JU.W. Original Garfield artwork celebrates B-G as one of comic’s original homes
Oakland City woman fills up her home with Garfield memorabilia
OAKLAND CITY, Ind. (AP) A homesick Diana Cox hung a poster in her college dormitory in 1982 that featured a famous orange cartoon cat and said: “It’s nice having someone waiting for you when you get home.” Now Cox has more things with Garfield on them than you can shake a cat’s tail at. Clocks, stuffed animals, mugs, ceramic and plastic statues, a gumball machine, postcards. The list goes on and on. “THE LAST TIME I did an inventory I had 103 stuffed ones, but that was three years ago,” she said. The stuffed Garfields are a story in themselves: There are baby Garfields, surfing Garfields, a Canadian Mounted Garfield, a sombrero-clad Mexican Garfield, one for each season, and on and on. An entire room of Cox’s home has been dedicated to holding the majority of the collection. Posters cover die room’s walls, shelves hold the stuffed Garfields, statuettes and books. Everywhere you turn there are candles, balloons, bookmarks, music boxes, calendars for every year since that fateful date in 1982. ON THE DESK IS a telephone
World’s heaviest man is eulogized as ‘gentle giant’
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) Hundreds of people, many taking pictures, gazed at Walter Hudson’s giant body one last time before the half-ton man once listed as the world’s heaviest human was buried on Long Island. The end came Thursday after a four-year journey that had taken an unknown Hudson, confined to his bed for most of a decade, and made him a hero to overweight people worldwide whose problems seemed minuscule compared to his. SANDY CRUZ, 38, Hudson’s fiancee, said his love for her made her feel blessed. “I loved the gentle giant,” she said. Hudson, 46, died Christmas Eve of heart failure. The medical examiner’s office said he weighed 1,025 pounds. His weight was estimated at 1,400 pounds soon after Sept. 14, 1987, when he came to the public’s

Both of her sisters graduated from DePauw, and her husband, a teacher, earned his Master’s degree at DePauw. John LaViolette was living in Greencastle and teaching in Putnam County when they met on the DPU campus in 1970. Jim Smith responding to a letter concerning the junk cars written by zoning board attorney Jack Woodruff. The Smiths’ letter states merely that they have a license to operate their used car business. Zoning board president Henson said he and another board member will visit the business and explain that the inoperable automobiles should not remain outdoors at the site. And, town building commissioner Lonnie Bryant told the zoning board that he has three building permits for which people have applied, but the applicants never picked up or paid for the permits.
molded in the shape of what else? a sleeping Garfield. When the receiver is picked up, the cat’s languid eyes open. So what is it about Garfield that created Cox’s near-obsession with the cat? “To me Garfield’s not a cat, he’s a person and he’s funny,” she said. “He just makes me laugh he’s fat and he’s cute.” She buys a lot of the items herself, but friends also contribute to the unofficial shrine to the famous fnt c<it “THAT’S WHAT I usually get for my birthday and Christmas anything with Garfield on it,” she said. Speaking of Christmas, the Cox tree had only Garfield ornaments 75 of them. Under the tree were 11 more stuffed versions, all dressed in variations of holiday finery. Plus, Cox has videotapes, cookie jars, bells, refrigerator magnets, sticker albums, and slippers. “THIS IS MY third pair,” Cox said, shuffling out of her bedroom in the slippers. “I’ve worn the other two out.” She had Garfield bed sheets in college but can’t find any for the larger bed she and her husband, Anthony, share now.
attention after rescue workers cut him out of the doorway where he had slipped and fallen in his Hempstead home. HUDSON HAD BEEN overweight since childhood, when at age 6 he weighed 125 pounds and was a compulsive eater. By age 7, he was scrounging bottles on the streets of Brooklyn to trade in for candy bars. He was 350 pounds by age 15, when he began staying at home. But the death of the man once listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the heaviest man attracted calls of sympathy and letters to the family from across the world. His funeral attracted 1,000 people to a Long Island church near his home. MANY OF THE speakers recalled Hudson’s compassion for others as he inspired thousands of overweight people by losing more than 600 pounds on a liquid diet with the

THE PERMITS WERE applied for in July, September and October. He said the work listed on the permits has already been completed without inspections. Bryant said that when someone applies for a building permit in the town clerk-treasurer’s office, plans for the construction must be left for him to review. He must either approve or deny the application within 48 hours and have it ready for the applicant to pick up and pay for. The zoning board directed Bryant to telephone the applicants and ask them to pick up the permits, pay for them and receive the required building inspections. ALSO DURING the meetings:
“They don’t make queen size sheets or we’d have them,” she said. And what does Anthony think of her wife’s fascination with Garfield? “Anthony didn’t adjust too well at first,” she said. “Now she’s pretty much got it all, so I don’t have to worry,” he said. AS IT TURNS OUT, Anthony’s birthday is June 19 the same as Garfield’s a coincidence that brings him a lot of ribbing. Meanwhile, there’s the bathroom. Shower curtains, towels and a digital scale that has eyes that open when it is stepped on. Framed in an honored spot in the “Garfield Room” is a personal autograph from cartoonist and Garfield creator Jim Davis, a Fairmount native who lives in Muncie. COX ISN’T SURE which item is the most unusual in her collection. But she says it probably is a tossup between the inflatable Garfield tent, which features the cat’s mouth as an entry, or a cartoon book published in German. But still it isn’t enough. “I wish they had wallpaper,” Cox said.
help of nutrition guru Dick Gregory. Prior to the funeral, hundreds of people lined up to view the open coffin, where Hudson rested in a purple robe surrounded by white satin. Afterward, the closed coffin was attached to the back of a hearse and pulled for an hour through the streets of Hempstead. The casket was pulled past City Hall and past the house whose front door he walked out of in 1988 for the first time in 18 years. He never ventured beyond the yard. Alexis Blass, Hudson’s business partner in his catalogue clothing business, said even though Hudson had gained back much of the weight he had lost, he still dreamed of getting down to 190 pounds. “This Christmas, the only presents Walter asked for were exercise equipment,” she said.
Commerce, Greencastle Chamber Orchestra and Main Street. “I HAVE ALWAYS been active in the community, wherever that community happened to be. Even as a Peace Corps member in Turkey, I conducted a separate tutoring program in my home for adults who were interested in the English language. I enjoy working with people and I have been a leader in many community projects. My experiences have brought me great insight into people and into the life of a community, and they have fostered a deeper sensitivity to people’s needs. If elected, I can make a positive contribution to the judicial system in Putnam County and I will be a responsible, caring judge,” she concluded.
New officers were selected for the plan commission. Kabzinski will serve as president. Larkin will serve as vice president. The position of secretary was tabled until the next meeting. New officers were also selected for the zoning board. Henson will continue to serve as president. Larkin was voted vice president. And Neibold will serve as secretary. The zoning board agreed to investigate an improper subdivision on Water Street The next meetings of Cloverdale’s plan commission and zoning board is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 at the Cloverdale Community Building.

The Chemistry Of Character
There is no precise formula. But there are certain elements usually found in significant measure in persons of character. One is belief; and not just belief in one's self. The men and women we most admire generally have strong convictions which influence their daily lives. Another is commitment . . . far beyond mere involvement. Those who stir our admiration devote their time and talents unselfishly to worthwhile causes. And there's usually a third element; but it's never boasted of or paraded about. That's sacrifice. People of character are always willing
