Clovers learn late bombs can’t correct early errors

By T.R. HARLAN Banner-Graphic Sports Writer CLOVERDALE old story of a little too little and a little too late for the Cloverdale Clovers Friday night in high school basketball action. The Clay City Eels survived Cloverdale’s late three-point barrage to take home a 69-63 non-con-ference victory. Cloverdale slipped to 3-4 on the season. THE CLOVERS DUG themselves a hole early on turnovers, and were never able to claw their way out The Clovers committed nine turnovers in the first quarter and trailed 18-7. “I don’t think we really had anybody who came to play tonight,” Cloverdale coach Jeff Cherry said. Yet, the Clovers still could have won this game. Despite, committing 18 of their 21 turnovers during the first and third quarters, the Clovers found themselves trailing by five points after three quarters of play“WE’VE HAD A problem aU year flat out with the first and third quarter,” coach Cherry said. ‘‘We have the inept ability to dig ourselves a hole and then try to scratch and claw our way out of it. We’re not good enough to do that every night.” Clay City jumped out to an 11point lead with a 6-0 run over the first 2:13 of the fourth quarter. The final four points of the run were scored by David Steward, who led all scorers with 30 points. “This kid (Steward) is really

Cougars lose to Zionsville

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor ZIONSVILLE The North Putnam Cougars scratched and clawed their way back from an early deficit and into a fourth quarter lead, but couldn’t hang on to it, falling to the Zionsville Eagles 67-62 Friday night in a nonconference high school basketball game. The Cougars dropped to 4-3 on the year despite a 36-point, 12rebound performance by Daniel Johnson and a 16-point night from Eric Pipes. ZIONSVILLE IMPROVED its record to 4-3 with four players scoring in double figures, led by 6-foot-4 sophomore Mark Evans who came off the bench to score 17 points. North coach Jim Brothers was not down, but up about the Cougars* play, especially the second half. “We got behind early, but I realy felt like we played a decent ball game,” Brothers said. “All and all, we accomplished some things tonight. We proved to ourselves we could play against a zone.” Zionsville, with a starting lineup of 6-foot-8 sophomore Brian Flickinger, 6-5 senior Dan Pressner and 6-3 senior Chris Carpentier dominated the boards 27-12 in the first half. The Eagles took a 16-11 lead into the second game by scoring three baskets on offensive rebounds. THE REBOUNDING advantage, plus Evans’ 10 points in the second quarter, allowed the Eagles to maintain a 32-27 halftime lead despite seven turnovers and a 14-of-35 shooting (40 percent) in the first two quarters. “I started seeing the difference (in our play) in the second quarter,” Brothers said. “When you first come out and you see everybody is three or four inches taller than you it takes a while to find out what it’s going to take to get the job done,” Brothers said. The Cougars picked up the their intensity on the defensive end and on the boards in the second half. The Cougars outrebounded the Eagles 19-18 the second half and

Pacers start ’92 with 27-point win

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) Mike Dunleavy isn’t sure who he’s coaching anymore. “Is this the team that beat Chicago, San Antonio, Golden State and Houston. Or is it the team that lets people come into our house and walk all over us,” the Los Angeles coach asked Friday night after Indiana’s Pacers beat the Lakers 114-87. THE 27-POINT margin of defeat was the worst by the Lakers at the Forum since the Buffalo Braves humbled them 134-101 on Nov. 3, 1974. That margin still

SCORING OFF ITS full-court press, North outscored Zionsville 11-4 in the final 2:19 of the third quarter to erase an eight-point deficit. Johnson started the run with a pair of free throws, then stole the ball and netted a layup. Pipes bombed in one of his four threepointers. Johnson capped the run with a field goal and pair of free throws to cut Zionsville’s lead to 47-46 as the fourth quarter opened. “Through the first part of the year our back people (in our fullcourt press) were tentative about stepping into the passing lane. Tonight they stepped into the passing lane,” Brothers said. NORTH TOOK ITS first lead of the night with 7:12 to play. The covered up Johnson found Jerry Robertson open for a 10-foot shot that put the Cougars ahead 48-47. With the Cougars pressing after each basket, Pipes stole the ball and passed to Johnson for a 50-47 North lead. Zionsville outscored

stands as the club record for home games. Reggie Miller, who finished with 29 points, led the Pacers to a 59-43 halftime lead on 6-for-6 shooting. Behind his nine points, the Pacers extended their cushion to 87-64 by the end of the third period. The Lakers got no closer than 18 points after that for their sixth loss in seven games. CHUCK PERSON scored 19 points and Detlef Schrempf had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Pacers. Sam Perkins had 15 for the

