GHS shuts out Eagles to win 42-0

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor Will the undefeated Greencastle Tiger Cubs be No. 1 in the Associated Press Class 2A high school football poll this week? There is every reason to think so. TOP-RANKED EASTSIDE was defeated 35-6 by Angola Friday night. Second-ranked Greencastle rolled up 446 yards, set one school record, tied another and posted its third straight shutout in a 42-0 victory over the South Putnam Eagles while celebrating homecoming. From the final minute of the first quarter, until the final second of the game, Greencastle dominated South offensively and defensively. DEFENSIVELY, THE TIGER Cubs limited the Eagles to just 53 yards of total offense and one first down. The Eagles crossed the 50yard line into Greencastle territory just one time. Mario Medina’s 22yard rushing topped South’s ground attack. Greencastle has not given up a point since the fourth quarter of the Danville game in week three. “We’re pretty proud (of that), but we have to keep our heads from getting big and keep going, keep going and make sure we have more quarters, more quarters and keep shutting them down,” linebacker John Amis said. Offensively, the Tiger Cubs rolled up 446 yards of total offense, chewing up 317 yards and the clock with a ball control rushing attack. THE TIGER CUBS’ ground attack became part of the defense in the second half. South ran only 10 offensive plays the second half and had the ball for only two minutes in the fourth quarter. “I think the final score shows how good Greencastle is,” South Putnam coach Mark Wildman said. Quarterback Brad Resner completed 7-of-10 passes for 129 yards and touchdown passes of 39 yards to Monye Stcadmon, 35 yards to Justin Homier and 18 yards to Wade Berry while becoming Greencastle’s all-time leading passer. IN THREE SEASONS as Greencastle’s quarterback, Resner has thrown for 2,660 yards and 26 touchdowns, surpassing the 13-year-old record of 2,609 yards and 23 touchdowns by Brad Collins through the 1976, 1977, 1978 seasons. Homier caught four of Resner’s passes for 62 yards, giving him a record-tying 57 career receptions for 928 yards. The 6-foot-4 junior shares the record with 1986 graduate Joe Franklin. But this game didn’t start as a record-setting night. It started like a tight county rivalry. The now 1-5 Eagles played with the undefeated Tiger Cubs through all but the last 43 seconds of the first quarter and made their only venture into Greencastle’s half of the field. “THE FIRST PART of the game we had a lot of defense going and they couldn’t move the ball and

we kept messing up ourselves,” Greencastle coach John Fallis said. Mark McKay intercepted a Resner pass and returned it to South’s 48-yard line. A face-masking penalty tacked on to the return put the Eagles on the Tiger Cubs’ 27yard line. But Greencastle’s defense held South to just seven yards in four plays and the Tiger Cubs took possession at their own 20-yard line. In one Heath Stone center snap Wade Berry was off to the zone and a 100-yard rushing night. THE JUNIOR WENT around the end and raced 80 yards for the touchdown. Travis Heavin kicked the PAT and Greencastle was ahead for good. That was the turning point, as far as coach Wildman was concerned. “We were playing with them. I thought our defense was doing a good job. We were exchanging punts and I thought we were picking up a little bit of field position,” Wildman said. “They had a face-mask penalty and that really helped our field position. But then we weren’t able to move it. And then, when they turned around and made the long run, that was pretty much the story of the game after that.” GREENCASTLE SCORED on its next three possessions, building a 28-0 halftime stage for the crowning of homecoming queen Amber Asher. Resner found Steadmon open on a quick slant-in that became a quick 39-yard touchdown. Then after Shane Thomas ran the trap for 15 yards, Resner threw a perfect spiral over Homlcr’s inside

“I DON’T KNOW exactly when it happened, but ever since our Owen Valley game we’ve been competing with everybody," coach Mike Parks said. “Starting in the second half at Dugger last week, our kids have been focused. I noticed it in pre-game tonight. Usually, I have to wait until the first play to find out if we are ready, not tonight.” North Central struck back, as Andy Fuson intercepted a Ford pass that gave the Thunderbirds the ball at the Clover 35-yard line. Six plays later Tim Boyll took it in from two yards out. Boyll also scored on the two-point conversion giving North Central an 8-7 lead. The Clovers wasted no time getting back on top. shoulder and he raced to the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown play. South’s defense played to make Resner give up the football. And he did, to Berry for 18 yards and his second touchdown of the night. Berry finished the night with 102 yards rushing. “I was glad to see Wade have a big night because he’s been the one who in previous games has got the hard yardage, but never has really got the long run,” Fallis said. IF SOUTH HAD hopes of rallying they ended quickly in the second half. Homier recovered an Eagle fumble and three plays later Thomas ran 21 yards for a touchdown. Heavin’s PAT kick gave Greencastle a 35-0 lead. Nearly all of the Greencastle’s long touchdowns were the product of some unselfish down-field blocking. “We’ve sure emphasized that enough since the Northview game,” coach Fallis said. That blocking turned a broken play into a 65-yard touchdown run. Resner rolled right looking to pass, but found no receiver open and South’s defense close on him. He tucked the ball away and started running across the field. It appeared an Eagle defender was going tackle him, but Amis came sprinting up the field and delivered a bone-jar-ring block that cleared the way for the touchdown. “HOMLER’S NO-BLOCK was a great one,” Fallis pointed out. “Amis came and hustled down field and got the block you saw. Homier was about 10 yards in front of that and he had enough judgment just looking to know it would have been

