Stephens, 52, pleaded guilty last month of conspiracy to commit murder. Authorities charged she hired an undercover officer acting as a hitman to kill Goyer, 23, of Clarksville, Tenn. In her sentencing Friday, she received the maximum term from Marion County Criminal Court Judge Gary L. Miller. “YOU ARE A MOTHER in name only. were played in court. On the tapes, Stephens promised SIO,OOO to DuBois after she collected on her son’s insurance policy. She also told Dußois that her son had a roommate. When Dußois asked what he should do, Stephens said, “You should waste them both.” But Stephens told a different story in court, claiming that her son had AIDS and she wanted to put him out of his misery. Goyer denied that he had AIDS and was tested at the prosecution’s request, Deputy Prosecutor Mark Stoner said. THE RESULTS OF the tests showed that Goyer was HIV negative, Stoner said. Lcßoy Stephens, the defendant’s husband, testified that she needed the money because of heavy gambling debts. Stephens’ sons, Robert and Billy Goyer, testified that she had attacked them on previous occasions with a knife and that she was violent. “She was a very dangerous woman who invented this story to try to make herself look better, and it apparently didn’t bother her that she continued to drag her family’s name down with her,” Stoner said. “Despite her age, she got and deserved the maximum.”

Dueling bios: New Madonna shockers vying for readers

NEW YORK (AP) thought the behind-the-scenes documentary “Truth or Dare” told all there was to know about pop star Madonna, think again here come the unauthorized biographies. Not one but two books came out this week, promising new scandalous details of “her tragic childhood, her greatest fears and her string of lost loves,” as one press release put it. TO LEARN HOW Madonna cruised the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan and picked up young Hispanic men for flings in the back seat of her limousine, consult “Madonna Unauthorized,” by Christopher Andersen. But those interested in the revelation that Madonna once ate out of garbage cans should buy “Madonna Revealed,” by Douglas Thompson. “She may be Our Lady of Perpetual Promotion but she does have her secrets,” said Ben Petrone, spokesman for Carol Publishing, which put out “Madonna Revealed.”

Jury finds baking soda warning should have been stronger

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) A man whose stomach exploded after he took Arm & Hammer baking soda for indigestion is not entitled to damages, but the product label should have warned of the danger, a jury has decided. Both sides claimed victory in the lawsuit. “THIS PUTS THE country on notice that they can get hurt or can die with this product,” said Adrian I. Karp, attorney for plaintiff William Graves. William Egan, president of Arm & Hammer Products, said the baking soda label was changed in 1983 to include a warning that stomach injury could occur if it is

Madonna’s publicist in New York at Warner Bros, declined to comment about the books. CAROL PUBLISHING originally scheduled its book to be available Oct. 25. When they realized rival Simon & Schuster was about to come out with “Madonna Unauthorized,” they moved up the publication to Thursday. Carol arranged for media coverage of the book’s Thursday arrival at a well-known Manhattan bookstore. Ten minutes later, while the TV crews were there, the Simon & Schuster truck pulled up with copies of the other book. “Carol did beat them by 10 minutes,” said Felice Rose, general manager of the bookstore, Shakespeare & Co. Carol is hoping its $12.95 price for its paperback version will be more appealing to Madonna fans than the Simon & Schuster hardcover at S2O. BUT SIMON & Schuster spokeswoman Sandy Bodner says they’re counting on their cover to lure fans.

taken as an antacid on an “overly full” stomach. The verdict applied to the old label, which had no such warning. Egan said current labeling is “sufficiently stronger.” After a five-week trial, the state Superior Court jury voted 5-1 Friday that baking soda does present a danger of stomach rupture and that Arm & Hammer’s warnings were inadequate. But the panel also voted 5-1 that an adequate warning would not have prevented Graves from taking the remedy. BECAUSE IT VOTED against Graves on that question, the jury never considered whether the baking soda actually caused

It’s an embossed picture of the material girl in fishnet stockings and a black satin bathing suit, Bodner said, adding, “I have never seen anything like it.” Some tidbits inside “Madonna Unauthorized”: Madonna’s “never-before disclosed abortions” and her “neargenius IQ” of 140. Reports on her bisexuality, her nude modeling and her work as a pom movie star. Her relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr. The book says Madonna believed she was destined to have a fling with him, just as Marilyn Monroe, whose appearance she has tried to imitate, allegedly had a fling with President Kennedy. “MADONNA Revealed” offers various revelations about Madonna’s ex-husband Sean Penn, including allegations that he took shots at helicopters hovering over their wedding; beat up a man who said good night to her at a club; and abused Madonna, including one night when he tied her up, beat her and sexually assaulted her.

Gravcs’ stomach to rupture. Graves, of Bethesda, Md., said he developed indigestion one night in 1979 after eating a bowl of homemade chili and drinking two martinis and a glass of wine. He said his stomach ruptured after he drank a glass of water mixed with a spoonful of baking soda. Graves, 64, said he needed seven operations to recover and almost died twice. He sued Church & Dwight Inc. of Princeton, makers of Arm & Hammer, in 1984, seeking unspecified damages and an order that the product not be sold as an antacid. Gregory said he became interested in making and directing movies by watching television. “When I saw this movie, I said ‘I can do that,” the boy said. He didn’t remember the movie’s title. Asked who he would most like to direct, he said: “Madonna ... you know why because she’s sexy!”
