Redskins’ Green ready for Falcons’ receivers
HERNDON, Va. (AP) Darrell Green isn’t getting older. He’s getting faster. As a rookie in 1983, Green was timed in 4.3 for the 40. This year, the Washington Redskins’ cornerback was timed in 4.1. And during the offseason, the former Texas A&I sprinter won the NFL’s “Fastest Man” competition. “IT’S TRUE, I am getting faster,” Green said as he prepared for Saturday’s NFC semifinal playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons. “I don’t say that in pride, because it’s true, basically.” By seemingly reversing the aging process, Green has mystified even those closest to him. “You’d think it would start to show up on Darrell but it doesn’t
Broncos shooting for ‘Moon’ DENVER (AP) Dennis Smith probably would play for free this week. Facing the Houston Oilers’ pass-oriented run-and-shoot offense is Smith’s idea of defensive back heaven. “This is the biggest challenge we’ll face,” the Denver Broncos’ strong safety said. “It’s the most exciting situation for a defensive back, because you like to get in a nickel situation and this game is a nickel every single play. So you’ve got to love it. “THAT’S WHAT YOU play for on first and second down: to force the other team into the nickel situation. Here we’ll play nickel every down, and that’s what you dream about” When the Oilers line up with four wide receivers in Saturday’s AFC semifinal playoff game at Mile High Stadium, the Broncos will counter with at least six defensive backs. Receivers Haywood Jeffires, Drew Hill, Ernest Givins and Curtis Duncan combined to catch 315 passes for 3,874 yards and 20 touchdowns this season. The 190 combined receptions for Jeffires and Hill represented the most by two teammates in NFL history. Not surprisingly, the Oilers, with Warren Moon as the triggerman, led the NFL in passing, averaging 289 yards per game. EXCEPT FOR THE 6-foot-2, 201-pound Jeffires, the Oilers’ receivers are small but extremely quick. “We play against fast guys every week, so that’s not the problem,” Smith said. “The problem is they have four of them. I’d have to say they have the best group of receivers, the best four receivers, of any team in the league. Hill seems to get younger and younger every year. We had problems stopping them the first game, so we know we’re going to have our hands full this time.” Houston routed Denver 42-14 in the sixth week of the season, gaining 327 yards through the air while capitalizing on turnovers and Denver’s special-teams breakdowns. SMITH INSISTED HE was relishing the challenge of stopping Jeffires, Hill and Co. “We want to play against the best, and in my opinion they’re the best team in the AFC,” he said. “What better way to be the best than to play against the best. If we can’t beat the best in our own conference, we don’t deserve to go as far as the Super Bowl anyway. So why not start now? The road to the Super Bowl shouldn’t be easy for anyone, and it’s not going to be easy for us.” Smith and free safety Steve Atwater are two of the hardest hitters in the NFL, but Smith is doubtful the Oilers’ tiny w ide-outs can be easily intimidated. “THEY’RE USED TO catching a lot of balls, and they’re used to getting hit hard,” he said. “And they seem to hold onto the ball. So we’re just going to play our game. “I’m just going to go out there and try to make some plays. I’ve never been the type to verbally taunt anybody, and I won’t on Saturday.” Florida DB going to NFL DALLAS (AP) All-America defensive back Terrell Buckley of Florida has announced that he’ll pass up his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Buckley led NCAA Division I with 12 interceptions this season and finished with 21 in his career.
seem to have affected him,” Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said. “I don’t know how you explain that.” GREEN, NAMED LAST month to his fifth Pro Bowl, is the anchor of Washington’s defensive secondary. He’s always had speed; his pass coverage skills have developed along the way. Green finished the regular season with five interceptions and 79 tackles; he had four of the pickoffs in the first six weeks of the seaso... Then the word got pretty quickly around the league: Green may be a year older, but resist the temptation to throw at him because he can still make the plays. An interception during overtime against Houston helped set up a game-winning field goal by Chip

Andre Rison, or any other receiver who gets hot. “He’s been a guy that for the last eight years we have kind of put on the toughest situation over there,” Gibbs said. “He’s covered the best people in this league, and ... we’ll go down swinging with Darrell covering guys.” But Green said his longevity has no mysterious origins, no Fountain of Youth or magical powers. Instead, he said, the answer is simple: Hard work. “I’ve been training harder, and I’ve been more aggressive in my desire,” Green said. “I thought, ‘lnstead of getting older, and slower, you know, why not try and get faster?’ It sounds strange, but that’s what I’ve done.”

WHILE THE POSITIVE attitude no doubt helped, but so has time in the weight room and his running workouts. Green also said that as his training has become stricter, he’s polished the raw speed that he’s always had. “Even when I was sprinting in college (Green was a regular NCAA sprint finalist during his days at Texas A&I), I didn’t really have a track coach,” Green said. “So all my supervised work now is paying off.” Green is one of the most popular Redskins, and it’s easy to understand why. On rare occasions when he has a bad day like in Washington’s first loss of the season, when the Cowboys’

Michael Irvin had nine catches for 130 yards against him he is always diplomatic. “TODAY WAS HIS day, and hopefully next time will be mine,” Green said after that contest, steadfastly refusing to make excuses for his performance. But those days are few and far between and he’s still amazing even those who have grown accustomed to watching him. “Now, I know he can make these plays,” free safety Brad Edwards said, “but sometimes you would see him make plays get beaten, then recover that an ordinary person wouldn’t be able to make. “It’s really something to see an athlete in this league who’s that much belter than the rest of us.”