dale the ball at the Thunderbird 38yard line. FORD NEEDED ONLY four plays to find Jordan in the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion pass was broken up leaving the score: Cloverdale 13, North Central 8. That would be the closest North Central got. The Clovers took over control of the ball game, scoring four consecutive times during the second and third quarters. Cloverdale padded its lead when Ford hooked up with Brad Gerlach for a 25-yard scoring strike that put the Clovers on top 20-7, following Jordan’s second PAT kick of the night. AS THE FIRST half ended it was clear this would be Ford’s night. The junior completed 8-of-13 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns with two quarters of football left to be played. “Ryan’s getting better, our receivers are getting better, and our line is beat-up, but the kids in there are doing a good job,“ coach Parks said. The third quarter started just as the second ended, with Cloverdale’s defense forcing one of six North Central punts. The Clovers took over possession at their own 47-yard line. FORD IMMEDIATELY found Aragon Gould across the middle on a simple square-in pattern. Gould wouldn’t quit until he crossed the goal line for a 41-yard touchdown for Ford’s fourth touchdown pass of the night. Jordan’s PAT kick was good and the Clovers held a commanding 27-8 lead.

stupid to throw a block, because at that point it could have been a clip. “I was just real pleased with the way we reacted,” Fallis added. “Brad reacted and broke a tackle, then the rest of the team reacted and hustled instead of just standing there and watching.” GREENCASTLE IS not only 60 overall, but 3-0 in the WCC. The Tiger Cubs will play their final home game of the regular season next Friday night against conference rival Edgewood. South will play its final home game of the regular season next Friday night against the Owen Valley Patriots. Cloverdale wasn’t done just yet. Gerlach look a hand-off from Ford on a counter and broke free around the left end for a 23-yard touchdown run. Johnson leads NP in 46-7 victory

By GARY HAZLETT Banner-Graphic Sports Writer CLAYTON Daniel Johnson led the fourth-ranked North Putnam Cougars to a 46-7 victory over the Cascade Cadets in West Central Conference high school football action Friday night. The 6-foot-5, senior quarterback threw five touchdown passes and ran for two more while leading the Cougars to a 6-0 record. THE COUGARS, who were playing without leading ball carrier and inside linebacker Jason Schubert for the first time in three seasons, dominated a decimated Cadet football team. Cascade lost 15 players during the week due to academic and disciplinary problems. North rolled up 460 yards in total offense and limited the Cadets to just 129 yards, while playing their starters just three quarters. The Cougars scored on their first six possessions. “That’s a very good, an excellent football team,” Cascade coach Darrin Fisher said. THE COUGARS SCORED on their second play from scrimmage. Johnson hit Eric Pipes with a 21yard scoring strike. Pipes added the PAT kick and the Cougars led 7-0. Johnson accounted for all seven of North’s touchdowns in one way or another. He completed 16-of-20 passes for a season-high 267 yards and no interceptions, in addition to his five scoring tosses. The quarterback also rushed for one touchdown and returned a fumble for a score. He completed 11 of his first 12 pass attempts. “I THOUGHT DANIEL was very accurate n the first half. He threw for so many yards and all those touchdowns, with NO interceptions,“ North coach Herb King said. The next Cougar possession resulted in another Johnson to Pipes touchdown pass. This time for 35 yards. Pipes caught six passes for 118 yards. The senior danker did miss the PAT, though, and the Cougars led 13-0. NORTH SCORED ON the second play of the second quarter as they racked up 26 points in the period. Johnson found Pat Payton for a 16-yard score. The extra-point kick was no good, but North led 19-0. The Cougars put the game away on Cascade’s next possession. Paul Schubert intercepted a Cadet pass, but fumbled it and “Mr. Everything,” Johnson, picked up the loose ball and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown. Pipes added the PAT and North led 26-0. Cascade started to move the ball on its next possession, but Brian Spear recovered a Cadet fumble at the Cougar 34 yard-line. It took North just four plays to score. THREE JOHNSON completions were followed by a nineyard touchdown run by the quarterback. The Cougars attempt for the two-point conversion was incomplete, but North led 32-0. The Cougars weren’t quite done in the second quarter. North drove 51 yards in six plays, capped by a Johnson to Spear three-yard touchdown pass. Pipes kicked the PAT to close out the half with the Cougars leading 39-0. North put the game out of reach on its first possession of the second half. The Cougars drove 83 yards in nine plays to score. Paul Lindley, playing his first game in three weeks, took a Johnson pass in the flat and rambled 37 yards for the final Cougars score of the game. PIPES ADDED HIS fourth PAT

QB DANIEL JOHNSON Runs for 2 touchdowns kick of the game and the Cougars led 46-0. Pipes now has scored 95 points for North. The Cadets didn’t quit. Cascade used a 43-yard kickoff return by Chris Doran to set up a 34-yard drive that quarterback James Arthur capped with a one-yard plunge to avert the shutout. Doran kicked the PAT to set the final margin of 46-7. The Cougar second-team offense threatened twice, but failed to score in the final period. The Cadets forced North to turn the ball over on downs at the three yard-line on the first threat. NORTH TRIED something different on its next possession. The Cougars took over on the Cadet 23yard line. On the first play back-up quarterback David Schubert ran backwards and knelt down on the 35-yard line to set up a field goal attempt for Pipes. Pipes came into attempt a 52yard field goal with a strong wind at his back, but the kick was wide left. North had a little excitement left. David Schubert ran 42 yards, but was caught from behind at the sixyard line as time expired. A SCHUBERT STILL led the Cougars in rushing David, the younger brother of Jason. The freshman had 49 yards in the game. North’s defense dominated the line of scrimmage holding the Cadets to just three first downs in the first half. “I thought our defense dominated the first half, but let down a little in the third quarter. We’re going to have to have a better week of practice to beat Cloverdale next week,“ King said. The Cougars travel to Cloverdale next week in a Putnam County Bucket contest as well as a WCC game.
