Ill’s team effort gives Big Ten only bowl win
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) There were two keys to Indiana’s 24-0 Copper Bowl shutout of Baylor the Hoosiers’ strong play on both sides of the ball, and Baylor’s ability to self-destruct. “It’s a team effort on all our part. We never thought in our wildest dreams we could shut out Baylor’s high-powered offense,” said Indiana linebacker Mark Hagen. “We’re not a team made up of a lot of blue-chippers, just a lot of guys that work really hard.” HAGEN HAD 11 tackles and one sack and was chosen the most valuable defensive player in the third annual bowl game, played on New Year’s Eve. “We play together as a team. We don’t have a lot of individuals out there,” offensive tackle Randy Schneider said. All-American tailback Vaughn Dunbar rushed for 106 yards and a 5-yard touchdown to finish his senior season with 1,805 yards, breaking by 12 yards Indiana’s school season rushing record set two years ago by Anthony Thompson. THE NCAA DOES not recognize bowl performances as part of season records. Dunbar said he thought about the school record before the game. “But when it started, the goal was to win. Getting the record is great. The line was really the key. A running back is only as good as his line. “I felt the record and a victory would come hand-in-hand.” And, Dunbar, a Fort Wayne, Ind., native who was named the game’s most valuable offensive player, added, “The defense really rose to the occasion.”
TCU to hire former Heisman winner
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) Auburn University assistant coach Pat Sullivan is expected to be named head coach at Texas Christian University today, according to published reports. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Dallas Morning News reported today that Sullivan, a Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn in 1971, will replace Jim Wacker,
Irish take road show into UK LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Notre Dame brings its road show to No. 17 Kentucky tonight. For Notre Dame (1-4), the stop in Rupp Arena will mark the third of nine straight road games and its first contest since losing 78-54 to Boston College on Dec. 11. “This is a team, that if they played a normal schedule, could be much better with four seniors starting in their lineup,” Pitino said in a news conference Wednesday. “I admire their courage.” Notre Dame won’t finish its travels until Jan. 21 at Marquette. The remainder of the schedule has the Irish playing 11 home dates and five away games. Pitino thinks the three-week layoff between games should help Notre Dame improve its performance under firstyear coach John McLeod. “It helps you when you’re losing and it hurts you when you’re winning and on an uptick,” he said. “Certainly that time off was needed, but I’m not sure how they’ll come out.” Notre Dame is averaging only 62.4 points a game and hitting only 45.1 percent of its shots, including 31.5 percent from 3-point range. “They haven’t shot the ball particularly well,” said Pitino. “But you have to give credit to the people they’ve played.” Besides the loss to Boston College, the Irish fell to Butler (67-60), Indiana (78-46) and Louisville (84-81).

Quarterback Trent Green’s 4-yard touchdown run ended the scoring. “They came out and got some big plays on us and that hurt us, but they didn’t get into the end zone and that’s what counts,” Miller said. Tuesday night gave him 2,627 for the season to break an Indiana school record of 2,544 yards set by Steve Bradley in 1984. Green had put Indiana on the board in the first quarter on a 1yard keeper and Scott Bonnell kicked a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter. And punter Jim DiGuilio averaged 49 yards on six kicks for the Hoosiers. But hand-in-hand with Indiana’s mistake-free play, Baylor hurt itself, early and frequently. ON THE BEARS’ game-open-ing possession, punter Kent Brentham fumbled a snap for an 11-yard loss, though Indiana could not capitalize. Late in the first quarter, Baylor moved from its 20 to the Indiana 21, from where the Bears tried a fake field goal. Kicker Jeff Ireland headed to the left sideline, wide open, but Brentham, the holder, overthrew him. Then there was the fumble into the end zone, on Joe’s handoff to fullback Robert Strait just before the third quarter ended, as well as the fourth-quarter interception. “That’s the way our season has been going,” said Joe. THE BEARS LOST their game with Texas Tech when a handoff from Joe popped into a defender’s arms at the Tech 1-yard-line and he ran the ball back 99 yards. “If we didn’t have any turnovers it could have been a close game, and I think it would have if we scored on that fake field goal,” Baylor coach Grant Teaff said. “We really weren’t able to get anything going. We moved the ball and then we fumbled on the goal line.”
firmed that Sullivan will leave the Auburn coaching staff. Sullivan could not be reached for comment on the report. He was reported to be in the Dallas-Fort Worth area Wednesday. TCU athletic director Frank Windegger also was not available for comment. A university official said the school would hold a news conference today at 10:30 a.m. CST.-
