Clovers even record 9-9
CLOVERDALE Coach Julie Hunter is having trouble remembering the Cloverdale volleyball team’s record. She thought they were 8-8 after a win earlier in the week. The Clovers are making it a little simpler for Hunter, just add victories three of them. Cloverdale rolled over Northview’s Knights 15-0, 1215, 15-6 Thursday for its third straight victory. The Clovers are now 9-9. The Clovers posted a shutout in game one. “We played real consistent, with real good passing and (made) no mistakes,” Hunter said. “We were just playing clean volleyball. “The second game we relaxed a little bit too much and we served about 70 percent. We were still playing well, (but) the concentration wasn’t what it was in the first game.” The Clovers recognized what
Gamer sets GHS record; Edgewood beats Cubs
Lori Gamer set a course record while leading the Greencastle High School girls cross country team to a 20-35 victory over Edgewood Thursday afternoon. But the GHS boys team hobbled to a 25-30 loss to Edgewood. “If David Stark hadn’t cramped up, we would have won,” Greencastle coach John Gamer said of his No. 1 runner. In the 4,000-meter girls race, Gamer broke her own course record for the second time this season. Gamer won the race in 16:24, breaking an unnoticed record of 16:27 she ran last week. Garner’s closest competition was her close friend, Joy Tesmcr, who ran a 17:15. Rounding out Greencastle’s scoring was Heather Fox in fourth place, Billi Jo Adams in sixth and Andi Smith in seventh. With Stark battling leg cramps just to finish, John Price, Dan Dobson, Chris Geckeler and Amos Batto tried to, and nearly did, pick up the slack for Greencastle. Price finished third in 18:34, Dobson was fourth,
North seventh grade 7-1
ROACHDALE The North Putnam seventh grade volleyball team raised its record to 7-1 Wednesday night with a 15-3, 15-5 victory over Tri-West. Natalie Berry led North Putnam
DPU spikers now 18-5
It took a long time to accomplish, but the DePauw University volleyball team raised its record to 18-5 with an important 15-9, 14-16, 13-15, 16-14, 15-10 victory over Illinois Wesleyan at Lilly Center on Thursday night. This year DePauw’s women are competing in NCAA Division 111, as the men’s programs have for years. That means the Tigers are competing for an NCAA Division 111 Tournament berth with a schedule still dominated by NAIA team. “Anytime we meet an NCAA team it’s very important we come out on top of it,” DePauw coach Paula French said. The long night might have been shorter if DePauw had held on to win the second game. Instead, after winning the first game 15-9 and taking a lead in
Cubs may fire Essian CHICAGO (AP) Jim Essian concedes that his chances of coming back to manage the Chicago Cubs next year are not good. The Chicago Tribune, the parent company of the Cubs, reported in today’s editions that the team plans to fire Essian on Monday after a meeting with general manager Jim Frey. FREY IS STRONGLY considering a return to the field, the Tribune reported, citing a team source it did not identify. “Your head just swirls a little bit when you look back at the season,” Essian said. “When the ballclub’s losing, somebody’s going to ‘be blamed for that. If they blame me for that hold me responsible for that that’s the nature of the job.” The Cubs are expected to offer Essian another spot in the organization, the Tribune reported. Scouting director Dick Balderson is said to be in line to get Frey’s job if Frey takes over again as manager. • ESSIAN WAS BROUGHT out of the Cubs’ minor league system to replace Don Zimmer as manager on May 22.
they needed to do in game three. “We just improved our concentration and got focused on what we needed to do,” Hunter said. Cloverdale served 81 percent (59-73) for the match after an 89 percent (16-18) first game. Dena Curtis was a perfect 14-14 and Yevette Burk was 15-17. Burk led the Clovers with 11 points, Curtis had nine, Michelle Lewis eight, Jessi Evans six, Jody Scott five and Kelly Smith four. The Clovers put together one of their better attacks. They served 92 percent (46-50) with 22 kills. Burk, who was 13-13 hitting, had six kills. “The setters were moving real well,” Hunter said of Burk’s hitting. “And she was just real aggressive. She hit everything that came close to her.” Northview on lhe JV contest 16-14, 15-7.
Gcckcicr was sixth and a mere one second out of fifth and Batto was seventh. Wes Duggins finished 10th to round out the scoring. “John Price ran a smart race,” Gamer noted. Greencastle will run in the Putnam County Meet at Cloverdale on Tuesday. The junior high meet starts at 4 p.m., followed by the boys JV and girls varsity races and lhe varsity boys race. with seven service points. Tri-West won the eighth grade match 10-15, 15-3, 15-11. Susanne Walker led North Putnam’s scoring with nine points.
the second game, the Tigers lost games two and three and then had to scramble to send the match into a fifth game. “It’s the same thing that has been after us all year. Once we get a team where we want them, we don’t finish them off. We allow litem to come back,” coach French said. Debbie Hackworthy led DePauw’s attack with 23 of the team’s 81 kills. The Owen Valley High School product attempted 71 kills and made only two hitting errors for the night. Many of Hackworthy’s kill were set up by Jennifer Malinich. The setter attempted 136 sets and had 47 assists for the night. DePauw’s next home match is Oct. 15 against Anderson University.
