NBA notes Lakers get Threatt to back up Magic INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) Magic Johnson finally has the backup he’s been seeking. The Los Angeles Lakers acquired guard Sedale Threatt from the Seattle Super Sonics on Wednesday in exchange for three second-round draft choices. To make room under the salary cap for Threatt, the team waived center Mychal Thompson and guard Larry Drew. THREATT, 30, IS an eight-year NBA veteran who had his best season last year, averaging 12.7 points and 3.4 assists. He started 57 games last season. “I think we got somebody our coaches wanted,” general manager Jerry West said. “I think his versatility was pretty exciting to us. “He can play both point guard and off-guard, and will help us with his defense, shooting and playmaking abilities.” WITH BOTH BYRON Scott and Terry Teagle exclusively shooting guards, the Lakers were seeking someone more experienced than second-year guard Tony Smith to spell Johnson. TTie Super Sonics will receive second-round picks in 1994,1995 and 1996. Seattle’s Ricky Pierce, 32, will take Threatt’s spot as starting shooting guard. Coach K.C. Jones said Dana Barros, who was unhappy with his minutes last season, will become Pierce’s backup. “One of the goals we had coming into camp was to take a deep backcourt and see if we could thin it out,” Sonics president Bob Whitsitt said. “That was the No. 1 chemistry problem we were faced with in terms of having too many players and not enough minutes.” THREATT WAS ORIGINALLY drafted in 1983 in the sixth round by the Philadelphia 76ers. He has played in 544 NBA games, averaging 8.6 points. Thompson, 36, is a 12-year NBA veteran who played on two NBA championship teams as a backup to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. After starting in 1989-90, he returned to a backup role last season, averaging 4.0 points and 3.3 rebounds in 70 games. Thompson has played in 935 games, averaging 13.7 points and 7.4 rebounds. Drew, 33, a 10-year veteran, was with the Lakers the last two years. He averaged 2.9 points and 2.4 assists in 48 games last season. Overall, Drew has averaged 11.4 points and 5.2. assists in 714 games. Knicks trade Cheeks NEW YORK (AP) Four-time All-Star guard Maurice Cheeks was traded by the New York Knicks to the Atlanta Hawks for center Tim McCormick in a deal that filled both NBA teams’ needs for quality reserves. Cheeks, a 13-year veteran and the NBA career steals leader, averaged 7.8 points and 5.7 assists in 76 games with New York last season. McCormick, joining his sixth team in eight years, averaged 4.5 points and 2.9 rebounds in 56 games with Atlanta last season. Rockets ink forward HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Rockets signed former University of Houston forward Carl Herrera to a 1-year contract, but Kenny Smith, Vernon Maxwell and David Woods remained unsigned just two days before the start of workouts. Herrera averaged 13.1 points and 7.3 rebounds for Real Madrid in the Spanish League last season. Pacers sign players INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Veterans Randy Wittman and Greg Dreiling and second-round draft pick Sean Green are among six players signed by the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers also on Wednesday signed free agents Greg Grant, Doug Roth and Clifford Martin, a forward. The signings give a roster of 16 players for the start of training camp at Purdue University on Thursday. “Basically, it got to the point where I wanted to get our guys in camp, and so we had to get them under contract,” said Pacer president Donnie Walsh. “We’d like to have Dale Davis in camp, but if we don’t we’ll keep working at it.” Davis, a 6-foot-10 forward from Clcmson, was Indiana’s top pick in the college draft. “These signings do not impact Dale Davis,” Walsh said.
