46. According to the VCSD, the stolen car was registered to Russ Fisher, Riley.

hoping for donations of rope and concrete blocks. Many free fish will be available through the state, though the hybrid fish must be purchased. The students’ enthusiasm for this project shows that if young people are given a chance to do something, they will, Hilgeman said. “The interest in science has not declined,” he said. “These kids have more respect overall for the environment than kids in big cities like Indianapolis.” Hilgeman said he hopes the program grows and is supplemented so that within five to 10 years, today’s students can return to the Jaycee Park with and see the good cover and different species of fish in the lake. TOO OFTEN, the down-to-earth part of learning is left out of a student’s education, or just taken for granted. “Kids need the computer skills they get, but they also need to keep their feet on the ground and take care of what’s around them. In 10 years, these kids will be finishing up college and can come back later and know that they got the project started.”

Merchants Continued from Page 1 SIGN-UP SHEETS will be passed out for Merchants Association members to choose the committees they wish to work on this year. This past year marked the sale of All-America City Christmas ornaments as a fundraiser. The money raised was used to decorate the downtown for the holidays. “We all recognize the need to improve in this area but we need your support to be able to do more,” Mrs. Wilson said. “We need chairmen and committee members for all of our events this upcoming year.” GMA COMMITTEE assignments available include: Garage Sale. Civic League clean-up. Old Fashioned Days. Sidewalk Sales. Fair booth and parade. Halloween fingerpainting. Christmas parade. Ag Week. Easter promotion. Christmas ornaments. Back to school. Car show. Santa House project. Christmas decorating/Canopy of Lights. THERE ALSO WILL be a calendar of all meetings (plus the April luncheon) handed out Jan. 8. Any Greencastle merchant interested in becoming a member of the Merchants Association is invited to attend Wednesday’s 1992 kickoff meeting. Mrs. Wilson and her husband Lester, with whom she operates Greencastle Photo Supply, are the parents of four children Renee, 17, Shawna, 13, Alisha, 9, and Jeremy, 10. A 1973 Greencastle High School graduate, she is a member of the Professional Photographers of Indiana, Indianapolis Professional Photographers Guild, Greencastle Chamber of Commerce and Mam Street Greencastle. Legislature Continued from Page 1 A quiet and quick session would disappoint few legislators. They spent nearly six difficult months at the Statehouse last year during one long session and two special sessions needed to write a new budget and pass a redistricting plan. NO ONE’S EAGER to go a session that intense any time soon. “People are in the mood to make it quick,” Garton said. Stanley G. Jones, a former representative who is now Bayh’s legislative director, said the 1991 ordeal “was very draining and they don’t have any interest in going through that again. I think they want to take a bye this time.”