Spearheaded by senior Brian McCammon and junior Ryan Thompson, the Clovers cut the Eel lead to just two points at 63-61 with 50 seconds to play. During the Clovers’ run McCammon scored 11 points, including three three-pointers and Thompson scored 8 points with two three-pointers. BUT THE EELS, who had struggled at the foul line through the first three quarters, settled down to hit 13-of-17 free throws in the fourth quarter to put the game away. “It blows my mind to understand why kids can’t come out and play with the same kind of intensity at the start of the game as the way they do in the fourth quarter,” a frustrated coach Cherry said. “They played awfully hard and I think coach Cherry is doing a great job with his ballclub,” Church said. DEFENSIVELY, THE Eels put the clamps on the Clovers’ shooting. Cloverdale hit only 22-of-63 shots from the floor, a mere 35 percent The Eels defense also held down Cloverdale’s leading scorer Ryan Ford. The 6-foot-2 junior opened the night averaging 24 points a game, but was held to 13 points. The Eels, however, could not keep Ford off the boards, as he pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds. In the junior varsity contest, the Eels held off another Cloverdale run to pull out a 49-48 victory. Cloverdale returns to action next Saturday night at home in a nonconference game with Eminence.

North 7-2 in less than a minute of neck-wrenching, full-court basketball to take a 54-52 lead. Johnson stole the ball at midcourt and scored a layup to tie the contest 54-54 and powered up a bucket between two defenders for a 56-54 Cougar advantage. BUT AFTER GETTING the lead by scoring from inside, the Cougars took and missed two perimeter shots and committed a turnover. Zionsville scored three quick buckets for a 60-56 lead it would never give up. “We just got impatient. We got away from what got us the lead,” coach Brothers said. The Cougars closed to within one, 61-60, with 41 seconds remaining, but it just wasn’t to be, and Zionsville’s Dayne Collings proved it with a blind three-point play. He never saw the basket. Collings stole the ball, was headed for a layup. Pipes raced from behind and got in position to stop Collings. As he stumbled to the floor, Collings apparently saw a teammate coming on the other side of the floor, and, with his back to the bucket, threw the ball up over his head. The ball kissed the glass, dropped through the hoop and Pipes caught in a no-win situation was whistled for a foul. Collings hit the free throw and Zionsville had a 64-60 lead with 35 seconds left. BROTHERS WAS pleased with Pipes’ play, especially his welltimed three-point buckets in the first half that opened the inside for Johnson. “I thought Eric Pipes played well tonight. This is two games in a row I thought Eric played well for us,” the coach noted. North played without starting forward Jeremy Butler. The senior had surgery unrelated to athletics earlier in the week. Zionsville’s junior varsity is 6-1 after defeating injury plagued North Putnam 56-44. Jeff Reed scored 13 points and Paul Schubert 12 for the Cougars. Ryan Gruenholz, the 6-foot-4 junior who led North in the Putnam County Tourney, did not play because of a sprained ankle.

Lakers. “We were outplayed in every facet of the game,” Dunleavy said. “Our defense has broken down in communication, both mentally and physically, in the last couple of games.” MILLER AND his teammates felt the best way to attack the Lakers was to take away their inside game and tum their missed shots from outside into rebounds and easy points at the other end. Since the Lakers are in the midst of a team shooting drought, the rest was easy.

The Clovers tried to make up for early errors with a late-game barrage of three-pointers in the 69-63 loss to the Eels. It almost worked as Cloverdale was within two points of the Eels with 50 seconds to play. Thompson posted 12 points in the game, with eight of them coming in the final period.
