Greencastle, Cloverdale go into tourney with wins
Cloverdale and Greencastle both will enter the MooresvilleIHSAA Girls Softball Sectional on Saturday on a winning note. Both won their regular-season finales Thursday afternoon. Cloverdale got a nine-inning pitching performance from senior Nikki Smith and clutch hits from Cathy Bauer and Jennifer Burcham to defeat Southmont 12-11 in extra innings. Greencastle made the most of five hits to outscore Owen Valley 13-10. Saturday in Mooresville, at Sunny Side Parte, not at the high school, Cloverdale puts its 3-7 record on the line against Monrovia in the 9 a.m. first game. Greencastle will take a 4-9 record into its 11 a.m. contest with host Mooresville. The tournament championship is 3 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $2 per session. Cloverdale and Southmont’s Mounties were locked 11-11 after seven regulation innings. And going into the ninth inning it was still knocked and appeared headed for another half inning when Southmont got two quick outs. Then Burcham singled, moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a catcher’s throwing error. Bauer singled to bring home Buraham with the winning run. It was a big win for Cloverdale with the sectional on Satur-

Michael Johnson had four pars and five bogeys while lead the Cougars’ 10th win. “That’s pretty consistent,” coach Bill Bays said. Barker could easily have been North’s medalist. He had three

day. “Espeically in my ptiching area,” a happy coach Jeannette Sharp said. Smith pitched the entire nine innings for Cloverdale, allowed 10 hits, struck out seven, but walked only one Southmont batter. “That’s Nikki’s best pitching effort of the year,” Sharp praised. Ruth Steadmon led Cloverdale’s hitting with a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and Burcham finished 3-for-4 at bat. Greencastle picked the right time to get hot The Tiger Cubs exploded for seven runs in the third inning to win its third straight game. A two-run triple by Mandy Detro and run-scoring singles by Tiffany Harvey and Amy Williams powered Greencastle’s seven-run third inning. The Tiger Cubs scored three runs in the first inning to take the lead, Detro driving home a run with a double. A two-run double by winning pitcher Nikki Sutherlin put the Tiger Cubs ahead 5-4 in the second inning. Harvey pitched the first three innings for Greencastle, but Sutherlin came on in the fourth inning and picked up in the fifth. All county teams in regional!
Gibbs and CHS relay champions By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor TERRE HAUTE Led by sectional champions Jason Gibbs of Greencastle and Cloverdale’s 1600meter relay team of Jim Fislar, Jesse Wyatt, Jeremiah Lavoine and Jeff Matthews, Putnam County teams had an incredible day in the Terre Haute South-IHSAA. All four county teams even North Putnam advanced in at least one event Roger Busch and Kevin Mendenhall will be North Putnam’s first regional entries in nearly 10 years. LED BY THE one-two punch of Gibbs and Mike Scott in the long jump and high jump and the surprising performances of Nathan Lewis in the pole vault and Amis Bat to in the 800, Greencastle took third place in the final team standings. Terre Haute South won the meet with 74 points and Crawfordsville finished second with 59 points. But Greencastle coach Charlie Dobson broke into a big smile when the Tiger Cubs’ 52 points were announced. “Now I’m real happy,” Greencastle coach Charlie Dobson said as the team scores were read over PA. “Again, we did about the best we can do. I’m real happy with what we did.“ WITH BUSCH TAKING second place in the 1600 and the 3200 and Mendenhall finishing second in the discus, North Putnam finished seventh out of the 12 scoring teams. Bill Furby finished second in the 300-low hurdles and Travis Dorsett fourth in the 400 dash, as South Putnam tied with West Vigo for 10th place with 12 points. Cloverdale’s No. 1 seeded 1600meter relay team scored all 10 of the school’s points in the last event. LAVOINE AND TERRE Haute South’s Shawn Hanley were running side-by-side on the back stretch of the anchor lap, approaching the third turn. The guy who breathed first would lose. Hanley flinched. He took a quick look and Lavoine moved into a half-step lead he never surrended. “On paper we should have won,” Cloverdale coach Jim Glenn said. “We wanted that pretty bad. We were second in the conference by a stride. Maybe this will make up for that” Greencastle’s Gibbs put on a show while winning both the high jump and long jump. He easily cleared 6-feet-8 to win the high jump, but couldn’t get 6-sect-9. “He really had a nice jump at 68,” coach Dobson said. “It looked like 6-10 to me.” GIBBS MOVED INTO the Indianapolis North Central Regional long jump field without one of his better performances. He won the long jump at 20-feet-9, just three inches ahead of Scott, who finished second at 20-feet-6 l A And Gibbs also anchored Greencastle’s season’s best performance in the 400-relay. Doug Scamahom, Anjuan Hugh, Brad Resner and Gibbs finished fourth in 45 seconds to advance to the regional. Greencastle’s 1600-relay team of Isreal Trueblood, Wes Duggs, Brad Resner and Doug Scamahom moved into the regional with a third place finish of 3:34.16 behind Cloverdale and North Knox. Nathan Lewis and Amis Batto were surprise performers for Greencastle. LEWIS FINISHED SECOND in the pole vault on misses, not on height. He cleared 12-feet-9 3 /4 like champion Kenny Taylor of Clay City, but it took Lewis one extra at-
Al Unser not likely to find ride for Indy 500
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) pears more certain now that fourtime Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser will watch the May 26 race from a suite instead of racing on the 2 1 /z-mile oval. A deal that would have put Unser in the seat of a Lola-Chevrolet fell apart Thursday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. UNO-GRANATELLI Racing owners Bob Tezak and Vince Granatelli said that “discussions concerning the possibility of fielding a second car for ... Al Unser” were held, but that no agreement was reached. They released a statement

