Drilling for the right oil
By JACKIE BAUMANN Extension Home Economist Now that the holidays and the “National Eating Season” are behind us, you might be thinking about taking a long hard look at what you are eating and consider making some changes. If so, you might be interested in attending a program being offered at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6 at the Putnam County Fairgrounds. A program entitled, “Drilling for the Right Oil” will be offered free of charge by Nancy Sinders, the Clay County Extension Home Economist. If you’re wondering exactly what is the role of fats and cholesterol in the body, or struggled with how to limit your calories coming from fat to no more than 30 percent as recommended by the American Heart Association, come learn the answers to these questions and more. (coronary) disease and cancer. Too much fat may have negative effects, yet we know that some fat is necessary for good health. “Drilling for the Right Oil” will help you tell the difference between butter, margarine and other dietary fats. It will also provide information on practical ways to cut down on fat and cholesterol in the diet. The lesson, which will last approximately one hour, is open to any Putnam County resident For more information about this topic, contact the Purdue/Putnam County Cooperative Extension Service Office, locate in the courthouse, at 653-8411.

Dear Abby
Widow ponders telling her pushy suitor to shove off
DEAR ABBY: I have been widowed for nine years and am blessed with many friends mostly women, although three very nice gentlemen are available to escort me when an escort is needed, with no strings attached. I met a gentleman about a year ago at a church social, and we have been dating. He is neat in appearance, polite and very generous. He is about my age, and a rather recent widower. My problem is that he is not content with a kiss at the door he has roaming hands, and makes me feel like I owe him something in repayment for the money he has spent on me. I was content with my life before I met him. At my age need this kind of hassle whenever he takes me home. I have been tempted
Heloise: For extra towel storage, wine racks work well
Q. I don’t have enough storage space in my bathroom for towels and can’t find anything suitable to use. Do you have any suggestions I might try? Gloria Templeton, New York, N.Y. A. Sure, and it’s one that is easy to do. Use a wine rack. You can pick one up in a department store or sometimes you can find one cheap at a garage sale. It can be painted to match the bathroom. Put it on top of the commode tank or hang it on the wall in an out-of-the way place. Roll the towels and store them in the spaces. They stay neat and look pretty. Heloise

DEAR NO NAME: The generous gentleman with roaming hands, who keeps reminding you that he is lonely and would be miserable without you in his life, is playing on your sympathy. Turn a deaf ear, my dear. Don’t give him any more than you want to and don’t worry about “hurting” him. I have a feeling he can take care of himself. DEAR ABBY: It is 4 a.m. and I can’t sleep, so 1 got up to write to you. I read in the newspaper that a 21-year-old junior at the University of Florida in Gainesville drank himself to death by rapidly downing 23 shots of liquor on a dare from friends. What a nightmare! Although he was a stranger to me, I ache for his family. Of course, it was a foolish thing
passed on, I inherited a small child’s dresser. I refinished it, and the only thing lacking was dresser pulls. A friend suggested I recycle children’s wooden alphabet blocks into dresser pulls. So 1 drilled holes in them and attached them to the dresser. They were simply perfect! They complemented the small dresser and everyone thinks that it looks great in my daughter’s room. Karen Redfield FIREPLACE ODOR Dear Heloise: I have a woodbuming stove insert in my fireplace and have soot odor from the inside of the stove. I

for the young man to have done, but I wonder if those “friends” who dared him were ever punished. Perhaps if you print this, it will prevent others from'being a party to such a tragic happening. Thank you for being there, Abby. I had to unload on someone. ARIZONA GRANDMOTHER DEAR GRANDMOTHER: That’s what I’m here for. I share your concern. Perhaps a reader will write and tell us as, Paul Harvey says, “the rest of the story.” To get Abby’s booklet “How to Write Letters for All Occasions,” send a long, business-size, self-addressed envelope, plus check or money order for $3.95 ($4.50 in Canada) to: Dear Abby, Letter Booklet, P.O. have a ventilating ceiling fan, and when I tum it on it draws the odor into the whole house. 1 got the idea of sprinkling a little strawberry scent (used in candle making) on pine cones and putting a couple in the stove. (Any scent can be used; I had strawberry on hand.) The scent is very concentrated, so don’t use much. It’s a bit expensive, but it really does the trick. It can be bought in any craft store. Now when 1 tum the fan on, I have a strawberry scent throughout the house instead of the soot odor. Mary Kietzka, New York, N.Y.