tempt. Batto advanced with a 2:06.23 fourth place in the 800 run. “Amis didn’t run his best time, but he got out (of the sectional),” coach Dobson said. Shortly after the sectional started, North Putnam coach Jeff Mendenhall was asking for directions to North Central High School in Indianapolis. “I’ve never been there, but I’m going to find out where it is,” the coach said after watching his son throw the discus 130-feet-9 for second place. “I’ve never been to the regional before. We’re going to have a couple more (going to the regional) before the night is over.” THE COACH WAS almost right. One more Cougar qualified for the regional. Busch ran a 4:34.49 to finished second by a mere two seconds to Clay City’s Terry Wade in the 1600 run, then he came from behind in the 3200 to finish second. “He’s resting,” coach Mendenhall joked as Busch dropped back to fourth place three laps into the 3200. And as the coach predicted,
saying, in part: “One major factor that was considered is that we feel confident that with our attention focused on the No. 1 car, with defending champion Arie Luyendyk, that we have a legitimate chance to win the 500. We don’t want to do anything to dilute that effort. “Another consideration is that there is not enough time to properly prepare a second car for this weekend’s qualifications. Plus, we do not have enough quality personnel to staff a second car. “AND PERHAPS THE most important consideration is the cost. It’s difficult enough these days to

Busch charged back on the final two laps, to finish with a 10:11.49 second place time. SOUTH PUTNAM COACH Wayne Schuetter felt good that a Furby got into the regional without running his best time in the 300low hurdles and that Dorsett gets another week to heel before competing again. Furby was leading the 300-low hurdles when he “lost his concentration for a second,” according to Schuetter, and hit the last hurdle. That allowed Crawfordsville’s Dave Henthron to Furby, 39.40 second to 39.52. Dorsett, running in lane four, didn’t see Crawfordsville’s Brian Johnson coming on the inside and was passed in the strides of the second heat of the 400. Crawfordsville’s Matt Jackson won in 50.40 second and Dorsett finished fourth in 51.9 seconds. find adequate sponsorship for one top-flight car, let alone a second entry. To be perfectly honest, we could use additional sponsorship on the Luyendyk car.” The deal was made possible by engine builder Ilmor Engineering, which builds and maintains the Chevrolet Indy V 8 power plants. Their lease agreements limit the number of cars each of their teams may run in each race, but the company agreed to allow a one-time exemption for this race in order to get Unser, a four-time Indy winner, into the show. “It had to be a 100 percent effort by the team (for me to run),” Unser said. “They couldn’t do it physi-
